The jetpack is also unusually memorable because it belongs to the single-player sandbox rather than a separate competitive mode. It supports experimentation, shortcuts and playful movement in a way that ordinary cars, boats and aircraft do not. You can approach spaces from above, hover around structures and use flight as an alternative to road travel. GTA V: a full aviation layer, with the jetpack separated from the campaign
- More aircraft classes: Light planes, helicopters, personal jets and military-style fighters each support different activities.
- Structured flying: Air races and mission objectives make aviation part of a broader activity set.
- Skill progression: Flying skill affects aircraft performance and can be improved through regular flying and Pilot School.
- Online specialization: The Thruster adds armed jetpack combat to a specific GTA Online mode rather than replacing the normal aircraft system.

GTA V’s three-protagonist structure
GTA V’s campaign is organized around Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Each has a separate life that can be explored outside missions, and the game allows real-time switching between them in appropriate situations. Missions can involve two or all three characters, letting the design move between different abilities, locations and viewpoints without ending the broader story.
The protagonists’ stats improve with experience. That progression gives ordinary activities a mechanical purpose: the character you use for a task can become more capable at related actions over time. The structure also supports varied mission pacing, moving from planning and driving to shooting, flying or coordinated set pieces.
San Andreas’s focused classic sandbox
San Andreas is the better fit when you prefer one central protagonist and a more concentrated open-world identity. Its appeal comes from the combination of a large classic map, vehicle variety and memorable standalone systems such as the jetpack. The game does not need a rotating cast or a live service to justify returning to its world; the sandbox itself supplies the experimentation.

Aircraft variety
GTA V’s manual identifies several aviation categories: P-996 Lazer jets, light planes, personal jets and helicopters. The variety changes what flying means. A light plane can support relaxed exploration, a helicopter offers hovering and precision, and a fighter jet emphasizes speed and combat. Air races turn the same systems into timed competition.

Rockstar’s update notes also document additions and balancing changes involving the P-996 Lazer, as well as cannon and vertical-takeoff-and-landing adjustments for the Lazer and Hydra. These changes show that GTA V’s aircraft are part of a maintained system rather than a one-off campaign feature.
Flying skill and Pilot School
Flying skill influences aircraft performance. You can improve it by flying and by completing Pilot School activities. This creates a progression loop that San Andreas’s jetpack does not replicate in the same way: practice is not only about learning the controls, but also about making the character more capable in the air.
If you want a game that treats aviation as a discipline with multiple vehicle roles and a measurable character skill, GTA V is the stronger choice. If you want a single device that immediately grants personal flight, San Andreas is still more satisfying.

In Story Mode, GTA V’s strengths are its three-character campaign, switching system, heist-oriented missions and broad aircraft selection. The Thruster should not be counted as a standard Story Mode jetpack comparison simply because it appears in GTA Online content. GTA Online is described by Rockstar as a dynamic, ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players. Its continuing gameplay upgrades, expansions and post-launch content make GTA V the better choice for players who want an ongoing service rather than a finished campaign. The Thruster’s missiles and cannon give the jetpack-like vehicle a combat role that does not exist in San Andreas’s classic sandbox in the same form.
Online breadth comes with trade-offs. You are choosing a multiplayer ecosystem whose content and availability can change, not just a fixed set of missions. Your preferred platform, edition and region can affect which current features are accessible. For a self-contained solo experience, San Andreas remains the simpler purchase decision.

The original San Andreas preserves the classic control feel and presentation. This is the direct collection product to consider if you want San Andreas’s jetpack and a more contemporary presentation.
The Definitive Edition modernizes the package, but it does not turn San Andreas into GTA V. The campaign structure, jetpack concept and classic sandbox remain San Andreas’s own. Select this edition when updated visuals and controls matter; select the original when preserving the older presentation is more important.
GTA V editions and platform differences
GTA V is the modern-design option, with its three-character campaign, flight progression and access to GTA Online. Current-generation versions can include platform-specific technical upgrades, so check the exact edition and platform before buying. Buy the San Andreas Trilogy when the jetpack and classic sandbox are the priority
