Grand Theft Auto III had an early multiplayer prototype, according to former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij. It was a basic deathmatch in which players could fight, pull one another from cars and respawn around the city. Rockstar canceled it before release; the available account describes an unfinished experiment, not the GTA Online service players know today.
What was the GTA III multiplayer prototype?
Vermeij described prototyping a simple deathmatch for GTA III. As reported by GameSpot, players could kill one another, drag one another from cars and respawn around the city. The concept had working basic gameplay, but it was not a finished online mode.

Why did Rockstar cancel it?
Vermeij said the team had too much left to do and ran out of development time. The unfinished work included lobbies and scripts that could operate over a network. He summed up the decision in GamesRadar’s report: “The basic gameplay was working but there was too much to be done and we canceled it.”
GTA III was first released on October 22, 2001, according to GameSpot. The retrospective account makes the prototype a notable glimpse of an idea the team explored, but does not establish that Rockstar had completed the network systems or prepared a multiplayer release.

How did multiplayer efforts develop after GTA III?
| Game | What Vermeij said Rockstar attempted or released |
|---|---|
| GTA III | A simple deathmatch prototype; canceled before release because too much work remained and time ran out. |
| GTA: Vice City | Rockstar tried multiplayer again, but did not finish it. |
| GTA: San Andreas | The team did not pursue online multiplayer and instead settled for co-op. |
| GTA IV | Rockstar assigned enough coders and level designers to make multiplayer happen; it became a released multiplayer entry. |
These stages come from Vermeij’s retrospective comments as recounted by GamesRadar and GameSpot. They show that the idea was revisited, but do not mean that each game had the same mode or that GTA III’s prototype carried forward unchanged.

Not in the sense of the released GTA Online service being built for GTA III. The evidence supports a basic multiplayer prototype and an early interest in online play. It does not show that the prototype was a completed service, a feature of the retail game or an identical predecessor to GTA Online. The specific details are attributed to Vermeij in retrospective games-media reports, rather than to a published Rockstar production document.
