| File | gsdll32.dll |
| Role | 32-bit Ghostscript native library |
| Belongs to | The third-party program that installed or bundled Ghostscript |
| Typical location | The application folder or Ghostscript’s versioned bin directory |

Ghostscript interprets and renders PDF and PostScript content. It may be installed directly, or it may be bundled privately inside a PDF printer, document converter, imaging utility, scanner application, or developer integration.

A typical standalone installation may place the file under a path similar to:
C:Program Files (x86)gsgs<version>bingsdll32.dll
The exact folder depends on the application and Ghostscript build. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit application normally uses gsdll64.dll instead.

Why Windows says “module not found” when the file exists
Windows error messages can be misleading. “The specified module could not be found” may mean that gsdll32.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing.
The most important dependency case is the x86 Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, particularly with applications using Ghostscript 9.56 or later. Other common causes include:
- The application’s bundled files are incomplete.
- Antivirus software quarantined the DLL.
- A 32-bit application is being given a 64-bit library, or the reverse.
- The program was moved without its supporting files.
- A Ghostscript search path or environment setting points to the wrong installation.
- An update left the application partially installed.
Start with the application that displays the error. That is usually the correct repair target.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the safest and most likely fix.
If the application has a repair option
- Close the affected program.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the PDF printer, converter, scanner utility, imaging program, or other application that fails.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again and repeat the action that triggered the error.
If the program works, its private Ghostscript files were probably incomplete or damaged.
If repair is unavailable
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website or use the original official launcher.
- Install the application using its normal default location.
- Restart Windows again if the installer requests it.
- Test the application before changing any system DLL folders.
For a game or launcher that bundles a document or image component:
- Open the game launcher.
- Open the game’s settings or properties.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Launch the game again.
Do not assume the newest standalone Ghostscript release is the correct replacement. Some applications require the version they bundle, including supporting files and configuration. Reinstalling the owning program restores that complete set.
Fix 2: Install the official x86 Visual C++ Redistributable
Use this fix when the application uses Ghostscript 9.56 or later, when the DLL is present but still fails to load, or when reinstalling the application did not help.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications, but those applications still need the x86 runtime. Installing only the x64 package does not satisfy a 32-bit program.
- Close the affected application.
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download the x86 package. Microsoft also provides the direct x86 Visual C++ Redistributable download.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Accept the license terms and select Install. If it is already installed, choose Repair when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected application and test it again.
Install the x64 package only when the launching application is 64-bit. If the program is 32-bit, the x86 package is the relevant one regardless of whether Windows itself is 32-bit or 64-bit.

This runtime fix is strongly supported for the documented Ghostscript dependency case, but it does not repair every gsdll32.dll problem. If the error remains, continue with the application and architecture checks below.
Fix 3: Confirm the application and DLL architecture
Do not replace gsdll32.dll with gsdll64.dll. The two libraries are not interchangeable.
To check the application’s architecture:
- Start the affected program, if it opens far enough to do so.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Check whether the process is listed as 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is shown with a suffix such as (32 bit).
You can also inspect the application’s installation folder:
C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications.C:Program Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.
These folder locations are clues, not proof. The launching process is what matters.
If the process is 32-bit, it needs:
gsdll32.dll- The x86 Visual C++ runtime
- The correct supporting Ghostscript files
If the process is 64-bit, it normally needs:
gsdll64.dll- The x64 runtime where required
- The matching 64-bit application package
Java, .NET, and other foreign-function integrations must also match the native process architecture. Adding gsdll32.dll as though it were a managed .NET assembly will not work.
Fix 4: Check the original application folder and search path
Ghostscript normally searches beside its executable, then uses its configured library path and standard Windows DLL search locations. A manually moved DLL can therefore be visible in File Explorer but invisible to the application, or it can be found without the supporting files it needs.
To check the file:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the application’s own Ghostscript folder or a versioned
binfolder. - If
gsdll32.dllis absent, use the application’s repair or reinstall process.
Do not copy only the DLL from another computer. Ghostscript may also require supporting libraries, fonts, configuration files, and a compatible runtime.
If you previously changed environment variables:
- Press Windows key, search for environment variables, and select Edit the system environment variables.
- Select Environment Variables.
- Review
PATHand anyGS_DLLsetting. - Remove an entry that points to a deleted or unrelated Ghostscript installation, or restore the value specified by the application vendor.
- Restart the application.
If you are unsure which entry is correct, reinstall the owning application instead of guessing. Multiple Ghostscript versions can coexist, and a program may require its bundled copy.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a bundled DLL after an update, a signature change, or a file modification.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
gsdll32.dll. - Confirm that the file belongs to the application’s official installation folder.
- Verify the application’s digital signature or obtain a clean installer from the vendor.
- Restore the file only when its provenance is clear.
- If verification fails, reinstall the application instead.
Do not temporarily disable antivirus protection to download a replacement DLL from an unknown source. A file with the right name can still be the wrong build, altered, or incompatible with the application.
For launchers, use Verify files after restoring or removing a quarantined item. That lets the launcher replace the complete, expected installation rather than restoring one file in isolation.
Fix 6: Update the application and relevant drivers
An application update may correct an outdated Ghostscript integration. Check the developer’s official update mechanism first:
- Open the application.
- Open Help, About, or Settings.
- Select Check for updates, if available.
- Install the update.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For printer, scanner, or imaging software, update the device driver from the hardware manufacturer:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the hardware.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated when manually checking several hardware vendors becomes guesswork; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns gsdll32.dll.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is a lower-probability step because gsdll32.dll is normally a third-party application file, not a protected Windows resource. Use it when several unrelated programs are failing or Windows itself shows signs of component corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command and allow it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft documents these Windows repair commands. DISM and SFC repair Windows components; they do not normally recreate a missing Ghostscript DLL. If only one application is affected, return to that application’s repair or reinstall process.
If repeatedly running these commands without knowing what changed is becoming the manual bottleneck, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues and show what needs attention; the free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is not required, and reinstalling the program that owns gsdll32.dll remains the definitive fix for an application-specific failure.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or modified files
- The wrong Ghostscript build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file missing its dependent runtime
- A version incompatible with the application
Use the owning application’s official installer, its official repair feature, or the official Ghostscript distribution from Artifex. Those sources provide the surrounding files and the intended installation structure.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
gsdll32.dll is not a Windows system component. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and still leave Ghostscript without its fonts, configuration, or dependencies.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Ghostscript loads gsdll32.dll through its application programming interface and configured native library paths; it is not normally a COM or ActiveX control.
Recommended Free Tools
Running:
regsvr32 gsdll32.dll
will not normally repair this error. It may produce a message that the entry point is missing, which is expected for a DLL that is not designed for self-registration.
If gsdll32.dll still will not load
Collect this information before contacting the application vendor:
- The exact program that launches the error.
- The complete error text.
- Whether the launching process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The full path of the application and any
gsdll32.dllcopy found. - The Ghostscript version installed or bundled by that program.
- Whether the x86 Visual C++ Redistributable installed or repaired successfully.
- Any antivirus quarantine event.
- Whether repair, reinstall, or launcher file verification changed the result.
A failure limited to one program points to that program’s bundled files, runtime, or search path. A failure across several applications may indicate a shared runtime, security-software, or Windows configuration issue.
FAQ
Is gsdll32.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party 32-bit Ghostscript library installed or bundled by an application.

No. A 32-bit process requires gsdll32.dll. A 64-bit process normally requires gsdll64.dll.
Why does the error mention a missing module when the file is visible?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency, such as the x86 Visual C++ runtime, or the process may be using the wrong architecture.
Will installing the x86 runtime always fix it?
No. It is the priority fix for the documented Ghostscript 9.56-or-later dependency case, but incomplete application files, quarantine, search paths, and architecture mismatches can cause the same message.
Should I register the DLL?
Normally no. gsdll32.dll is an application/runtime library, not a typical COM server.
Will SFC restore this file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows resources. Reinstall the application that supplied gsdll32.dll to restore the third-party file.
