The important distinction is certainty. Rockstar has documented GTA V’s map, missions, PC edition and online systems in detail. This table separates facts that are already documented from features that remain unannounced. In particular, the absence of a GTA VI map measurement or online specification is not evidence that those features will not exist; it means Rockstar has not supplied figures that can be checked yet.

GTA V’s Los Santos and Blaine County
GTA V takes place in Los Santos and the surrounding Blaine County. Los Santos is a dense, fictionalized coastal metropolis, while Blaine County extends the playable setting into smaller communities and open country. The campaign uses that contrast to move between urban crime, rural pursuits and large-scale heists. Rockstar’s story description frames the cast as three criminals: a young street hustler, a retired bank robber and a psychopath whose lives become entangled in dangerous jobs.

Because GTA V has been available for years, players know how its roads, neighborhoods, countryside and mission spaces connect in practice. The map is not merely a backdrop: protagonists can switch between locations, approach activities by road or air, and use the contrast between city and county to vary mission pacing.
GTA VI’s Leonida and Vice City
GTA VI moves to the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City identified as its principal city. Rockstar’s official synopsis follows Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong. They end up on the darkest side of what Rockstar calls the sunniest place in America, caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state.
That wording confirms a state-wide story scope rather than a city-only setting. It does not, however, provide a surveyed area, a percentage increase over GTA V, a coastline length or a count of settlements. Screenshots and trailers can suggest visual variety, but they are not a defensible substitute for an official map measurement.

A useful map comparison has four separate axes:
- Geographic variety: the kinds of environments and communities represented, not just the outer boundary.
- Density: how much usable activity and built space appears in a given area.
- Traversal: how roads, waterways and other routes connect destinations and how long typical journeys take.
- Activity design: whether locations host missions, side activities, businesses or social spaces instead of serving as scenery only.
GTA V has proven examples on all four axes because its world and activities are playable now. GTA VI’s setting establishes the comparison’s names and broad scope, but Rockstar has not yet documented enough to score its density, traversal or activity design. Claims that GTA VI is a specific percentage larger, or exactly twice the size of GTA V, should therefore be treated as unverified.

GTA V’s three-protagonist heist structure
GTA V’s defining narrative device is character switching. The young street hustler, retired bank robber and volatile psychopath each bring a different history, social circle and mission context. The campaign lets you move between them and then brings their perspectives together for coordinated criminal operations.
Heists provide the campaign’s structural spine. Planning determines how a job is prepared and performed, while the playable characters let a single operation shift between different roles. That design gives GTA V a broader ensemble viewpoint than a traditional one-protagonist crime story.

GTA VI’s Jason-and-Lucia story
GTA VI confirms two central protagonists: Jason and Lucia. Rockstar describes them as people who have always known the deck is stacked against them. After an easy score fails, they are drawn into a conspiracy that reaches across Leonida. The published premise establishes their partnership and the scale of the threat, but it does not publish a complete mission list or a full breakdown of character-switching rules.
The practical difference is therefore clear at the level of premise. GTA V is an established three-character campaign organized around documented heists. GTA VI is a two-character story whose detailed mission systems will be learned from Rockstar’s subsequent documentation and the released game.
What remains unknown about GTA VI missions
Rockstar has not supplied a complete list of GTA VI mechanics covering mission branching, optional approaches, side activities, vehicle systems, economy, police behavior or progression. It would be inaccurate to present any of those as confirmed features merely because they existed in earlier games. The safest buying decision is to evaluate GTA VI on its confirmed single-player premise and setting, not on an assumed feature checklist.
Gameplay, world interaction and presentation
Protagonist structure and player choice
GTA V’s switching system is a documented mechanical difference: the player follows three criminals and can move among their story perspectives. GTA VI’s confirmed proposition centers on Jason and Lucia. Whether switching is available at the same frequency, restricted to particular missions or handled differently is not stated in the official material reviewed.
Heists and mission pacing
GTA V explicitly builds toward planning and performing heists. That gives the campaign a recognizable rhythm of preparation, execution and aftermath. GTA VI’s synopsis confirms a failed score and a state-wide conspiracy, but does not promise a particular heist-planning interface or repeat GTA V’s structure.

Systemic world interaction
GTA V can be assessed through its released activities, vehicles, combat, property systems and side content. GTA VI’s official product information confirms a single-player experience and advertises an in-game radio and music offering, but it does not provide a complete mechanics catalogue. Comparisons about artificial intelligence, emergent events, interiors or property ownership should wait for documented information rather than being treated as launch facts.

Graphics and platform generation
The current PC Enhanced edition of GTA V adds ray-traced graphics modes, faster loading, 3D audio and DualSense features where supported. Those are concrete improvements over the older PC Legacy presentation, although exact feature support depends on compatible hardware and peripherals.
GTA VI is announced as a current-generation console release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its positioning as the next major entry makes newer hardware central to the launch proposition, but Rockstar has not published a PC version or PC system requirements. No PC release date should be assumed.
Online features: a mature service versus an undisclosed offering
What GTA Online includes today
Rockstar describes GTA Online in the current GTAV product as an ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players. Its documented activities include cooperative heists, Stunt Races, Adversary Modes, nightclubs, arcades, penthouse parties, car meetups and businesses. Rockstar also lists more than 40 updates.
That breadth matters when choosing a game. GTA Online is not simply a multiplayer lobby attached to the campaign; it is a long-running service with progression from street-level hustler to the owner of a criminal empire. Players can approach it as a cooperative activity set, a competitive playlist, a vehicle-focused social space or a business-management game.
What Rockstar has said about GTA VI online
Rockstar’s GTA VI launch and support materials confirm the single-player experience, platforms, editions and bonuses. They do not publish a detailed GTA VI online feature list in the official material reviewed.

This uncertainty is the central online difference. GTA V can be selected for known multiplayer systems and an established content history. GTA VI may eventually offer an online service, but its player count, progression and feature mix should not be presented as facts before Rockstar publishes them.

Platforms, launch timing and editions
GTA VI launch details
Rockstar and Take-Two announce GTA VI for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The announced Standard Edition price is $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition price is $99.99. Those are the publisher’s stated dollar prices; a local store may display a different regional currency or tax-inclusive total.
Pre-orders begin June 25, 2026 according to the Take-Two/Rockstar announcement. The physical version contains a digital download code rather than a game disc, and pre-loading begins November 12, 2026. Buyers using a physical console edition should therefore ensure the console can redeem and download the code before launch.
Official materials reviewed for this comparison list PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Rockstar has not announced a PC version or a PC release date, so a PC launch should not be included in a purchase plan as though it were confirmed.
GTA V on PC
GTA V is already sold for PC in Enhanced and Legacy versions. Rockstar’s store information gives the PC product a 2015 release date and publishes current requirements. The Enhanced edition requires an SSD and lists 105 GB of disk space in both its minimum and recommended configurations.

Should you buy GTA V now or wait for GTA VI?
Choose GTA V now if immediate play matters
GTA V is the practical choice for someone who wants a complete campaign or online play today. Its three-protagonist story, documented heist structure and available PC Enhanced edition can be evaluated without waiting for a release date. The same applies to GTA Online: its activities, 30-player ceiling and update history are known quantities.
Wait for GTA VI if the new setting is your priority
Waiting makes sense if your main interest is Jason and Lucia, Vice City and a story set across Leonida. You will need a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S at launch, and you should budget around the publisher’s announced Standard or Ultimate Edition price. Do not buy on the assumption that a PC edition will arrive at the same time.
Pick based on online certainty
If multiplayer is the deciding factor, GTA V is the only option in this comparison with a fully documented service. GTA VI’s online plans may be announced later, but its launch player count, modes, progression and cross-play status are not established by the available official materials.

Use GTA V as a low-risk introduction to the series
New players can use GTA V to learn the series’ driving, shooting, mission and open-world conventions while deciding whether GTA VI is worth a day-one purchase. The two games share a crime-sandbox identity, but the protagonists, setting and confirmed online information differ enough that playing GTA V does not make GTA VI redundant.
Is GTA VI bigger than GTA V?
There is no verified official area comparison. Rockstar confirms Leonida as GTA VI’s state-wide setting and Los Santos/Blaine County as GTA V’s setting, but it has not published map square mileage, a percentage increase or a reliable twice-as-large figure. The only accurate answer today is that GTA VI’s map size has not been quantified publicly.
For a meaningful post-launch comparison, measure more than the outline. Compare the amount of traversable land and water, the density of interactive locations, travel time between major areas, mission use of remote regions and the number of activities that give those regions a purpose. GTA V is the better recommendation for immediate access, a proven three-protagonist campaign, PC play and a fully documented online ecosystem. GTA VI is the more relevant choice for players prepared to wait for a new-generation Jason-and-Lucia story in Leonida and Vice City. Its launch date, platforms and edition prices are known, but its precise map size and online feature set are not.

GTA V offers evidence: a playable Los Santos/Blaine County world and a mature service with up to 30 players and more than 40 updates. GTA VI offers a confirmed direction but still leaves important systems to be documented. Buy GTA V when certainty and current play matter; choose GTA VI when its upcoming setting and campaign are worth waiting for.
