GTA 6 at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro? Here’s What We Actually Know

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No—Rockstar has not confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will run at 60 frames per second on PS5 Pro, or that any console version will include a 60-fps mode. The PlayStation Store lists the game as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but gives no frame-rate, resolution, ray-tracing or graphics-mode specifications. GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, so reliable retail performance testing is not available yet.

A 60-fps mode is technically possible. However, current technical analysis points to a difficult CPU workload for a large, simulation-heavy open-world game. A 30-fps launch mode remains plausible, while a 40-fps option for 120-Hz displays may be a more realistic compromise. Do not buy a PS5 Pro specifically for an unconfirmed 60-fps promise.

What Rockstar and Sony have officially confirmed

  • Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026.
  • The announced console platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • The PlayStation Store identifies the PS5 release as PS5 Pro Enhanced.
  • No official listing currently states a 30-fps, 40-fps or 60-fps mode, a resolution target, ray-tracing configuration, VRR support or a PS5 Pro-exclusive performance mode.
  • No PC release date or PC version is confirmed in the available platform information.

Rockstar’s platform information is available at rockstargames.com/VI and Rockstar Support. The U.S. PlayStation Store listing gives the release date and Pro designation: GTA VI Standard Edition.

Sony says compatible PS5 Pro games can combine higher frame rates, ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K output. That is a description of the hardware’s capabilities, not confirmation that GTA VI will use all of them. Sony’s PS5 Pro page is at playstation.com/en-us/ps5/ps5-pro/.

What “PS5 Pro Enhanced” actually means

The badge confirms that Rockstar has designated the game for some form of PS5 Pro support. It does not translate to “60 fps guaranteed.” A Pro enhancement could mean any combination of:

  • higher output resolution or cleaner image reconstruction;
  • better anti-aliasing through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR);
  • more detailed shadows, reflections or lighting;
  • stronger ray-tracing effects;
  • fewer frame-time drops at the same frame-rate target;
  • separate graphics modes or a higher frame-rate target.

Neither the store page nor Sony’s announcement specifies which of these Rockstar will implement. “Enhanced” describes support, not a performance guarantee.

Why 60 fps may be difficult

Every frame has a fixed time budget. A 30-fps mode allows about 33.3 milliseconds to produce each frame; 40 fps allows 25 milliseconds; 60 fps allows only 16.7 milliseconds. Missing that budget produces a dropped frame or uneven frame pacing.

GPU limits

Rendering resolution, lighting, reflections, foliage and effects are primarily GPU workloads. PS5 Pro is substantially stronger here. Sony lists 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory and up to 45% faster rendering than the original PS5, alongside improved ray tracing and PSSR. Those figures come from Sony’s hardware announcement: PlayStation Blog.

CPU limits

Open-world simulation also depends on the CPU: traffic, pedestrians, artificial intelligence, physics, animation, world streaming and gameplay logic all have to run before the image is displayed. PS5 Pro uses an eight-core/16-thread Zen 2 CPU, the same CPU architecture documented for the base PS5. The Pro’s main advantage is its GPU, not a generational CPU replacement. The relevant technical documents are the PS5 Pro specifications and base PS5 specifications.

Digital Foundry analysts, in analysis reported by TechRadar, argue that the Pro’s relatively modest CPU uplift could make a stable 60-fps mode difficult for a game of this scale. That is expert interpretation, not a Rockstar specification or a measured result from the unreleased game. If GTA VI is CPU-limited, lowering resolution alone may not deliver 60 fps.

Could a 40-fps mode be the answer?

Possibly. Forty frames per second fits evenly into a 120-Hz refresh cycle: each frame remains on screen for three refresh intervals. It is noticeably smoother than 30 fps while requiring substantially less processing than 60 fps.

A 40-fps mode would require Rockstar to implement it and deliver consistent frame pacing. It is most useful with a 120-Hz television or monitor. A 60-Hz display cannot present 40 fps with the same even cadence. VRR can make fluctuating output less distracting, but it cannot create performance the hardware and game do not provide. No 40-fps mode has been announced.

What the trailers can—and cannot—prove

Trailers and screenshots show visual direction, assets and effects. They do not establish the final retail resolution, frame rate, graphics settings or whether footage came from a development build. “Captured in-engine” is not the same as verified real-time gameplay running at a specified frame rate on retail hardware.

What GTA V tells us

Rockstar’s current-generation release of GTA V offered three modes: Fidelity targeting 30 fps, Performance targeting 60 fps, and Performance RT targeting 60 fps with ray tracing and upscaled 4K on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Rockstar documents those modes at Rockstar Newswire.

That proves Rockstar has used multiple console modes before. It does not predict GTA VI’s launch settings: the new game has a different engine workload, world simulation and visual target. A future patch cannot be ruled out, but Rockstar has announced no 60-fps patch or performance roadmap.

PS5 versus PS5 Pro for GTA VI

Priority Best fit based on current information
Lowest cost of entry Existing or standard PS5
Guaranteed access to the game Either announced PS5 model
Best chance of higher resolution, ray tracing or image quality PS5 Pro
Guaranteed 60 fps Neither console, until Rockstar confirms it
Best value for this one game Standard PS5 unless Pro details justify the premium
Premium PS5 experience across many games PS5 Pro
Potential 40-fps mode on a 120-Hz display PS5 Pro may be more plausible, but remains unconfirmed

Should you buy a PS5 Pro for GTA VI?

The Pro makes sense if

  • You already want the best image quality and ray-tracing performance available on PlayStation.
  • You own a 4K television and value sharper reconstruction or fewer visual compromises.
  • You play several PS5 Pro-enhanced games, not just GTA VI.
  • You can pay the U.S. launch MSRP of $699.99 without requiring a 60-fps result.

Stick with a standard PS5 if

  • A rumored 60-fps mode is your only reason to upgrade.
  • You use a 60-Hz display and would not benefit from a possible 40-fps/120-Hz option.
  • You are satisfied with the standard console’s image quality.
  • You are not willing to accept a possible 30-fps launch mode.

The game is announced for standard PS5, so PS5 Pro is optional rather than required. The PlayStation Store lists the Standard Edition at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99 in the U.S.; the edition price does not indicate superior frame-rate performance. Check the store’s GTA+ pre-order terms because the listed one-month offer auto-renews unless canceled.

What to check before launch

  1. Look for Rockstar’s official graphics-mode and performance specifications.
  2. Check whether any stated “60 fps” is a target, a cap or a locked frame rate with documented frame-time consistency.
  3. Read independent pre-release or launch testing from outlets that measure frame rates and frame times.
  4. Check launch patches and later performance updates before treating the Pro version as settled.

Until those details appear, the defensible position is simple: PS5 Pro support is official, but 60 fps is not. A 30-fps mode is a plausible technical expectation, and 40 fps could be an attractive Pro option for 120-Hz owners, yet both remain unconfirmed.
