Rockstar had confirmed a network intrusion in 2022; that confirmation does not verify the later leak claim.
What was reported in December 2023?
BleepingComputer reported on December 25 that links to files described as GTA 5 source code had been shared the previous day through Discord, a dark web website and a Telegram channel. The outlet said a channel owner using the name “Phil” posted the links alongside a screenshot of a folder said to contain the code. These details describe what the outlet reported; they do not independently establish where the files came from or whether they were complete.

BleepingComputer said the files appeared to be legitimate GTA 5 source code, but added: “While BleepingComputer reviewed the leak, which appears to be legitimate GTA 5 source code, we could not independently verify its authenticity.” That is the publication’s assessment, not a statement from Rockstar. The outlet also said it contacted Rockstar and received no response. SiliconANGLE’s account likewise said it could not authenticate the reports and noted the limited evidence beyond third-hand accounts. BleepingComputer; SiliconANGLE.
Was the reported leak connected to the 2022 Rockstar hack?
Rockstar confirmed a network intrusion in September 2022. Its statement, reproduced by Axios, said an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. Rockstar said at the time: “At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.” That statement described the company’s expectations after the 2022 intrusion; it did not confirm that files reported online in December 2023 were genuine. BleepingComputer reported that the 2022 attackers claimed to have stolen GTA V and GTA VI source code and assets, including a GTA VI testing build, and that some content was leaked at the time. Insider Gaming reported in September 2022 that sources considered it highly likely that GTA V source code, or significant parts of it, had been compromised, while noting that Rockstar or Take-Two would be able to verify the files. Those were reported claims and assessments, not an official confirmation of the December 2023 files. BleepingComputer; Insider Gaming.
What was the alleged leaker’s motive?
BleepingComputer relayed a claim from vx-underground that the person behind the posts said the release was intended to combat scams in the GTA V modding scene. That is an attributed explanation of the alleged leaker’s motive, not an independently established reason for sharing the files.

Did the report show that GTA 6 development was affected?
No. The December 2023 accounts cited here do not establish that the reported files were authentic or that their circulation disrupted GTA 6 development. Rockstar’s statement that it did not anticipate long-term effects referred to the 2022 intrusion, so it should not be treated as an assessment of the later report.
