The safest way to compare the games is to separate what Rockstar has confirmed from what a trailer merely demonstrates. GTA 5 can be assessed from the finished game and its long-running online service. GTA 6 can currently be assessed from its announced characters, setting, release information and trailer footage, not from fan maps, leaks or assumed systems.

Map and setting: Vice City is part of Leonida, not the whole map
GTA 5’s established world
GTA 5 takes place in Los Santos and Blaine County, both within Southern San Andreas. Los Santos supplies the dense metropolitan environment, while Blaine County adds smaller communities, open countryside, desert terrain and wilderness. The contrast supports the game’s three-protagonist structure: missions can move from urban heists to rural crime without leaving the same state.

GTA 6 returns to Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional version of Miami, but the official setting is the larger state of Leonida. Rockstar describes a world extending beyond the city, so Vice City should be understood as the urban center rather than the complete playable map. The confirmed comparison is therefore Los Santos plus Blaine County versus Vice City plus other Leonida regions.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger?
In geographic scope, GTA 6 is presented as a state-wide setting with multiple regions, whereas GTA 5 is framed around Los Santos and Blaine County. That indicates a broader setting concept, but Rockstar has not published acreage, an official side-by-side scale measurement or a travel-distance comparison. It is not accurate to assign a percentage increase or declare a precise physical size from trailer shots alone.
The larger setting matters because it can support more than a single-city crime loop: the trailers show travel between different kinds of places, and Rockstar’s description explicitly places the central conspiracy across Leonida. The exact boundaries, settlement list, road network and activity density remain matters for the finished game.
Characters and story: three switchable leads become a two-person partnership
How GTA 5 uses its protagonists
Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips represent different criminal backgrounds and social positions. The campaign interlocks their plots and lets the player switch between them during much of the story. Heists are designed around complementary roles, and switching characters can change the viewpoint of a mission or open a different route through Los Santos.

Jason and Lucia in GTA 6
GTA 6 follows Jason and Lucia, whose relationship is central to the announced premise. Rockstar’s store synopsis says that an easy score goes wrong, placing the pair on “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America” and inside a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. They must rely on each other to survive.

This is a structural change rather than a minor cast adjustment. GTA 5’s campaign is organized around a trio whose perspectives can diverge; GTA 6 is presented as a partnership in which trust, joint schemes and the consequences of a shared job drive the narrative. Rockstar has not described every character-switching rule, whether both characters are always available, or how missions divide control between them.
Gameplay: what the trailers actually establish
Activities shown for GTA 6
Rockstar’s second trailer shows in-game driving, shooting, robberies, nightlife and travel through Leonida. It also uses social-media-style footage as part of the game’s presentation, reinforcing a contemporary Florida-inspired setting. These are direct examples of activities or presentation styles Rockstar chose to show; they are not a complete list of every system in the final release.
Rockstar states that Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5 and consists of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes. That makes the footage useful evidence of the visual target and selected interactions, while still leaving many questions about how often those activities occur, how freely they can be combined and which mechanics are available outside missions.

What you should not treat as confirmed
- There is no official GTA 6 map acreage or percentage comparison with GTA 5.
- Rockstar has not confirmed artificial-intelligence behavior, a particular inventory model or detailed police, economy and property systems.
- Trailer-frame interpretations, fan-made maps and leaks are not substitutes for an official feature announcement.
- A mechanic appearing briefly in a cutscene or montage should not automatically be treated as a repeatable free-roam activity.
Online features: GTA Online is the benchmark, not a promise about GTA 6
What GTA Online currently offers
GTA Online is a released, evolving multiplayer universe for up to 30 players. Rockstar describes solo play and playing with friends, along with businesses, missions, creator tools and gameplay upgrades and content added since launch. Its long update history means players can choose from established progression loops rather than waiting for a new service to be defined.

The service is also a useful benchmark for the scale of expectation surrounding GTA 6. Players know that GTA 5’s online mode includes public and private ways to play, income-generating businesses, user-created activities and a large catalog of missions. Those are properties of GTA Online, not evidence that a successor will launch with identical systems.
What Rockstar has not announced for GTA 6 Online
The official materials cited for GTA 6 do not specify an online mode’s existence at launch, player limit, progression model, cross-generation transfer, cross-platform support or feature set. They also do not establish whether GTA 6 Online would replace, connect to or coexist with GTA Online. Any claim assigning a player count or promising an account transfer goes beyond the confirmed information.
That uncertainty affects buying decisions. If multiplayer is your priority, GTA Online is the known product with documented functionality. If you are interested in the new setting and Jason-and-Lucia campaign, GTA 6 is the announced future release; its online plans require a later Rockstar announcement.
Release date, consoles and PC questions
GTA 6 platforms and date
Rockstar lists GTA 6 for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those are the confirmed launch platforms in the cited official listing. A PC release date is not included in that announcement, so a PC launch window should not be presented as confirmed.

GTA 5 availability
GTA 5 is already available on current consoles and on the PC editions listed by Rockstar. Its campaign and GTA Online can therefore be played now, with the online service’s existing content available rather than promised for a future launch.
Why the platform distinction matters
Players deciding whether to upgrade hardware should distinguish confirmed compatibility from speculation. GTA 6’s listed versions target PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; the announcement does not list older console generations. Do not assume a last-generation version, a simultaneous PC edition or a transfer path from GTA Online without a Rockstar statement.

Choose GTA 5 Online now if you want a known multiplayer game
- You want to play immediately rather than wait until November 19, 2026.
- You value a mature service with up to 30 players, solo or cooperative options, businesses, creator tools and years of missions and updates.
- You are comfortable treating GTA 6 Online as an unanswered question instead of planning around an assumed feature list.
Wait for GTA 6 if your priority is the new campaign and setting
- You specifically want Vice City and the wider Leonida setting.
- You prefer the Jason-and-Lucia partnership to GTA 5’s three-character structure.
- You are buying for the new story and can wait for confirmed details about online play and other systems.
Use both without assuming continuity
Playing GTA Online now does not establish that characters, money, properties, progression or purchases will carry into GTA 6. Rockstar has not announced a transfer policy. Treat the two games as separate products until an official account or progression relationship is published.
How to read future GTA 6 announcements
Rockstar’s wording will matter as new information arrives. “Confirmed” should be reserved for an official store page, platform listing or Rockstar announcement. “Shown in trailers” describes visible scenes such as driving, shooting, robberies, nightlife and travel, without implying that every surrounding system has been explained. “Not announced” is the accurate status for GTA 6 Online specifications, PC timing and other details absent from the official materials.

This distinction prevents two common errors: treating a cinematic sequence as a complete feature demonstration and treating GTA Online’s mature feature set as a guarantee about its successor. Until Rockstar publishes more, the reliable comparison is the one in the table above: GTA 5 is a finished, three-protagonist Los Santos game with a documented 30-player online service; GTA 6 is an upcoming Jason-and-Lucia story in Leonida with selected gameplay shown and multiplayer details still open.
Sales context
Take-Two Interactive reported more than 190 million units sold for Grand Theft Auto V in 2023. That figure describes GTA 5’s established commercial reach; there is no comparable GTA 6 sales figure before launch.
Bottom line
GTA 6 changes the formula in three confirmed ways: it moves from Los Santos and Blaine County to a Leonida-wide setting centered on Vice City, replaces GTA 5’s trio of playable criminals with Jason and Lucia, and presents a new campaign built around their shared conspiracy. Trailers show a modernized world with driving, shooting, robberies, nightlife and travel, but they do not constitute a full mechanics specification. GTA Online remains the known 30-player multiplayer option, while GTA 6’s online mode, PC availability and progression relationship with GTA Online await official announcements.
