No. Rockstar currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no announced PS4 or Xbox One edition, so backward compatibility cannot make the announced game run on those older consoles. If you own only a PS4 or Xbox One, plan on obtaining a PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S as well as the game.
The direct answer for PS4 and Xbox One owners
Grand Theft Auto VI is not currently announced for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Rockstar’s official product listing names the platforms as “PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X|S,” and Rockstar customer support says, “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” Take-Two’s announcement gives the same platform scope and schedules launch for November 19, 2026.

That means a PS4 or Xbox One cannot use backward compatibility to run the announced release. Backward compatibility normally lets a newer console play software made for an older console. It does not create an older-console version of a game that was never released for that hardware. Because no PS4 or Xbox One edition has been announced, there is no GTA 6 disc or download for those systems to load through their compatibility features.

The practical requirement is therefore straightforward: choose a supported current-generation console before buying the game. A PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S is the hardware named in the current official announcements.

What “backward compatibility” means in this case
Compatibility goes from older software to newer hardware
When a console advertises backward compatibility, the usual direction is an older game running on a newer machine. For example, a platform holder may allow selected games from a previous generation to run on the newer console. The newer hardware supplies the operating environment, licenses and system support needed to launch that older software.
GTA 6 presents the opposite problem for someone with a PS4 or Xbox One. The announced game is being listed for the newer PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series family. An older console cannot gain the required release simply because the newer console can play some older games. There must first be an edition built, certified and distributed for the older machine.
A newer console may still be able to run older games
This does not mean a PS5 or Xbox Series console loses access to every previous-generation title. It means that the compatibility direction matters. A newer console playing an older game is not evidence that an older console can play a new, current-generation release. For GTA 6, the official platform list is the controlling information.
Compatibility is different from owning the same account
Using the same PlayStation Network or Xbox account on two generations does not automatically transfer every game to both systems. A digital purchase, a disc license and a platform-specific version can have different eligibility rules. Account ownership cannot substitute for an edition that supports the console in front of you.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026. That date and the platform list describe the currently announced launch scope; they are not a promise that additional platforms can never be announced later. Until Rockstar publishes a PS4 or Xbox One edition, however, an older-console purchase is not a supported way to plan for launch.
Why a PS4 or Xbox One version would be a separate release
A game made for one hardware generation cannot be treated as a universal file that every earlier console can open. A separate older-generation edition would need its own development, testing, certification, performance targets, installation package and distribution license. The absence of that edition is the key fact for this question.
Even if an older machine can play other games from the same publisher, those examples do not establish GTA 6 compatibility. Each title has its own supported-platform list. The list Rockstar has published for GTA 6 identifies PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, not the previous generation.
The same distinction applies to physical media. A disc or box produced for PS5 is not a PS4 release merely because both consoles use optical media. Likewise, a product page showing the Xbox Series family does not imply an Xbox One build. Check the platform printed on the product listing and the account or store page before paying.

Choosing the required console
If your current system is a PS4 or Xbox One, the upgrade decision is between the supported console families rather than between an older and newer edition of the game. The official announcements establish platform support, but they do not provide a complete current price comparison. Prices, stock, bundles and regional availability can change before November 19, 2026, so verify those details with a retailer in your country.

Use your existing account preference as a tie-breaker
If you already have a large digital library, friends list or subscription arrangement on one platform, staying within that ecosystem may reduce friction. That preference does not change GTA 6’s hardware requirement: the selected machine still needs to be a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S console.
Do not assume a cheaper older console is a temporary workaround
Buying a PS4 or Xbox One now in the hope that GTA 6 will run through backward compatibility adds a second hardware purchase without solving the stated requirement. An older console can remain useful for its own compatible library, but it is not a confirmed GTA 6 platform.
Physical editions, download codes and account regions
Rockstar says the physical version contains a download code. That changes what a buyer should inspect on the box: physical packaging does not necessarily mean the complete game is present on a disc. You need the supported console, an internet connection suitable for redeeming and downloading the code, and an account that can accept the product in its region.

Rockstar support recommends buying from a retailer in the same country as the platform account to avoid activation problems. A code purchased for one country may not redeem correctly on an account registered elsewhere. Before opening a physical package, check all of the following:
- The package explicitly identifies PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, not PS4 or Xbox One.
- The retailer is located in the same country as the account you will use.
- The code has not been advertised as a different regional edition.
- You have access to the appropriate PlayStation or Xbox account and enough storage space for the download.
The official material does not state a download size, storage requirement, price or retailer inventory level. Treat those as purchase-time checks rather than assumptions based on another edition or another country.

- Identify your current console. Confirm whether it is a PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. The model name matters because the announced platform list separates the current generation from the previous one.
- Select a supported family. For PlayStation, that means PS5. For Xbox, that means Series X or Series S. Do not treat a PS4 or Xbox One listing as an equivalent option.
- Check the game listing before checkout. The product page should identify the supported platform. If a listing only says “Xbox” or uses an unclear bundle title, confirm that it is the Xbox Series version.
- Match the purchase to your account country. For a physical edition containing a download code, follow Rockstar’s recommendation to buy from a retailer in the same country as the platform account.
- Budget for both parts of the change. A PS4 or Xbox One owner needs supported hardware as well as the game. The official announcements do not establish a universal console price, so use the price and stock available in your region.
- Keep the receipt and regional information. If a code fails to redeem, the retailer, country of purchase and platform edition are the first details support will need.
Questions the current announcement does not answer
Will Rockstar announce PS4 or Xbox One support later?
It is possible for a publisher to change a platform plan, but no such change is included in the current official listings. Plan around PS5 and Xbox Series X|S unless Rockstar publishes a specific older-generation announcement. Do not convert speculation, retailer metadata or a social-media rumor into a purchase decision.

No. The November 19, 2026 date is attached to the announced PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release. A date by itself does not add PS4 or Xbox One support.

Can streaming, remote play or a subscription bypass the requirement?
The cited announcements identify supported consoles but do not announce a cloud-streaming edition, a PS4 application, an Xbox One application or a separate PC release. Remote-play arrangements also require a supported host system and should not be treated as a native older-console version. Until Rockstar describes a specific service and supported devices, the confirmed route remains a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S console.
Can I buy the game now for my PS4 or Xbox One and upgrade later?
Do not assume an upgrade entitlement. The available official wording confirms pre-orders for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but it does not state a PS4-to-PS5 or Xbox One-to-Series upgrade program. Buy only an edition whose platform and upgrade terms are clearly stated at the time of purchase.
What to monitor before launch
Platform plans can be updated, so recheck Rockstar’s product page and customer-support listing when you are ready to order. Look for an explicit PS4 or Xbox One product entry, not merely a retailer category or a backward-compatibility label. Also verify the final release date, edition name, regional code terms, price and stock in your country.
If the official list remains “PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X|S,” the answer remains unchanged: GTA 6 is not a backward-compatible PS4 or Xbox One game. Those consoles can continue to serve their existing libraries, but playing the announced Grand Theft Auto VI release requires one of the supported current-generation systems.
