There is no single gst-launch-1.0 command that sorts a folder and advances through its videos as a playlist. Build a small GStreamer application to sort the files, feed each one to playbin, and set the next file before the current one ends. Then connect playback to an encoder, muxer and YouTube ingest sink. The exact output graph depends on your files, installed GStreamer plugins and the protocol configured for your YouTube live event.
What the pipeline needs to do
Separate the job into two parts: playlist control and live delivery. GStreamer’s playbin handles playback from a URI, but it does not scan a directory, sort its contents or manage a folder playlist by itself. Your application supplies that logic.
For an RTMP-based event, the output side commonly decodes the source, encodes video and audio, muxes them into FLV, and sends the result through rtmpsink. This describes the components, not a tested universal pipeline command: source formats and plugin availability determine the actual graph.
Make the folder order deterministic
Choose an ordering rule
Decide how files should be ordered before you construct the playlist. You might sort filenames alphabetically, use zero-padded names such as 01-intro.mp4 and 02-gameplay.mp4, or maintain an explicit playlist file. Ordinary lexicographic sorting can put video10 before video2; use natural numeric sorting or an explicit list if that would be wrong.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build absolute file URIs
Have the application enumerate the chosen files, sort them, and convert each absolute path to a valid file:// URI. The playbin URI property requires an absolute URI and supports local files. Do not rely on filesystem enumeration order, which is not a playlist-order guarantee.
Advance to the next video
Set the next URI before the current file ends
Keep the ordered URIs and a current index in application state. GStreamer’s playback design documentation describes the about-to-finish signal: in its handler, assign the next URI so playback can hand off as the current item approaches its end. Whether the handoff is gapless depends on the media and pipeline; do not assume arbitrary files will transition without a gap.

At the final item, define the desired behavior explicitly: stop the broadcast, restart the playlist, or otherwise follow your program’s intended schedule. Also listen for bus messages. The playbin documentation describes error and end-of-stream notifications; report errors rather than silently advancing past a failed file.
Use an application for playlist logic
A shell pipeline by itself does not provide the folder scan, sorting, index tracking and next-URI assignment described above. GStreamer’s playback component documentation also identifies decodebin as an option when you need to build more playlist behavior into your own playback application. Choose the playback design that fits your controller rather than treating a launch command as a complete folder playlist.

Connect playback to YouTube
RTMP or RTMPS output
For an RTMP route, the conceptual chain is:
- Decode the selected file’s audio and video streams.
- Convert video or resample audio as needed for the output format you choose.
- Encode video to a format accepted by the event. GStreamer’s x264enc encodes raw video as H.264.
- Encode audio to a format accepted by the event’s ingest settings.
- Mux audio and video into FLV, then send the muxed stream to
rtmpsink. GStreamer’s RTMP sink documentation describes sending to a streaming server and includes an FLV-muxed example.
That is an architecture, not a ready-to-run string. Check the installed elements and inspect your actual files before deciding which decoders, converters, encoders, muxer and sink to use. If every file already has a compatible encoded stream, remuxing or copying streams may be possible, but compatibility across files with different codecs, sizes, frame rates, timestamps or audio layouts is not established here. An encode path with consistent output is usually the more predictable design, but it still needs validation with your files and build.
HLS output is a different protocol
Do not apply HLS segment rules to an RTMP pipeline. YouTube’s HLS ingest guide specifies MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range playlist. It also lists supported formats and closed-GOP requirements, and says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Use HLS only when that is the protocol configured for your event and your sender meets those requirements.

Use the event’s configured ingest details
Match the output to the protocol, stream URL and settings for the specific YouTube event. YouTube’s Live Streams API documentation describes ingest type and primary and backup stream URLs as stream configuration details. Treat the stream key as a secret. For RTMP, consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for accepted codecs, resolution, frame rate and bitrate; those values can change, so confirm them for the event rather than assuming a fixed profile.

Check plugins and source compatibility
Verify that your GStreamer installation has every element your graph needs. Availability varies by installation and version. Inspect representative files for video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, channel layout and sample rate, then test whether the chosen decoder and output path handle them.

Account for encoder buffering
The x264enc documentation warns that some settings, including defaults, can add latency because the encoder buffers frames. Tune against your latency, quality, CPU-load and stability needs. A low-latency setting is not automatically best if it compromises another requirement.
Validate before scheduling a broadcast
- Confirm the intended file order and test the playlist controller through a complete sequence, including its final-item behavior.
- Check that representative files decode and that each produces the audio and video streams your output graph expects.
- Verify that the selected GStreamer elements are installed and that the output matches the YouTube event’s ingest protocol and settings.
- Run a suitable private or otherwise appropriate test stream, then inspect stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. The Live Streams API includes health status used to diagnose stream problems.
Exact working commands cannot be specified without your operating system, GStreamer version, plugin set, file characteristics and selected ingest protocol. YouTube ingest settings and supported formats are volatile; recheck them for the event.
Common problems and fixes
- Videos play in an unexpected order: the application may be using filesystem enumeration order or plain string sorting. Apply the intended explicit or natural-numeric sort before constructing the URI list.
- A file will not open: check that its URI is absolute and valid, and inspect bus errors for missing decoders or unsupported media. Confirm the relevant plugins are installed.
- There is a gap between videos: verify that the next URI is assigned in
about-to-finishand test the transition with the actual files. Gapless handoff is not guaranteed for arbitrary formats and pipeline combinations. - The stream does not connect: confirm the event’s configured ingest protocol and URL match the sink path, and check the stream key without exposing it. RTMP/RTMPS and HLS have different output requirements.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: compare the actual output codecs and settings with the event’s current ingest guidance, and inspect the event’s health information. Do not substitute HLS segment requirements for RTMP settings.
- Latency is higher than expected: review encoder buffering and the selected ingest protocol. GStreamer notes that x264 settings can add latency, and YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP.
