Grand Theft Auto IV is the better choice for weighty, demanding driving and physics-led immersion. Grand Theft Auto V is better if you want tight, forgiving handling, a faster learning curve, and flexible first-person or third-person perspectives. There is no single winner: IV makes every mistake feel consequential, while V makes driving easier to enjoy immediately.

The short verdict

Choose GTA IV when your priority is the sensation of moving a heavy machine through a reactive city. Its cars lean into corners, transfer weight under braking, push wide with understeer, and deform more dramatically in crashes. You need to plan braking, settle the suspension, and respect each car’s limits. That extra work is the point.

Choose GTA V when you want predictable controls and quick access to high-speed chases, missions, and free-roaming activities. Its cars are more forgiving and easier to master. The handling is streamlined and arcade-like compared with IV, but that accessibility means fewer failed turns and less time spent learning a vehicle before you can drive it confidently.

Immersion also divides along two different lines. IV creates a cohesive, grimy, oppressive Liberty City in which traffic, collisions, and the physical reactions of the car reinforce the mood. V offers a brighter, broader Los Santos and lets you choose the viewpoint that suits the activity, including a dedicated behind-the-wheel perspective. Decide whether immersion means physical consequence and atmosphere or freedom, variety, and control over the camera.

Driving feel: heavy versus forgiving

How GTA IV makes a car feel substantial

GTA IV’s driving model is built around momentum. A large sedan does not pivot instantly when you turn the wheel; its body rolls and its weight takes time to move. Traxion’s Ross McGregor describes the result as “boat-like levels of body roll” in large cars. Enter a corner too quickly and the front tires wash wide in understeer. Brake while turning and the shifting load can upset the car rather than neatly slowing it.

This behavior is not identical across the vehicle roster. Traxion highlights the contrast between the rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive Comet and the front-engined, front-wheel-drive Blista. Their different layouts change how they respond to throttle, steering, and braking. The lesson is practical: learning one car does not automatically teach you every other car in IV.

The RAGE engine and NaturalMotion’s Euphoria plugin helped create the reactive physical feel noted by Traxion. Characters, vehicles, and collisions appear to respond as connected physical events rather than as isolated animations. That connection is why a curb strike, a sudden lane change, or a bad landing can turn into a sequence of consequences instead of a harmless visual effect.

Why GTA V is easier to control

GTA V’s cars are more forgiving and predictable. TechRadar’s Jake Green characterizes the controls as “tight, predictable, and easy to master,” while describing the overall approach as streamlined and arcadey. Traxion likewise finds the physics and damage models less detailed than IV’s.

In practice, V lets you recover from a missed line more often. Steering inputs produce a clearer, quicker response, and the car is less likely to punish a small mistake with a long slide or a dramatic loss of control. That makes it a stronger fit for players who want to concentrate on mission objectives, exploration, or multiplayer activity rather than spend time adapting to suspension behavior.

Forgiving does not mean featureless. V still gives vehicles distinct acceleration, braking, and traction characteristics, but the range of outcomes is narrower and easier to predict. You can build confidence quickly because the same input usually produces a similar result.

Physics and crash damage

Area GTA IV GTA V
Body movement Pronounced roll and visible weight transfer, especially in large sedans More controlled and less demanding during direction changes
Cornering Understeer is prominent; entering too fast can push the car wide Tighter, more predictable turn-in that is easier to correct
Braking approach Best results come from braking in a straight line and loading the suspension before the corner More forgiving timing allows quicker, less exacting corner entries
Drivetrain differences Layout differences are conspicuous; Traxion contrasts the rear-engined, rear-drive Comet with the front-engined, front-drive Blista Vehicle differences remain, but the overall behavior is less detailed than IV’s
Collision response More exaggerated deformation and a stronger sense of physical consequence Damage and deformation are simplified for accessibility

The table describes tendencies rather than a promise that every vehicle behaves identically. Player skill, controller settings, patches, mods, and the specific platform version can alter the feel. The comparison is about each game’s design direction: IV emphasizes simulation-like weight, while V prioritizes consistency and approachability.

How to drive effectively in GTA IV

IV rewards a deliberate rhythm. Treat the following as a driving method rather than a collection of shortcuts.

  1. Brake before turning. Apply most of your braking while the car is travelling straight. Entering a corner while still on the brakes shifts load forward and makes understeer or instability more likely.
  2. Load the suspension. Give the car a moment to settle after braking before adding a large steering input. A settled car turns more consistently than one that is still pitching forward.
  3. Use a slower entry speed. IV’s heavy vehicles take time to rotate. Sacrificing a little speed before the corner is usually faster than entering hot and running wide into traffic or a barrier.
  4. Expect the body to keep moving. Releasing the accelerator or changing direction does not instantly stop the car’s momentum. Leave room for the weight to transfer.
  5. Learn the drivetrain. A rear-drive, rear-engined sports car and a front-drive hatchback ask for different throttle and steering habits. Test a vehicle in open streets before relying on it during an escape.
  6. Read traffic early. Because evasive maneuvers are less immediate, identify gaps before you reach them. A last-second swerve is a high-risk move in IV.

This approach explains why some players call IV “more realistic.” It is not a complete real-world driving simulator; its physics are stylized. The realism comes from the consistency of the weight, roll, braking, and collision consequences.

How to drive effectively in GTA V

V asks for less preparation, so your technique can focus on speed and route choice.

  1. Use the forgiving turn-in. You can approach corners more aggressively than in IV, then make small steering corrections without immediately losing the car.
  2. Keep inputs smooth at high speed. Predictable handling is most useful when you avoid abrupt controller movements that create unnecessary corrections.
  3. Choose the camera that matches the task. Third-person gives a wider view for traffic and pursuit awareness; first-person supplies a cockpit-like perspective when you want to concentrate on the road.
  4. Exploit consistency during missions. Once you understand how a vehicle responds, you can repeat the same braking and steering points with less adjustment than IV requires.
  5. Switch perspective when visibility matters. A camera change can be more useful than changing cars when a route, chase, or tight maneuver is difficult to read.

V’s accessibility is especially valuable for players who alternate between driving and other activities. You spend less time relearning the car after a failed attempt and more time progressing through the game.

Which game has the more immersive world?

GTA IV: immersion through atmosphere and consequence

Liberty City is the stronger choice if immersion means a distinctive place with a consistent emotional tone. TechRadar describes IV’s city as more memorable and oppressive, while contrasting it with V’s brighter, less distinctive Los Santos. The heavy handling supports that identity: narrow streets, sudden traffic, and punishing impacts make the city feel like an environment you must negotiate rather than a neutral backdrop.

Grand Theft Auto V - Xbox 360 (Renewed)
  • The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
  • Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
  • Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.

Physical reactions reinforce the mood. A vehicle that rolls, understeers, and deforms in a collision makes every shortcut or reckless escape carry a cost. The result is a tighter relationship between driving and narrative atmosphere. You are not merely travelling between missions; you are coping with a city that resists careless movement.

GTA V: immersion through choice and breadth

V’s Los Santos is brighter and broader, and its handling lets more players participate without a long adjustment period. Its immersion comes from range: you can move quickly between driving, exploration, missions, and other activities without the car becoming a barrier to entry.

Perspective flexibility is a major part of that design. Rockstar’s official GTAV perspective guide explains that you can select first-person for driving while keeping third-person for running and gunning. That separation lets you use a behind-the-wheel view on the road and a wider third-person view when controlling a character on foot. It is a practical option, not just a visual novelty.

Neither definition of immersion is automatically superior. IV makes the city feel more oppressive and physically consequential; V makes the world easier to inhabit on your own terms.

Learning curve and everyday play

Player priority Better fit Reason
Immediate competence GTA V Tight, predictable controls are easy to master
Weight transfer and demanding corners GTA IV Braking, suspension loading, and understeer matter more
Recovering from mistakes GTA V More forgiving behavior reduces the cost of a missed line
Learning individual vehicle layouts GTA IV Drivetrain differences produce more noticeable changes in behavior
Camera flexibility GTA V Official support for separate first-person driving and third-person on-foot perspectives
Oppressive, cohesive city mood GTA IV Liberty City’s atmosphere and physical consequences reinforce each other
Bright, broad sandbox access GTA V Accessible handling keeps more activities available without a long driving tutorial

Consider how often you drive under pressure. If a failed pursuit because of a heavy sedan’s understeer sounds satisfying, IV’s learning curve is part of its appeal. If restarting a mission because a car behaved unpredictably would frustrate you, V’s consistency is likely the better match.

Vehicle variety and why the roster matters

Traxion counts just under 120 cars and motorcycles in GTA IV. That figure matters less as a collection number than as evidence of the game’s attempt to make vehicles feel mechanically distinct. The Comet and Blista example shows how engine placement and driven wheels can change the experience, not merely the appearance.

V’s vehicles are easier to approach as a group because the handling model is more forgiving. You can still prefer one car’s acceleration or stability, but the game does not demand the same level of adaptation before you can perform a clean evasive maneuver. Players who enjoy comparing mechanical personalities will find more pronounced contrasts in IV; players who want a dependable tool for every mission will generally have an easier time in V.

Perspective, controls, and accessibility

Perspective is one of V’s clearest advantages. Rockstar’s guide confirms that first-person mode can be selected for driving independently of the third-person view used while running and fighting. This allows a player to keep the road visually intimate without sacrificing the broader view preferred during on-foot combat.

IV’s immersion is less about camera options and more about what the existing view communicates through motion. Body roll, suspension loading, and crash deformation make the vehicle feel present even when you remain in a traditional third-person perspective.

Controller choice can affect comfort and feedback, but it does not change the underlying design priorities. A controller with stronger tactile feedback may make first-person driving in V feel more immediate; it will not turn V’s forgiving model into IV’s weightier one. Likewise, a different controller cannot remove IV’s need for careful braking and steering.

What Rockstar’s later physics comments suggest

In a 2026 GamesRadar interview, Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson said a newer physics effort aimed to preserve “some of the best parts of the weightiness and feel of GTA 4” while retaining “the accessibility of GTA 5.” He also described tuning drivetrain, tires, suspension, and steering from scratch on newer hardware.

That comment is useful context for this comparison: the two games represent different ends of a design balance rather than a simple old-versus-new progression. Weight and accessibility can coexist, but each game emphasizes a different side of that balance. The statement does not change the controls of IV or V, and it should not be read as a specification for either game’s existing edition.

Limitations that can change your experience

  • Platform ports and patches: timing, performance, and input behavior can vary between console and PC versions.
  • Mods: PC modifications can alter handling, damage, camera behavior, or vehicle statistics.
  • Controller settings: dead zones, sensitivity, and vibration influence how easily you make small corrections.
  • Player skill: someone accustomed to IV’s weight may find it natural, while a new player may initially interpret the same behavior as unresponsive.
  • Perspective preference: first-person driving can increase the sense of presence for one player and reduce situational awareness for another.

These variables explain why two players can report different levels of “realism” without either being mistaken. The stable distinction is the design intent: IV demands more management of mass and momentum, while V makes the same situations easier to read and recover from.

Which one should you play?

Pick GTA IV if you want:

  • Heavy cars with pronounced body roll and weight transfer.
  • Braking and suspension management to matter before every serious corner.
  • More visible crash deformation and stronger physical consequences.
  • Noticeable drivetrain differences, such as the Comet and Blista contrast.
  • A grimier, more oppressive Liberty City atmosphere.

Pick GTA V if you want:

  • Controls that are tight, predictable, and quick to learn.
  • More forgiving driving during missions and pursuits.
  • A brighter, broader sandbox with less friction between activities.
  • Official first-person driving alongside third-person movement on foot.
  • A current enhanced edition listed by Rockstar, subject to platform and region.

If you can play both, start with the one that matches your tolerance for correction. IV is the stronger driving and physics showcase; V is the stronger all-purpose driving game. For atmosphere, IV’s Liberty City is more cohesive and oppressive, while V’s perspective options and accessible handling make Los Santos easier to inhabit for longer sessions.
