Call of Duty has the documented online product today; GTA VI does not yet have a published online specification. Black Ops 7 combines paid Multiplayer, Zombies and cooperative content with shared progression into free-to-play Warzone, whose Battle Royale and Resurgence matches are built around squad combat. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, but Rockstar has not confirmed GTA VI Online’s player count, launch modes, cross-play, progression, monetization or even whether a separate online service will be available on launch day. The fairest comparison is therefore Call of Duty’s known systems against the established GTA Online model, while treating every GTA VI Online feature as unannounced.
What is available, and what is still unannounced
GTA VI has a date and launch platforms, but no online design brief
Rockstar has announced Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Take-Two’s pre-order announcement lists a $79.99 standard edition for those consoles. Rockstar’s support information says the physical edition contains a download code, so a disc purchase does not necessarily mean the game’s data is supplied on the disc itself.

Those are confirmed facts about the premium console release, not a specification for an online component. Rockstar’s current GTA VI product materials do not state how many people could share a session, which activities would be available online, whether progression would carry between activities, whether cross-play would be supported, how online purchases would work, or whether an online mode would launch alongside the story campaign. Any comparison that presents those details as settled is making assumptions rather than reporting Rockstar’s announcement.

Call of Duty’s current online choice is split between a paid package and a free entry point. Black Ops 7 is the paid release, available on Xbox, Xbox PC, PlayStation, Battle.net and Steam. Activision lists Cross-Gen/Standard and Vault editions, along with Game Pass availability. Buying the game unlocks its Multiplayer and Zombies content, as well as cooperative material, while Warzone remains free to play.
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
Warzone’s official positioning is a free-to-play combat experience. Its named headline modes include Battle Royale and Resurgence. You can therefore try Call of Duty’s squad combat without first buying Black Ops 7; purchasing Black Ops 7 is for players who also want the traditional Multiplayer and Zombies package.

How the two online experiences are built
GTA Online is a place you return to
Rockstar describes the existing GTA Online service as “a dynamic world for up to 30 players, featuring all updates and content since launch, playable solo or with friends.” That description explains why GTA and Call of Duty feel different even when both are played in a squad.
A persistent world gives a group room to choose its own pace. Players can meet, drive across the map, start an activity, pursue an objective or simply spend time together without a single match countdown deciding when the session ends. Solo play is part of the stated model, so joining friends is not the only intended way to use the world.
That is a description of GTA Online, not confirmation of GTA VI Online. It is a useful baseline for understanding the series’ established online identity, but it cannot prove that GTA VI will retain the same player limit, activities, businesses, mission structure or social systems.
Warzone is a match with a clear win condition
Warzone is organized around self-contained matches. In Battle Royale, squads loot equipment, fight other teams and try to be the last squad standing while gas progressively shrinks the playable area. The closing arena forces encounters even when teams would otherwise avoid one another.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Resurgence changes the rhythm by allowing fallen teammates to redeploy under the mode’s rules. A mistake does not always remove a player from the entire match, so squads can take more aggressive fights and recover from an early loss. The result is still a competitive match rather than a continuously inhabited city.
Activision’s Season 02 Reloaded announcement gives a scale example for Black Ops Royale: 100 players loot from scratch and fight to be the last squad standing. That figure describes the announced mode in that seasonal communication; it should not be treated as a universal player count for every Warzone playlist.
Black Ops 7 adds structured modes outside Warzone
Warzone is only one part of the Call of Duty ecosystem. Black Ops 7 supplies traditional Multiplayer, Zombies, a Co-op Campaign and Dead Ops Arcade 4. The paid package is therefore designed for players who want repeatable round-based or objective-based sessions as well as the large survival-match format.
Activision also highlights omnimovement and wall jumps for Black Ops 7. Those mechanics make movement itself part of the competitive skill set: positioning, sprint direction and vertical routes can matter as much as aim. They are distinct from GTA Online’s driving-and-exploration emphasis and reinforce Call of Duty’s focus on fast, weapon-centered encounters.
Modes, teamwork and the way time is spent
Choose GTA’s model when the activity is the point
The established GTA Online frame suits groups that want an open-ended evening. A session can be organized around a shared objective, but it does not have to be. The appeal is the ability to move between driving, exploration, missions and social activities in one persistent space, with solo play available when friends are offline.

That flexibility also means the game may not provide the same immediate competitive feedback as a Warzone match. There is no confirmed GTA VI equivalent of Battle Royale, Resurgence or Black Ops 7’s traditional Multiplayer. Until Rockstar describes its online plans, it is safer to expect only the confirmed single-player release and treat a future online mode as a separate question.

Choose Call of Duty when every session needs a defined contest
Warzone gives a group a simple structure: assemble a squad, land, find equipment, make rotations, win fights and survive the closing circle. Resurgence offers more opportunities to return after being eliminated, while Battle Royale gives the clearest last-team-standing test.
Black Ops 7 broadens the choice for groups with different preferences. One player can practice movement in Multiplayer, another can join Zombies, and the group can still use Warzone without abandoning the same overall progression ecosystem. The paid package is most useful when the group wants those additional modes rather than only the free battle-royale experience.
Progression and what your purchase unlocks
Call of Duty’s documented shared XP
Activision says XP is earned across Black Ops 7 Multiplayer, Co-op Campaign, Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade 4 and Warzone. That cross-mode progression gives a player a reason to vary activities: time spent in one mode contributes to advancement in the broader Call of Duty package.
The paid/free split matters here. Warzone is the free entry point, but buying Black Ops 7 adds Multiplayer, Zombies and the other paid modes to the same progression environment. You do not need Black Ops 7 merely to try Warzone; you need it for the additional Black Ops 7 content.

GTA VI’s progression is a blank space, not a promise
Rockstar has not published a GTA VI Online progression system. There is no official statement establishing shared levels, character carryover, businesses, unlock trees, battle passes, seasonal resets or a connection to the existing GTA Online service. Those systems may eventually be explained, but they cannot be used in a present-day buying comparison.
For that reason, a player choosing between the games should value what is documented. Call of Duty can be judged on its current mode list and shared XP statement. GTA VI can be judged on its announced launch platform, price and the known single-player release, while the online purchase decision must wait for Rockstar’s specification.
Platforms, editions and the practical cost of trying each game
GTA VI requirements
- PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S is required for the announced release.
- The standard edition price announced by Take-Two is $79.99.
- The announced date is November 19, 2026.
- Rockstar’s support page says the physical edition contains a download code.
- No online subscription, cross-play policy or separate online price has been announced for GTA VI.
Call of Duty requirements
- Warzone is free to play and is offered on console and PC.
- Black Ops 7 is listed for Xbox, Xbox PC, PlayStation, Battle.net and Steam.
- Black Ops 7 is the paid route to its Multiplayer, Zombies, Co-op Campaign and Dead Ops Arcade 4 content.
- Activision lists Cross-Gen/Standard and Vault editions, plus Game Pass availability.
These are different entry decisions. A player searching for “Grand Theft Auto VI PS5” is looking at a paid console release whose online details are pending. A player who wants to try Call of Duty immediately can install Warzone without buying Black Ops 7, then decide whether the paid modes justify the purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will GTA 6 Online be bigger than Warzone?
There is no responsible yes-or-no answer yet. “Bigger” could mean more simultaneous players, a larger physical map, more activities, a longer-running service, a larger community or more content updates. Rockstar has not supplied the player-count, mode, cross-play or service details needed to compare those measures.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The known GTA Online baseline is a persistent world for up to 30 players. Warzone’s documented examples are match-based, including a 100-player Black Ops Royale announcement, but playlist sizes can differ and a match’s player count is not the same as the size of an open-world service. Comparing the numbers directly would confuse two different designs.

- Join the revolution as Dani Rojas and liberate your nation from Anton Castillo's oppression.
- Dive into a blockbuster experience and immerse yourself in the journey of a guerrilla revolutionary.
- Explore the largest open world in Far Cry history, including the first ever sprawling urban city.
- Discover new animal companions like Chorizo, the adorable wiener dog, to take down enemies.

What can be said now is that GTA’s established appeal is breadth within a shared world, while Warzone’s appeal is concentrated competition with a defined end state. GTA VI could follow the former, reinvent it or introduce a different structure. Rockstar’s first detailed online announcement will need to answer the practical questions before anyone can call it larger or smaller than Warzone.
Which game is better for playing with friends?
Pick the GTA model if your group wants
- An open world where players can move between activities instead of queueing for a new match after every result.
- Driving, exploration, crime-themed scenarios and social play as the established GTA Online foundation.
- The option to play solo when the rest of the group is unavailable.
- A relaxed session in which winning is not the only measure of success.
Apply those points to GTA Online’s documented model, not to unannounced GTA VI features. The upcoming game may preserve the formula, but Rockstar has not promised that it will.
Pick Call of Duty if your group wants
- A clear competitive objective and a match that ends with a winner.
- Battle Royale’s shrinking gas circle and last-squad-standing pressure.
- Resurgence redeploys that let a squad recover from an elimination.
- More structured choices through Black Ops 7 Multiplayer, Zombies and cooperative content.
- Progression that Activision says spans the paid modes and Warzone.
Warzone is the lower-risk trial because it is free. If your group enjoys the gunplay and wants the additional modes, Black Ops 7 is the purchase that expands the package.

Questions to answer before buying
- Do you need to play before November 19, 2026? If yes, GTA VI is not the practical choice because its announced release date is in the future. Warzone and Black Ops 7 are the available Call of Duty options.
- Do you want an open world or a match? GTA Online’s established model is persistent and social; Warzone is a discrete survival match; Black Ops 7 adds conventional Multiplayer and Zombies.
- Is a free trial important? Warzone can be played free. GTA VI is announced as a $79.99 paid console release, and its online pricing is not stated.
- Does your group need a confirmed progression system? Call of Duty has Activision’s cross-mode XP statement. GTA VI Online progression has not been described.
- Are you choosing a platform now? GTA VI is announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Black Ops 7 spans Xbox, Xbox PC, PlayStation, Battle.net and Steam; Warzone is available on console and PC.
What Rockstar still needs to explain
A meaningful GTA VI Online comparison will require answers to several specific questions:
- Will an online mode launch on November 19, 2026, or arrive later?
- How many players can occupy one session, and is that number shared across all activities?
- Which activities are available at launch: missions, races, competitive modes, social spaces or other formats?
- Will PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players share sessions, and will cross-play extend beyond those consoles?
- Does progression use a persistent character, shared account levels, businesses, seasonal content or another system?
- Is online access included with the standard GTA VI purchase, or will Rockstar describe a separate product or requirement?
- How are updates and optional purchases handled?
Until Rockstar publishes those answers, articles claiming a confirmed GTA VI Online player count, battle-pass model, monetization plan or launch-day mode list are speculation. The absence of a specification is itself the key buying fact.
The practical verdict
Choose Warzone when you want a free, immediately available squad shooter built around Battle Royale and Resurgence. Buy Black Ops 7 when you also want paid Multiplayer, Zombies and cooperative content with XP that Activision says carries across its listed modes. Choose GTA VI for the announced premium open-world release on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, but do not buy it on the assumption that an online service will have any particular size, mode list or progression system until Rockstar confirms those details.
