Unity Canceled Its Runtime Fee—But Unity Subscription Prices Are Still Rising

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unity canceled its proposed install-based Runtime Fee on September 12, 2024, before it was charged to any game. That reversal did not freeze licensing costs: Unity raised Pro and Enterprise prices for 2025 and applied another 5% increase from January 12, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, Unity Pro is listed at $2,310 per seat annually when prepaid, or $210 per seat monthly.

The short version

Date What changed
September 12, 2024 Unity canceled the proposed Runtime Fee immediately. Personal’s revenue-and-funding ceiling rose from $100,000 to $200,000.
January 1, 2025 Unity Pro rose 8% to $2,200 per seat annually; Enterprise rose 25%. Changes applied to purchases, upgrades and renewals.
January 12, 2026 Unity applied another 5% increase to Pro and Enterprise. Existing subscribers receive the new price at their next renewal on or after that date.
August 18, 2026 listing Unity Pro is $2,310 per seat annually prepaid, or $210 per seat monthly. Enterprise remains custom-priced.

The accurate conclusion is narrower than “Unity abandoned paid runtime pricing.” Unity abandoned the controversial install-linked fee while continuing to adjust its conventional seat subscriptions.

What the Runtime Fee was supposed to do

Unity proposed charging eligible games according to use of the Unity Runtime after they reached specified revenue and activity conditions. The model would have connected a developer’s bill to distribution and player activity rather than primarily to the number of editor seats.

Developers objected that post-launch costs could become difficult to predict. Install counts are complicated by free-to-play users, demos, bundles, subscriptions, giveaways, piracy and repeated installs, and high activity does not necessarily produce equivalent revenue. Studios also questioned whether licensing economics could be changed after a multi-year project had already started.

Unity says it canceled the policy immediately after consulting customers and the developer community because it was not aligned with customer expectations. The fee was canceled before implementation; Unity states that no game was billed under it and that it would not apply to games made with Unity 6 or earlier versions (Unity’s announcement; pricing updates).

What replaced it

Gaming customers returned to a seat-based subscription model. That makes an editor budget easier to model: the main recurring variable is the number of licensed users and the plan they need, rather than the number of times a game is installed.

Seat pricing is not permanently fixed. Unity said it intends to consider potential price increases annually, and a new price can apply at purchase or renewal. A predictable billing method therefore still carries renewal and vendor-dependence risk.

Current gaming plans and thresholds

Plan When it applies Price signal
Unity Personal Eligible gaming users with total annual revenue and funding up to $200,000 Free
Unity Pro Required above $200,000; may also be purchased voluntarily below that level $2,310 per seat annually prepaid, or $210 monthly
Unity Enterprise Required above $25 million; may also be selected for negotiated requirements Custom pricing; minimum commitments may apply

Thresholds refer to total annual revenue and funding, not game sales alone. Grants, publisher advances, investment and income from multiple products can affect eligibility; teams with unusual structures should confirm the current terms with Unity or legal counsel. Plan details and signup options are on Unity’s products page.

Unity Industry is separate. It targets non-game and non-entertainment applications such as automotive, architecture, engineering and manufacturing, and should not be mixed into a gaming comparison. Unity says qualifying Industry customers with company finances above $1 million require that plan (Unity products).

How the increases affect different teams

Hobbyists and small indies

Eligible users below the $200,000 revenue-and-funding threshold can remain on Personal. Removing the Runtime Fee also removes the risk of an install-based charge under that canceled policy. Crossing the threshold, however, can require a move to a paid Pro seat.

Commercial indie teams

At the listed prepaid Pro price, the editor-only annual cost scales directly with seats:

  • 1 seat: $2,310 per year
  • 5 seats: $11,550 per year
  • 10 seats: $23,100 per year
  • 25 seats: $57,750 per year

These calculations use Unity’s listed US-dollar annual price and exclude taxes, discounts, reseller terms and other Unity services (Unity products). A studio should also count contractors or collaborators who need licensed access, not just full-time employees.

Larger studios and publishers

Enterprise is negotiated, so the 25% 2025 increase and 5% 2026 increase do not translate into one universal current bill. Packages can include support, source access, cloud services and minimum subscription or spending commitments. Review the actual agreement rather than multiplying a public percentage by an assumed price.

Educational institutions and nonprofits

Unity says directly purchased Pro plans, including those held by educational institutions and nonprofits, are subject to the Pro increase. Eligible organizations may instead qualify for a Unity Education Grant License, subject to its criteria and terms (Unity pricing updates).

What existing projects and old Editor versions mean

No existing or new game was subject to the Runtime Fee because it was canceled before implementation. Unity also says users can continue using a current Editor version under the previously agreed terms for as long as they keep using that named version (terms update).

That is not the same as a lifetime price freeze. Subscription changes can apply at purchase or renewal, including for customers using prior Editor Software Terms. Keep these distinctions separate:

  • Editor-term continuity: the terms associated with a named version can remain available while you use that version.
  • Price protection: those terms do not necessarily preserve an old subscription price at every future renewal.
  • Runtime Fee protection: no special grandfathering is required because the fee never applied.

How to budget a Unity renewal

  1. List every person who genuinely needs Pro or Enterprise access, including contractors.
  2. Record each subscription’s renewal date and whether it is monthly or prepaid annually.
  3. Separate editor seats from Unity Cloud, DevOps, AI, support, storage and build charges.
  4. Apply the correct revenue-and-funding threshold to the whole company or relevant entity.
  5. Model the project’s remaining development years, not just the next invoice.
  6. Check regional tax, currency conversion, rounding, discounts and reseller terms before approving a budget.

Related 2026 packaging changes

The editor price is only part of Unity’s value calculation. Unity’s 2026 update says Version Control hosted in Unity’s public cloud is moving to unlimited cloud seats, free monthly cloud storage is increasing from 5 GB to 25 GB per organization, and Build Automation is receiving additional free minutes. Havok Physics for Unity is no longer included with Pro, Enterprise or Industry beginning with Unity 6.3, although support continues for Unity 2022 LTS and Unity 6.0 LTS for the remainder of those LTS periods (Unity pricing updates).

These changes may benefit a team already using Unity’s collaboration and build infrastructure. They have less value for a studio with established Git, continuous-integration, hosting or build-farm systems.

Should a studio switch engines?

There is no universal answer. Compare the cost and risk over the project’s full life.

Staying with Unity is usually more defensible when

  • The project is deep into production and migration would delay launch.
  • The team depends on Unity packages, Asset Store tools, plugins or platform integrations.
  • Existing staff expertise and pipelines are heavily Unity-specific.
  • Mobile, 2D, web or rapid cross-platform iteration matters more than licensing independence.
  • The expected migration, retraining and replacement-tool cost exceeds subscription savings.

Reconsidering Unity is more defensible when

  • The project has not entered production.
  • The studio expects many seats over a long development and support cycle.
  • Future licensing changes are a major business risk.
  • The team needs greater control over source code or its technology stack.
  • The game is technically well suited to another engine.

Include engineering and retraining, asset conversion, build pipelines, platform certification, middleware replacement, hiring, support and long-term upgrades in the comparison. Unreal Engine, Godot, and proprietary or hybrid engines can all be credible alternatives, but current competitor prices and royalties require separate contract checks. “Cheaper license” is not automatically cheaper production.

Bottom line for procurement decisions

Unity removed its most controversial pricing mechanism, not its commercial uncertainty. For an existing project, the avoided migration cost and familiar toolchain may outweigh higher recurring seats. For a new, long-lived or seat-heavy production, model renewal increases, total company funding, add-on services and exit costs before committing. Treat Unity Pro’s $2,310 annual prepaid listing as a current price signal for August 18, 2026—not a guaranteed worldwide total—and obtain a written Enterprise quote when applicable.
