For most new buyers, the native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition is the right choice if you own a current-generation console. On PC, buy the PC version if your system meets the Enhanced requirements; that purchase also includes Legacy for older hardware. Choose PS4 or Xbox One when you only have last-generation hardware or find a substantially cheaper compatible copy.
The important differences are not just graphics. Edition choice affects loading, ray tracing, frame-rate options, GTA Online content, storage, migration and whether your computer can run the game reliably. This guide separates those decisions so you can buy once and avoid an incompatible copy.

Store prices, promotions, regional availability and subscription rules change. Check the live store page for your country and edition immediately before checkout rather than relying on an old price screenshot or bundle description.
What the PC purchase actually includes
Enhanced and Legacy are two PC builds
Rockstar’s PC purchase includes both GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy. The company describes Legacy as the included option for hardware that does not meet the minimum requirements for Enhanced. You do not need to make a second purchase to use the older build.

Enhanced is the forward-looking PC version. It adds ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, ray-traced shadows and reflections, AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS support, faster loading through SSD and DirectStorage, 3D audio, and newer GTA Online content such as Hao’s Special Works and Career Builder. Those additions matter most if you have a modern graphics card, a fast storage drive and a display capable of showing the extra detail or frame-rate options.
Legacy is the practical choice for an older computer. It does not require the Enhanced hardware baseline, and it remains part of the PC purchase. If you later upgrade your computer, Rockstar documents a one-time migration from PC Legacy to Enhanced.
PC Enhanced system requirements
These are Rockstar’s current requirements as listed in 2026. Meeting the minimum is a starting point, not a promise of a particular resolution or frame rate; your settings, display, background software and driver version still affect performance.

The 105 GB figure is the stated Enhanced requirement, and Rockstar specifies an SSD. Leave additional free space for updates and normal operating-system overhead; installing exactly at the listed capacity can make future patches fail.
PC Legacy system requirements

Legacy’s listed storage minimum is 125 GB, which is larger than Enhanced’s 105 GB requirement. Treat those numbers as separate requirements for separate builds, not as an indication that Legacy has more modern features.
PC requirements that are easy to miss
- You need a Rockstar account and an internet connection for installation and online play.
- A computer that boots the game but falls below the graphics or memory requirement may still suffer crashes, freezes or poor performance.
- DLSS and FSR are support options, not guarantees that every graphics card can use both. Availability depends on the hardware and driver path supported by the game.
- DirectStorage benefits require compatible storage and system support; an SSD alone does not make every loading improvement automatic.
PS5: the best console choice for current-generation owners
The native PS5 listing includes GTAV Story Mode and GTA Online. It advertises faster loading, ray tracing, up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second, with modes determined by the game and your display. You also get DualSense adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Tempest 3D Audio.
Those features make PS5 the clearest upgrade over PS4 when you care about responsiveness and visual presentation. Ray tracing can improve lighting, shadows and reflections, while the higher frame-rate option makes driving and aiming feel more immediate. The exact balance between resolution, ray tracing and frame rate is mode-dependent, so do not interpret “up to 4K/60” as a guarantee that every mode runs at native 4K and 60 simultaneously.

Moving from PS4 to PS5
PlayStation supports a one-time migration from PS4 to PS5 for both Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression. Migration is tied to the PlayStation family; a PlayStation profile is not a license to move the same progress to Xbox.
Before starting, make sure you are signed into the intended Rockstar and PlayStation accounts. Select the migration option offered by the PS5 version, review the profile shown, and confirm only when it is the account you want to keep. Because the transfer is one-time, do not treat it as a routine synchronization mechanism for repeatedly moving saves between consoles.
Xbox Series X|S: one native edition, two performance tiers
The native Xbox Series X|S product is optimized for both current-generation consoles. Microsoft lists 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, Dolby Atmos, Series X|S optimization and online multiplayer for 2–30 players. The Series X has the more powerful hardware; Series S is the lower-cost, lower-spec console and should be viewed accordingly when choosing display and performance expectations.
The Xbox cross-generation bundle includes the digital Xbox One version and the digital Xbox Series X|S version, including Series X|S Story Mode. That makes the bundle useful if you currently use Xbox One but expect to move to a Series console, because you are not buying an entirely separate generation later.

Moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S
Xbox supports one-time migration from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S. Use the same Microsoft and Rockstar account identities on the new console, launch the native Series version and follow its migration prompt. The transfer is family-specific and should not be assumed to work across PlayStation and Xbox.
PS4 and Xbox One: when the older editions still make sense
PS4 and Xbox One remain sensible purchases when those are the consoles you own and you are not planning an immediate hardware upgrade. They let you play Story Mode and GTA Online without paying for current-generation hardware.
The trade-off is access to the native-generation improvements described above. You should not buy a last-generation copy expecting it to transform into the PS5 or Series build on an older console. If you already own the older version and later buy the newer console, use the platform-specific migration path instead.

For Xbox buyers, pay attention to whether a listing is the cross-generation bundle or an Xbox One-only product. The bundle explicitly grants both digital versions, while a cheaper older listing may not include the native Series entitlement.

“Not stated” means the cited product information does not establish a value; it is not a claim that the feature is impossible. Console resolution and performance can also vary by display mode, hardware model and game settings.
GTA Online, player counts and subscriptions
The Xbox listing specifies online multiplayer for 2–30 players, and Rockstar and Microsoft product descriptions support sessions of up to 30 players. A larger advertised player count does not mean every activity uses the full capacity; individual jobs, playlists and private sessions can have their own limits.
PlayStation states that PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer. Confirm the current PlayStation subscription tier and any regional exception on the live store page before purchase, because platform terms can change.
The PC purchase requires an internet connection for installation and online play, in addition to a Rockstar account. Keep account credentials consistent when migrating or switching between Legacy and Enhanced; buying the game on one storefront does not automatically merge unrelated Rockstar profiles.

Migration is tied to a platform family
The supported paths are PS4 to PS5, Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, and PC Legacy to PC Enhanced. There is no evidence that a PlayStation profile can be transferred to Xbox, or that a console character can be converted into a PC character through these tools.
Migration is a one-time decision
Each documented path is one-time. Check the account, character and save data shown on the confirmation screen before accepting. Keep the old installation until you have verified the migrated Story Mode save and GTA Online profile on the new version.

Migration is not a second license
A successful transfer moves eligible progress; it does not turn one platform purchase into a license for every other platform. You still need the appropriate edition for the hardware on which you want to play.
Storage, hardware and display decisions
PC storage
Enhanced requires a 105 GB SSD, while Legacy lists 125 GB of storage. If you intend to keep both builds installed, plan for both installations plus update headroom rather than assuming the two requirements overlap perfectly.

The supplied console listings do not state installation sizes. Use the free-space figure shown by your console’s store at checkout and reserve room for updates. A nearly full drive can prevent a correctly purchased game from installing or patching.
Display and audio
PS5’s up-to-4K/60 presentation is most useful with a display that supports the chosen resolution and refresh rate. Tempest 3D Audio and Dolby Atmos features likewise require compatible audio equipment or settings to be enabled. These capabilities do not make a low-resolution television display 4K, and they do not guarantee that every sound system exposes every positional-audio effect.

- Identify your hardware. Write down the exact console model, or compare your PC processor, graphics card, RAM, Windows version and available SSD space with the Enhanced table.
- Choose the native build. Select PS5 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S for a Series console, and PC Enhanced when your computer meets the minimum. Use PS4, Xbox One or PC Legacy only when your hardware requires it.
- Check the edition name. On Xbox, verify whether the listing includes both Xbox One and Series X|S digital versions. On PC, verify that the purchase states Enhanced and Legacy are both included.
- Confirm region and current terms. Review the live store price, promotion end date, currency, language, subscription requirement and online-access terms for your country.
- Check account identity. Sign into the Rockstar and console account you intend to use. This prevents a one-time migration from being attached to the wrong profile.
- Reserve storage. On PC, meet the stated 105 GB SSD or 125 GB Legacy requirement and leave update headroom. On console, use the store’s current installation-size estimate.
- Install and update before migrating. Complete system and game updates, then launch the native edition and use its migration prompt if you are moving existing progress.
- Verify your data. Open Story Mode and GTA Online, check the expected save and character, and only then remove the old installation.
Common mistakes and fixes
Buying a last-generation version for a new console
A PS4 or Xbox One copy is not automatically the native PS5 or Series experience. Check the product title and entitlement before paying. On Xbox, the cross-generation bundle is the listing that explicitly includes both digital generations.
Assuming “up to 4K/60” is one universal mode
PS5 advertises up to 4K and up to 60 fps, but the selected mode and display determine the result. Try the available graphics modes rather than expecting native 4K, ray tracing and 60 fps in every combination.
Installing Enhanced on an under-spec PC
Compare every minimum requirement, not just the processor. Insufficient VRAM, system memory or SSD space can produce crashes and poor performance even when the game launches. Install Legacy instead when the computer falls below Enhanced’s baseline.

Expecting cross-platform character transfer
Migration is family-specific. A PlayStation character does not become an Xbox character through the PS5 or Series migration tools. Keep the same platform family when preserving progress.
Using migration as continuous synchronization
The documented transfers are one-time. Treat the new version as the destination, verify the result, and do not plan on repeatedly shuttling the same save back and forth.
Running out of disk space during an update
Free space must cover the installation and temporary patch files. Remove unused games or expand storage before starting a large update, especially on PC where Enhanced and Legacy have separate stated requirements.
Ignoring account and connection requirements
PC installation and online play require a Rockstar account and internet connection. On PlayStation, online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus according to the product listing. Resolve sign-in, service or subscription issues before troubleshooting graphics settings.
Which version should you buy?
Buy PS5 when you own a PS5
It is the straightforward choice for current-generation PlayStation hardware: faster loading, ray tracing, up-to-4K/60 modes, DualSense features, Tempest 3D Audio and one-time PS4 migration.
Buy Xbox Series X|S when you own a Series console
Choose the native Series edition for Series optimization, HDR10, Dolby Atmos and the listed 2–30-player online support. If you still use Xbox One but expect to upgrade, confirm that the cross-generation bundle is included.
Buy PC Enhanced when your computer qualifies
Enhanced is the best PC option for a system at or above the listed baseline, particularly if you want ray tracing, DLSS or FSR, faster SSD/DirectStorage loading and the newer GTA Online features. Legacy remains included if you need to fall back.

Legacy is the honest choice for a computer below the Enhanced minimum. You get a playable PC build without gambling on unstable performance, and you can migrate once if you later upgrade.
Stay on PS4 or Xbox One when that is your hardware
Last-generation editions are appropriate when replacing the console is not part of your plan or when the compatible copy is materially cheaper. Do not pay for a newer edition whose benefits your current hardware cannot use.
Release dates and edition context
Rockstar’s store listing gives the original PC release date as April 14, 2015. Microsoft lists June 15, 2022 for the Xbox One/Series bundle. These dates identify the products and bundles; they do not indicate that store pricing, online terms or included promotions remain unchanged.
