If your YouTube live stream has video but no sound, trace the audio branch from its source through raw-audio conversion and encoding to the muxer. A working video branch does not prove that GStreamer is sending audio. Check where sound disappears before changing settings: the source, encoder output, muxer input, or YouTube ingestion.
Find where the audio disappears
First compare the sound at each boundary you can inspect: the source before GStreamer, a local recording or encoder preview, and YouTube’s preview or stream-health message. If the source is silent or is not routed into the pipeline, changing the muxer cannot create audio. YouTube likewise advises checking the routed audio and video sources and the encoder output. YouTube troubleshooting
- No audio at the source: Check the application, device, or capture routing that should provide the sound.
- Audio is present before GStreamer but absent in the encoder output: Inspect the audio branch, its negotiated caps, and the encoder.
- Encoder output has audio but the muxer or YouTube does not: Check the encoder-to-muxer link, outgoing stream settings, and YouTube’s ingestion message.
The exact cause cannot be identified without the pipeline, GStreamer version, relevant errors, and YouTube’s stream-health message.
Verify that the audio branch reaches the muxer
The pipeline needs a path from the intended audio source through any required conversion and an audio encoder, then into the muxer’s audio input. Video and audio are separate branches until they meet at the muxer. GStreamer’s flvmux documentation describes audio and video sink pads and demonstrates sending encoded audio and video into a common muxer.

This is a schematic, not a copy-and-paste pipeline: element names, pad syntax, caps, and output depend on the installed plugins, GStreamer version, source, and protocol. In a dynamic pipeline, verify that the relevant pads were discovered and linked at runtime. Also confirm that the muxer actually receives encoded audio buffers; merely creating an audio branch does not establish that it is producing data.
Check raw-audio caps and the encoded format
Confirm that the raw audio reaching the encoder matches what it accepts. GStreamer’s audio adapters guide explains that audioconvert changes raw-audio sample representations and channel layouts, while audioresample changes raw-audio sample rates. Insert these where negotiation requires them. They cannot fix an absent source, an inactive branch, or a missing link.

For YouTube Live over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs. Its recommended advanced settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo, or 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround sound. These are YouTube recommendations; check the current message in Live Control Room for the requirements applied to your stream. YouTube encoder settings
Verify the actual encoded output rather than assuming that the encoder element’s presence means it is emitting an acceptable stream. YouTube’s error guidance includes unsupported audio codec, incorrect sample rate, and bitrate outside the recommended value among the problems it can report. YouTube live streaming error messages

Check muxing, multiple streams, and queue behavior
Confirm that the encoder’s output is compatible with the muxer’s audio pad and that the connection is made in the running pipeline. If the pipeline has dynamic pads, check the link after pad discovery, not just the static pipeline description. For FLV output, GStreamer’s flvmux reference shows separate encoded audio and video streams entering the muxer.
YouTube says that an ingestion stream with no audio means the encoder is sending no audio, and advises providing one audio stream. It also warns that multiple audio streams can cause ingestion problems. Use the precise warning shown in Live Control Room to distinguish no audio from unsupported settings or an unexpected number of tracks. YouTube live streaming error messages

Queue behavior may affect startup or synchronization. GStreamer’s Basic tutorial 10 notes that x264enc can buffer several seconds of video, which may require increasing audio-queue capacity. It also documents tune=zerolatency as a live-use option with a quality trade-off. Treat queue sizing or latency tuning as a possible timing issue, not proof that the video encoder caused silence.
Use YouTube’s stream-health message to choose the next check
- “The ingestion stream contains no audio”: Verify that the encoder is sending one audio stream and that the audio branch reaches the muxer.
- Unsupported codec or incorrect audio settings: Check the outgoing codec, sample rate, and bitrate against the current Live Control Room message and YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Encoder output is already silent or wrong: Investigate the source routing, caps negotiation, and encoder errors.
- Encoder output sounds healthy but YouTube does not: Check muxer input and output, then investigate ingestion and outbound connectivity.
Before a real stream, test with representative audio and movement, inspect the encoder output, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring the stream. Encoder settings and testing · YouTube troubleshooting
