For most GTA 6 players, the assault rifle is the safer all-round pick. It should suit medium-range fights, open sightlines and situations in which you do not know what the next encounter will look like. Choose an SMG when you expect close-quarters pressure, need faster movement through confined spaces or prefer an aggressive run-and-gun style.
That is a role-based recommendation, not a claim about final damage, recoil, range, magazine capacity or fire-rate numbers. Rockstar has not published a complete GTA VI weapon-stat table. The game is officially listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026, so the balance can still change before launch.

The short answer: assault rifle for flexibility, SMG for close range
An assault rifle is the better default if you want one class that can handle varied missions. Medium-distance targets, streets, parking lots and longer sightlines all favor the rifle’s conventional role. It is also the easier recommendation when a mission’s encounter design is unknown.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn SMG is the specialist option. It makes more sense when combat is likely to happen indoors, around vehicles, in alleys or at any distance where quickly placing several rounds matters more than preserving accuracy across a long sightline.

The class descriptions in that table are expectations based on how assault rifles and SMGs are normally designed in action games. They are not published Rockstar statistics. Treat them as a decision framework until launch testing establishes the actual values.
What has actually been shown about GTA 6 weapons
Released GTA VI trailers and screenshots have shown weapons that fit both categories. PC Gamer’s review of that material identified an AK-47-inspired assault rifle and an MP5-style SMG. Those descriptions refer to their visual resemblance, not confirmed in-game names.
Rockstar has not published a complete official weapon list or a final comparison of rifle and SMG damage, recoil, range, magazine size or fire rate. That means any article or video presenting exact numbers before launch is either relying on unofficial observation, an unreleased build, or speculation. The safest way to compare the classes now is by intended role rather than by invented statistics.
Do not assume the visual references will become the weapons’ final names. Rockstar may use fictional naming, alter models or rebalance either class before release. The useful conclusion is that both an assault-rifle role and an SMG role have appeared in promotional material, not that a particular real-world model is confirmed.
When an assault rifle is the better choice
Medium-range street fights
Open roads, parking areas and broad city blocks create distance between you and hostile NPCs. An assault rifle’s conventional role is to remain useful as that distance grows. You can keep opponents under pressure without first forcing yourself into the shortest possible range.
This matters in a mission where cover is spread out. If the next target is behind a car, across an intersection or on a balcony, a rifle gives you a more natural starting point than a weapon intended for compact engagements. You still need to use cover and avoid exposing yourself, but you are less dependent on reaching the target before the weapon becomes effective.

Unknown mission layouts
Some encounters begin outdoors and move indoors, or reverse that order. A rifle is the more forgiving choice when you cannot predict the sequence. It can serve in a corridor or room, while an SMG can become less comfortable when the fight suddenly opens into a long lane.
Recommended Free Tools
That flexibility is why the assault rifle is the general recommendation. It does not mean every rifle will outperform every SMG in every situation. It means the rifle class is less specialized when the mission’s distances are mixed.
Controlled, sustained fire
Assault rifles are normally associated with deliberate fire rather than constant sprinting and spraying. In practice, that suggests a rhythm of moving to cover, exposing yourself briefly, firing a controlled string and returning to safety. The exact recoil behavior in GTA VI is not confirmed, so do not translate this into a promised accuracy value.
If you naturally pause to line up shots instead of charging every target, the rifle’s expected role should fit your habits. The benefit is consistency across several distances, not a guaranteed numerical advantage.
When an SMG is the better choice
Indoor and confined encounters
Rooms, stairwells, narrow alleys and vehicle interiors leave little time or space to create distance. An SMG is designed around this kind of fight: targets appear quickly, movement is frequent and engagements are decided before a long sightline develops.

In these spaces, the weapon’s compact role can make rapid target transitions feel more natural. You can clear a sequence of nearby angles without treating every doorway as a long-range marksmanship problem. Final GTA VI handling and damage remain unconfirmed, so this is a class-based expectation rather than a promise about a specific model.

Aggressive movement
Players who push forward, circle enemies or fight while constantly changing position may prefer an SMG. Its expected advantage is maneuverability at close range, where keeping your weapon ready while moving can matter more than preserving precision over distance.
This approach has a clear cost: closing distance exposes you to more threats. An SMG does not remove the need to use cover, check corners or manage incoming fire. It simply supports a style that solves encounters by getting close quickly.
Vehicle and pursuit scenarios
Chases and fights around cars often create short, broken sightlines. Targets can appear beside a vehicle, disappear behind cover and reappear a few steps away. An SMG’s close-range role is a sensible fit for that pattern, provided you can keep the engagement compact.
If the pursuit turns into a long road or a distant exchange, the rifle becomes the safer option. The decision should follow the space you expect to occupy, not a belief that one class is universally stronger.
Choose by encounter type, not by a single “best gun”
Open-world travel and unexpected trouble
When you are moving through Vice City without a specific plan, you cannot know whether the next fight will start in a street, a yard, a shop or a parking structure. Pick the assault rifle if you want the broadest coverage and do not want to change your weapon as soon as the environment changes.
Interior assault
For a mission built around buildings, back rooms or tight corridors, start with the SMG if the game gives you access to both classes. Keep your movement disciplined: clear the nearest angle, use cover at doorways and avoid sprinting past an uncleared corner simply because the weapon feels quick.

Long approaches and exposed crossings
When the objective requires crossing open ground or engaging enemies from one side of a street to the other, favor the assault rifle. Its expected medium-range role gives you a better starting position while you identify where threats are coming from.
Mixed missions
Mixed missions are the strongest argument for the rifle. If the first phase is outdoors and the final phase is indoors, the general-purpose class reduces the number of situations in which your weapon feels mismatched. Switch to an SMG only when the close-range phase is the dominant part of the mission or when the game’s final stats show a clear reason to do so.
Close-range specialists
If you deliberately build your play around rapid entries, short sightlines and aggressive pushes, the SMG can be the better personal choice even when a rifle would be more flexible on paper. A weapon that matches your movement and decision-making is more useful than a theoretically broader class you handle poorly.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist before selecting a class:
- How far away are most targets? Medium or open distances point toward the assault rifle; compact rooms and short lanes point toward the SMG.
- Can you predict the next encounter? If not, the rifle is the safer default because its role is less specialized.
- Will you hold cover or push forward? Deliberate firing from cover favors the rifle’s expected role; rapid movement through tight spaces favors the SMG.
- How much space does the mission provide? Broad streets and long sightlines favor the rifle; stairwells, alleys and interiors favor the SMG.
- Can you change weapons during the mission? If switching is easy, start with the class that matches the first major encounter. If it is difficult or unavailable, prioritize flexibility and choose the rifle.
- What does the final build actually show? Once reliable launch testing exists, use measured recoil, damage, range and reload behavior rather than pre-release assumptions.
How to use either class effectively
Build around cover
Weapon class cannot compensate for standing in the open. Use cars, walls, corners and other available cover to control how much of the enemy force can see you. The rifle’s expected range advantage is wasted if you expose yourself to several angles at once, and the SMG’s close-range strengths are wasted if you charge without a protected route.
Control the distance
Rifle users should preserve the spacing that makes their weapon comfortable. Do not rush into every room if you can hold a doorway or retreat to a wider angle. SMG users should do the opposite: close distance deliberately, use cover to approach and avoid remaining in a long lane where the class is expected to be less comfortable.

Use short, deliberate firing windows when the target is partially exposed. If a target disappears behind cover, stop firing and reposition rather than spending ammunition on a hidden opponent. The final GTA VI firing model is unknown, but this habit remains useful regardless of which class receives the better launch statistics.

Reassess after the first encounter
Do not treat your initial selection as permanent. If the mission repeatedly places enemies farther away than expected, switch toward the rifle when the game allows it. If every fight has become a series of rooms and vehicles at close range, an SMG may be the more efficient choice. The correct weapon is the one that fits the encounter pattern you are actually seeing.
What not to assume from trailers and screenshots
- A rifle that resembles an AK-47 is not necessarily named “AK-47” in the game.
- An SMG that resembles an MP5 is not necessarily named “MP5” in the game.
- A weapon’s appearance does not reveal its final damage, recoil, fire rate, magazine capacity or effective range.
- Promotional footage may use a development build and may not represent launch balance.
- A single trailer moment cannot establish which class wins every distance or mission type.
These limits are especially important for searches asking for the “best gun in GTA 6.” There may be a best option for a particular distance or mission, but no final numerical winner has been published. Until Rockstar or reliable post-launch testing provides complete data, a role-based recommendation is more honest and more useful than a fabricated tier list.
Release, platforms and physical edition details
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI product page lists Vice City as the setting, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms, and the wording “Coming November 19, 2026.” Those details define the currently announced console release information; they do not establish a PC version or a different launch date.
Rockstar Customer Support states: “The physical version of GTAVI will contain a download code for the digital download.” In practical terms, buyers should read the edition description carefully: a physical package may provide a code rather than a game disc containing the complete install. The statement applies to the physical version described by Rockstar and should not be generalized to editions or regions whose packaging details have not been announced.
Rockstar’s site also exposes a Shop area with official merchandise and a Vice City Collection. Those products are separate from the weapon comparison and do not provide evidence about in-game rifle or SMG performance.
How this comparison should change after launch
At launch, replace class conventions with measurements from the final game. A useful comparison should record:
- Damage by distance and whether damage changes by hit location.
- Recoil behavior during single shots, bursts and sustained fire.
- Time to aim, movement speed while aiming and weapon-swap speed.
- Magazine capacity, reload duration and reserve ammunition rules.
- Accuracy while standing, crouching, moving and firing from cover.
- Availability, purchase or unlock requirements and mission restrictions.
Those tests should identify the build, platform and mode being measured. A balance patch can change the result, so a dated test is more useful than an undated claim that one class is permanently best.

Quick Recap
Final recommendation by player type
- New or undecided players: Start with the assault rifle because it is the more versatile default.
- Players who expect indoor combat: Choose the SMG when most engagements are confined and close.
- Deliberate players who use cover: Favor the assault rifle’s expected medium-range role.
- Aggressive run-and-gun players: Favor the SMG if you can consistently close distance.
- Players choosing before reliable launch data: Use the role-based framework and avoid treating visual weapon identifications as confirmed names or stats.
