Start with this diagnostic checklist
gswdll.dll is a legacy Graphics Server file, and its absence usually means an older application was incompletely installed or damaged. Before changing Windows, identify the program requesting gswdll.dll, because restoring the matching application is safer than copying a random DLL.
Check these points:
- Which program shows the error? Note the executable name, shortcut, or hardware device connected to it.
- When does it appear? Does it happen when Windows starts, when opening a specific program, or when loading a graph or trend screen?
- What is the exact message? Common examples include:
The program can't start because gswdll.dll is missing from your computerGSW.EXE and GSWDLL.DLL Version MismatchNeed Graphics Server 2.00 or laterCan't load Custom Control DLL: ...GRAPH.VBX- Is the application 16-bit or 32-bit? Very old Visual Basic applications may be 16-bit. A 16-bit application does not run natively on 64-bit Windows.
- Was the file quarantined? Check Windows Security before reinstalling or restoring anything.
The file is not a normal Windows component. It is associated with Graphics Server, historically developed by Bits Per Second Ltd, and was used by older Visual Basic-era graphing applications. It commonly works with GSW.EXE and GRAPH.VBX.
What is gswdll.dll?
gswdll.dll is described as the Graphics Server DLL for Microsoft Windows. It is an application file, not a current Windows system DLL and not part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributables.
Older industrial, scientific, measurement, educational, and business programs could use Graphics Server to display graphs. Known historical software packages included Analog Devices AD7715 evaluation software and Siemens ACT110 trend-graph software. Their installation files included combinations of:

These files are a group. A replacement gswdll.dll from a different program or release may be incompatible with the installed GSW.EXE and GRAPH.VBX.
Do not assume that gswdll.dll and gswdll32.dll are interchangeable. The requesting application, file architecture, and complete runtime package must be checked together.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs it
This is the safest and most likely solution.
If the program is still installed
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option, open the program’s original installer and look for Repair, Modify, or Reinstall.
If repair does not work
- Close the affected program.
- Locate the original CD, vendor-supplied installer, archived installer from the software vendor, or installation media supplied with the hardware.
- Back up the application’s configuration and data if the program stores files in its installation directory.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the complete original installer.
- If possible, install the program in its original location.
- Start the program using Run as administrator the first time.
A complete reinstall should restore the matching Graphics Server files together. Do not replace only gswdll.dll while retaining a different GSW.EXE or GRAPH.VBX.
How to tell whether this worked
The original program should open without the missing-file message and should reach the screen that previously failed. If the message changes to a version mismatch, the program is finding Graphics Server files but they are from different releases. Reinstall the complete package again and remove duplicate legacy copies only after preserving a backup.
Fix 2: Restore matching GSW.EXE and GRAPH.VBX files
Microsoft’s archived documentation identifies gswdll.dll as the graphing library used by the Graph custom control. It also documents version mismatch errors involving GSW.EXE and GSWDLL.DLL, along with errors involving GRAPH.VBX.
The important rule is simple: these files must come from the same compatible application release.
Check the application directory
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the path beside Target.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for:
gswdll.dllGSW.EXEGRAPH.VBX- Right-click each file and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for available product or file information.
Do not treat matching filenames as proof that the files are compatible. Historical Graphics Server packages had different builds, and reported version information is not universal.

Old installers sometimes placed files in the application folder, the Windows directory, or the old Windows system directory. A copy elsewhere on the PATH could be loaded instead of the copy beside the application.

Do not delete files from Windows or WindowsSystem blindly. First:
- Record each path.
- Copy the files to a backup folder.
- Note which application installed them.
- Reinstall the parent application from one complete source.
- Test the program before removing any old copy.
On modern Windows, the application’s own directory is generally the clearest location for its private legacy files, but the installer should decide where the files belong.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
An old unsigned application file may be quarantined by security software. That is possible, but the detection history must be checked before restoring anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries related to the affected application or
gswdll.dll. - Check the original file path, detection name, and action taken.
- Confirm that the file came from a trusted, legitimate installer.
Restore the file only when the parent application and installation media are trusted. If the file came from an unknown download, do not restore it. Reinstall the complete application from verified vendor media and run a full scan.
If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file, the program may be obsolete or unsafe to run on the current system. Do not solve that by disabling antivirus protection permanently.
Fix 4: Check whether the application is compatible with Windows 11 or 10
A repaired DLL does not make a 16-bit program compatible with a 64-bit operating system.
Determine the application architecture
Right-click the application executable and select Properties. The Details tab may identify the product, but it may not state whether the program is 16-bit or 32-bit.
Other clues include:
- The program dates from the Windows 3.x or Windows 9x era.
- It uses
.VBXcustom controls such asGRAPH.VBX. - It depends on DOS utilities or old Windows system directories.
- Windows reports that the app cannot run on this PC.
- The program opens on 32-bit Windows but not on 64-bit Windows.
A 32-bit application may run on 64-bit Windows through the Windows compatibility layer, but a 32-bit application still needs compatible 32-bit supporting files. A modern native 64-bit version of gswdll.dll has not been verified. Very old 16-bit applications do not run natively on 64-bit Windows.
Try compatibility settings
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the Windows version closest to the application’s documented release.
- Select Run this program as an administrator if the application needs to write to a protected folder.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program.
If the application still fails, use a supported virtual machine with an older Windows release, if the software and licensing allow it. For hardware evaluation software, check whether the hardware vendor provides a newer replacement. Some old evaluation packages also depend on drivers that newer Windows versions no longer accept.

Fix 5: Check Windows Features for legacy dependencies
Do not enable random Windows features to repair gswdll.dll. The file is not restored by a normal Windows optional feature.
You can still check whether the old program needs a legacy Windows component:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the available features.
- If the application documentation specifically requires a listed legacy component, enable that component.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
On 64-bit Windows, enabling an optional feature does not make a 16-bit application executable. If the application needs 16-bit Windows components, a compatible older operating system or virtual machine may be required instead.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related hardware drivers
Some Graphics Server applications were supplied with measurement equipment, industrial controllers, or evaluation boards. If the program fails while connecting to hardware, the driver may be a separate problem from gswdll.dll.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Ports (COM & LPT), Universal Serial Bus controllers, Human Interface Devices, or the category named for the hardware.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied for your exact device and Windows version.
For a clean reinstall, select Uninstall device, choose the option to remove the driver only when you have a known-good replacement, restart Windows, and install the vendor’s driver package.
When hardware software depends on a legacy driver, the vendor’s compatibility statement matters more than a generic driver update. A newer driver cannot repair a missing Graphics Server file.

When the manual process means hunting through several driver packages and guessing which one matches the device, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the parent Graphics Server application remains the definitive fix for gswdll.dll.
Fix 7: Run DISM and SFC only for possible Windows corruption
gswdll.dll is not established as a protected Windows system file, so DISM and SFC normally will not restore it. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged and other system components are also failing.
First install pending updates and restart:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then run DISM:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
After DISM completes, run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Restart again and test the affected application.
Microsoft documents DISM and SFC for protected Windows components, not arbitrary third-party application DLLs. Repeating these commands will not create a missing Graphics Server installation.
If manually comparing Windows components and repeating repairs is taking longer than expected, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows detected problems, while repairs are performed by the full version. For this file, reinstalling the application that supplied it remains the definitive fix.
Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for making every missing DLL work.

- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel

Graphics Server’s documented problems concern missing files, loading, and mismatched versions. They do not establish that gswdll.dll should be registered as a COM component.
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 gswdll.dll
If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that does not prove the DLL is corrupt. It may simply mean the file was never designed for registration.
Only use regsvr32 when the application’s official documentation explicitly requires it and identifies the correct architecture. A 32-bit DLL may require the 32-bit registration utility, while a 64-bit DLL requires the 64-bit utility. Neither command repairs a missing or mismatched Graphics Server file.

Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading gswdll.dll from an unverified DLL repository can provide:
- The wrong historical build
- The wrong architecture
- A file in the wrong language
- A file that does not match
GSW.EXE - Malware or a modified binary
- A file that still leaves
GRAPH.VBXor other dependencies missing
Do not copy an isolated DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 as a first step. Historical installers used old Windows system directories, but that does not make modern System32 the correct destination.
Use the original application installer, vendor-supplied installation media, or a verified archive provided by the application or hardware vendor. Restore the complete file set, not just the filename shown in the error.
If the error appears at startup
If no known program is open when the message appears, an old startup entry or scheduled task may be launching the removed application.

Frequently asked questions
Is gswdll.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a legacy Graphics Server application DLL associated with Bits Per Second Ltd. It is not a normal current Windows component.
Should I copy gswdll.dll into System32?
No. The correct location depends on the parent application and its installer. Copying an isolated file into System32 can create an architecture or version mismatch.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Is gswdll.dll malware?
Not automatically. It is a real legacy application file, but an unknown copy from an untrusted source should not be trusted merely because its filename is correct. Check the parent application, file path, installer, and Windows Security history.
Is gswdll32.dll the same file?
Not necessarily. Treat it as a related filename, not an interchangeable replacement. Check the requesting program and the complete application package.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no verified connection between those modern redistributables and Graphics Server. Reinstall the parent application first.
Can SFC restore gswdll.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not usually restore a third-party Graphics Server DLL.
Why do I see a GSW.EXE version mismatch?
The application is loading incompatible Graphics Server files. Restore GSW.EXE, gswdll.dll, and GRAPH.VBX from one matching installer.
What if every fix fails?
The program may be 16-bit, dependent on obsolete drivers, or incompatible with Windows 11 and Windows 10. Identify the requesting application, contact its vendor, or run it in a compatible virtual machine rather than mixing standalone DLL files.
