GStreamer vs. OBS for Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube Live

OBS is the simpler choice for looping a local video on YouTube Live; GStreamer offers pipeline control but requires custom loop and output configuration.

For looping a local prerecorded video on YouTube Live, OBS is usually the more direct choice: add a Media Source and turn on Loop. GStreamer is better suited to a custom, pipeline-driven workflow, but its official documentation does not provide a turnkey recipe for looping an arbitrary file to YouTube. Neither choice has been shown here to deliver better stream quality or reliability; test the exact setup you plan to use.

OBS vs. GStreamer at a glance

Decision OBS GStreamer
Loop one local video Media Source has a Loop option. Requires a configured pipeline or application; the official documentation reviewed does not give a complete file-loop-to-YouTube recipe.
Loop a playlist VLC Video supports playlists and has Loop Playlist enabled by default; VLC must be installed. Possible through selected elements or application logic, but behavior depends on the pipeline and installed plugins.
Workflow GUI-based scene and streaming workflow. Pipeline- and application-oriented; offers more control when you need a custom process.
Comparative quality or reliability evidence No head-to-head test established. No head-to-head test established.

OBS documents video support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources documentation. GStreamer’s rtmpsink reference documents sending FLV content to an RTMP server; it does not, by itself, describe file looping or a complete YouTube setup.

Loop a prerecorded video with OBS

  1. Create a scene: in OBS, add a scene, then use the Sources panel’s + button and choose Media Source.
  2. Select the video: choose the local file in the Media Source properties. Enable Loop so playback repeats. Check that the source is visible and audible in the OBS preview.
  3. Configure YouTube: in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its ingest URL and stream key. In OBS, configure the YouTube service or enter the server URL and key in the stream settings. Prefer the RTMPS destination when available.
  4. Set output to match YouTube’s guidance: choose a supported codec, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the resolution you intend to send. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  5. Test before relying on the loop: start a private or unlisted test if appropriate, inspect the YouTube preview and stream health, and watch a file boundary for gaps, frozen frames, or audio discontinuity.

Looping a playlist in OBS

For a sequence of clips, add VLC Video instead of Media Source, select the playlist, and retain or enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents that VLC must be installed for this source. Test transitions between files: a repeat control does not guarantee gap-free video or audio.

Build a YouTube output with GStreamer

GStreamer gives you building blocks rather than OBS’s single-source Loop checkbox. A typical design reads and decodes or processes the file, encodes compatible audio and video, muxes the result into FLV, then sends it through an RTMP sink. The official rtmpsink example establishes the FLV-to-RTMP output arrangement, not every source, encoder, loop, or timestamp detail needed for a working YouTube broadcast.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check the installed build: confirm that the required source, decoder, encoder, muxer, and sink plugins are installed. Do not assume every GStreamer package includes rtmpsink.
  2. Implement repeat playback: configure the chosen playback source or application to restart the file. GStreamer applications can also manage data through elements such as appsrc, but the application-development material is not a ready-made file-loop recipe. Validate timestamps and continuity at every restart.
  3. Configure the output chain: encode audio and video, mux them to FLV, and connect the muxed output to the RTMP sink. Set the encoder for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and select codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate using YouTube’s current recommendations.
  4. Supply the YouTube destination: retrieve the ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room, then configure the sink. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the GStreamer sink reference says rtmpsink uses librtmp and accepts protocols supported by that library. Verify that your exact build supports the chosen RTMPS endpoint; do not assume it does.
  5. Test the actual pipeline: check stream preview and health, playback repetition, timestamps, and audio/video continuity before leaving it running.

YouTube ingest settings to check

YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one value as universal.

For H.264, YouTube’s guidance lists 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are recommendations for those specific formats, not universal targets; consult the current table for your chosen format because guidance can change. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

Copy the stream key from Live Control Room and treat it like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.

Testing, bandwidth, and archive limits

  • Allow upload headroom: YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips. A connection that only just matches the encoder bitrate may not be enough for a stable broadcast.
  • Watch the live preview and health indicators: YouTube’s encoder onboarding guidance advises testing before going live and monitoring the stream.
  • Understand archiving: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archival outcome for longer broadcasts.
  • Test loop boundaries: neither the OBS loop documentation nor GStreamer’s output-building-block documentation guarantees seamless video or audio at a repeat point. The actual file, scene, pipeline, encoders, and timestamps matter.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS video stops at the end Loop is not enabled on the Media Source, or the wrong source type is being used. Open the source properties and enable Loop; for a playlist, use VLC Video and check Loop Playlist.
VLC Video is missing or unavailable VLC is not installed or OBS cannot find it. Install VLC, restart OBS, and verify the source appears.
YouTube does not receive the GStreamer stream The sink/plugin may be absent, the endpoint may not be supported by the installed librtmp build, or the URL/key may be wrong. Verify installed plugins and protocol support, then re-copy the Live Control Room destination and key.
Stream health reports dropped frames or instability Upload capacity, bitrate, or encoder settings may not fit the connection or YouTube’s ingest guidance. Check the selected bitrate and CBR settings, preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom, and review stream health during a test.
Black frame, pause, or audio gap at the loop point Playback restart behavior, timestamps, or media boundaries may create a discontinuity. Test repeated playback in the exact scene or pipeline, inspect the source file’s start and end, and validate timestamps and audio continuity.
Stream key no longer works The key may have been changed, revoked, or copied incorrectly. Get the current key from Live Control Room, update the encoder, and keep the key private.

Copyright and channel eligibility still apply

Having a file and being able to loop it does not give you the right to rebroadcast it. Use material you created or are licensed to stream, and check the terms for any music, game footage, or other third-party content. YouTube’s live-streaming rules and any channel-specific restrictions also apply; neither OBS nor GStreamer changes those rules. A technically healthy loop is not a guarantee of monetization or channel-policy approval.
