Reports published on December 25–26, 2023, said purported Grand Theft Auto V source code had appeared online late on Christmas Eve. The reports also described claims about GTA VI code and Bully 2 files, but they did not establish that Rockstar confirmed those materials or that a complete GTA V codebase was publicly available.
What was reported in December 2023?
RockstarINTEL reported on December 25 that purported GTA V source code had become available online late on December 24. Its account also warned that misinformation was spreading about possible consequences for GTA Online, GTA VI, Bully 2, and other Rockstar titles. RockstarINTEL’s December 25 report

TechSpot’s December 26 account said the leak’s full extent was unclear. It described reports of a 4 GB file, while noting disagreement over whether that was the whole codebase. The size was therefore an unconfirmed claim, not a verified measurement of a complete source tree. TechSpot’s December 26 account
What did reports say the files contained?
RockstarINTEL described alleged RAGE engine images and release notes, internal employee emails, references to cancelled GTA V downloadable content, and scripts containing GTA VI-related strings. These are descriptions in that report; the reviewed accounts do not independently authenticate each item. RockstarINTEL’s report on alleged contents

TechSpot attributed claims about Bully 2 files and GTA VI code to reports and online claims. A reference to a game or code in purported material does not, by itself, establish the material’s authenticity, completeness, or a project’s development status.
What the reports did not establish
- A complete GTA V source tree: The accounts did not resolve whether the full codebase was available; reported file-size claims were disputed.
- Rockstar confirmation: The reviewed reports did not establish that Rockstar confirmed the December 2023 material’s scope or authenticated each alleged file.
- Bully 2’s status: Reports of files or references do not prove that Bully 2 was in active development.
- GTA Online or GTA VI impact: The December reports did not demonstrate that the circulation disrupted online services or affected GTA VI development.
How this differed from the 2022 Rockstar intrusion
The December 2023 reports should not be conflated with the earlier intrusion Rockstar disclosed in September 2022. Axios reported Rockstar’s description of that incident as “a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems.” The incident involved in-development GTA VI footage.

In the same reporting about the 2022 incident, Rockstar said: “At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.” That assurance concerned the 2022 intrusion; it was not a verified company response to the December 2023 circulation.
