In the United States and Canada, the ESRB rates it M (Mature 17+) and lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases. Parents should treat that rating as a firm warning that the game is designed for adults, not as a borderline recommendation for younger teenagers.
The official listings currently identify PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, with a release date of November 19, 2026. An M rating is intended for players 17 and older in the ESRB system used in the United States and Canada. It is not a statement that every 17-year-old will find the game appropriate, nor does it mean that every listed element appears constantly. It means the board found content significant enough to disclose to consumers and assigned the game to an adult-oriented category.
| Item | What the current official listing says | What parents should do with that information |
|---|---|---|
| Age rating | M (Mature 17+), ESRB | Use the rating as an adult-content warning, not as a casual suggestion for younger players. |
| Content descriptors | Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Mature Humor; Nudity; Strong Language; Strong Sexual Content; Use of Drugs and Alcohol | Decide whether each category fits your family rules before purchase. |
| Spending | In-Game Purchases are disclosed | Review payment methods, purchase approvals, and spending limits. |
| Listed consoles | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S | Confirm the child owns one of these consoles and will use the intended account. |
| Release date | November 19, 2026 | Recheck the store page near purchase because release and storefront information can change. |
The official pages currently do not list a launch edition for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, or PC. That is a statement about the editions currently announced, not a guarantee that no other version will ever be released.
Ratings outside the United States and Canada use different systems and may display different labels or descriptors. If your family is elsewhere, read the rating shown in your region’s store rather than converting the ESRB symbol directly.
What every content descriptor means for a family decision
PlayStation explains that content descriptors identify elements that may have triggered a rating or may be of interest or concern to players and parents. The descriptors are therefore a screening tool. They are not a scene-by-scene index, a count of occurrences, or a reliable measure of how long a particular element appears.
Blood and Gore
This descriptor signals graphic injury imagery or visible blood. It does not tell you the exact scenes, camera treatment, frequency, or level of realism. If your family avoids games that depict bloody injuries, this category alone may be disqualifying. If you are considering the game for an older teenager, discuss whether fictional presentation changes your household rule; do not assume that a cartoonish or stylized treatment, if any, would remove the concern.
Intense Violence
Intense Violence indicates that violent acts are a substantial part of the rating decision. The descriptor does not establish a complete list of weapons, targets, missions, or consequences. Parents should avoid treating an M-rated crime game as a title in which violence is occasional background material. The safer assumption is that violent action is central enough to warrant the strongest ESRB violence wording.

- Play as Dani Rojas, a local Yaran, as you fight alongside a modern-day guerrilla revolution to liberate Yara
- Fight against Castillo’s regime in the most expansive Far Cry to date, through jungles, beaches, and Esperanza, the capital city of Yara
- Employ an arsenal of resolver weapons, backpacks, and vehicles to take down Castillo’s ruthless regime.
Nudity
Nudity means the rating board identified nudity somewhere in the game. The descriptor does not specify which characters are involved, how long imagery remains on screen, whether it is optional, or whether it occurs in story scenes, exploration, or other contexts. A family rule that prohibits any nudity should treat this as a direct conflict rather than waiting for a more detailed description.

Strong Sexual Content
Strong Sexual Content is separate from the Nudity descriptor and indicates that sexual material was significant to the rating. The rating record does not provide a scene list or explain whether content is interactive, implied, optional, or unavoidable. Parents who permit mature violence but not explicit sexual material should evaluate this category independently instead of assuming the game’s other content determines the answer.
Strong Language
Strong Language warns that profanity is present at a level the ESRB considers substantial. The listing does not identify particular words, frequency, speakers, or whether language can be filtered. If your household has language restrictions, set that rule before purchase and do not rely on a teenager to discover the boundaries while playing.
Mature Humor
Mature Humor covers jokes or comedic situations intended for adults. The label does not describe the topics, timing, or tone of the humor. It can be relevant even in a household that is comfortable with action-game violence because humor may frame sexual, criminal, substance-related, or otherwise adult situations in ways a parent does not want a younger player to encounter.
Use of Drugs and Alcohol
This descriptor means drug and alcohol use appears in the game. It does not establish whether use is portrayed positively, negatively, realistically, comically, or as part of optional activity. Parents should decide whether any depiction conflicts with family, cultural, medical, or recovery-related boundaries.

In-Game Purchases
The purchase disclosure means the game or its connected services may offer transactions using the platform account. The rating record does not state the exact items, prices, timing, or whether purchases are cosmetic, functional, single-player, or online-related. Treat the disclosure as a reason to secure the account before the game is installed, not as proof of a particular monetization model.

What the rating does not tell you
Official rating and store records establish the categories above, but they do not provide several details parents often want. They do not constitute a scene-by-scene content index, a complete description of online interactions, or a reliable estimate of playtime. They also do not tell you how frequently a descriptor appears, whether a particular scene can be skipped, or whether every mode contains the same material.
Do not present those unknowns as facts. If your decision depends on a specific trigger—such as sexual violence, gambling, a particular type of drug depiction, or contact with strangers—wait for a suitable primary source or an age-appropriate review that documents that exact issue. Until then, make the decision from the confirmed M rating and its full descriptor list, not from assumptions about what may or may not be present.
A parent’s pre-purchase checklist
Use this sequence before spending money or handing the game to a child. It is designed to prevent the common mistake of checking only the title and age symbol.
- Read the complete rating panel. Confirm the M 17+ symbol and every descriptor on the store page or package. Do not rely on a search result, a trailer, or a friend’s description.
- Match each descriptor to a household rule. Consider violence, blood, nudity, sexual content, language, mature humor, and drug or alcohol use separately. A child who is allowed one category may still be restricted from another.
- Confirm the platform. The currently listed editions are for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Check the exact console model before buying a code or disc, and do not assume a PS4, Xbox One, Switch, or PC copy is available at launch.
- Check the account owner. Make sure the child is using a supervised family account with the correct age information. An adult account can bypass restrictions that would apply to a child account.
- Secure spending. Remove an unnecessary stored payment method, require a password or adult approval for purchases, and set any available spending limit. Verify the setting from the child’s account, not only from the parent’s profile.
- Review communication and online permissions. Use the console’s family controls to limit messaging, voice chat, friend requests, and access to online features when those options are available. Choose the strictest setting that fits your family rather than enabling every feature by default.
- Check connectivity and account requirements. Xbox notes that some features may require internet access, a Rockstar account, age-dependent registration, fees, or later changes. Read the current platform notice and decide whether your child may create or use the required account.
- Plan supervision. Decide where and when the game may be played, whether headphones are allowed, and how a child should report upsetting content or unwanted contact. Make the rule before installation so the first session does not set an accidental precedent.
- Recheck immediately before purchase. Release information, edition names, store conditions, and account requirements can change. Read the current rating and platform page on the day you buy.
Using the console’s family and parental controls
Both major platforms provide family-safety settings, although menu names and available options can change with system software updates. The relevant controls are age-rated game access, purchase approval, communication permissions, and online access. ESRB also notes that devices children use generally include parental controls and provides setup guidance.
PlayStation 5
On PS5, begin in the console’s Settings area and open the family or parental-controls section for the child account. Review the age level for games, spending authorization, communication permissions, and web or online restrictions that your console offers. Test the restrictions by signing into the child profile; a setting applied only to the adult profile does not protect the child account.
The PlayStation listing identifies offline play for the PS5 edition. Offline availability can reduce dependence on a network connection, but it does not change the M rating, remove the listed content, or eliminate the need to control purchases and account access.

Xbox Series X|S
On Xbox, use the family settings associated with the child’s Microsoft account. Check game-content age limits, purchase approval, communication and multiplayer permissions, and screen-time rules where available. Confirm that the child cannot switch to an unrestricted adult account to avoid the limits.

A simple “which game is safer?” question is usually too broad. Compare both titles on the same axes and record the actual rating information for each one.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Age rating and descriptor severity | What rating applies in your region, and which descriptors appear? Are they mild wording or the strongest wording used by that rating board? |
| Violence | Is violence occasional or central? Are blood and graphic injury specifically disclosed? |
| Sexual content and nudity | Are either category listed, and does your household permit them? |
| Language and humor | Does the rating identify strong language or mature humor, and are those categories acceptable at home? |
| Drug and alcohol depiction | Are substances listed, and does the game’s intended audience conflict with your family rules? |
| Spending and account requirements | Are in-game purchases disclosed? Is an account, internet connection, age registration, or fee required for any feature? |
| Parental-control coverage | Can you restrict the game’s age level, purchases, communications, and online access on the platform your child uses? |
This method prevents a lower-sounding marketing label from masking a descriptor that matters more to your family. It also keeps platform and spending risks in the same decision as content concerns.
Questions to settle with your teenager
For an older teenager who may be near the rating threshold, a short conversation is more useful than a vague warning. Explain that the M symbol is an adult-content classification, then ask the child to describe what they expect from the game and how they would respond to uncomfortable material.
- Which of the listed categories is most concerning to you or to us?
- What will you do if a scene is upsetting, sexual, violent, or connected to substance use?
- What is the rule for buying virtual items, and who must approve a purchase?
- What information may you share through a game account or voice chat?
- What should you do if another player pressures you to spend money or communicate privately?
Agree on a stop-and-check rule: the child pauses the game and asks an adult rather than hiding a problem or accepting a prompt to bypass a restriction. This conversation does not make an M-rated game suitable for a younger child; it gives an older teen and parent a clear process for handling the risks the rating identifies.

When the right answer is not to buy
Do not buy the game if the child is below your family’s age boundary, if any listed descriptor violates a non-negotiable household rule, or if you cannot secure the account and payment settings. A child’s insistence, the popularity of the franchise, and the fact that friends own it do not change the rating.
Waiting is also reasonable when you need more information about a specific concern. The official records do not yet establish a complete online-interaction description or scene-by-scene guide. Families that need those details should wait for reliable primary information rather than filling the gaps with rumor.
When a purchase may fit an older player
An older player may be within the ESRB age category and still need boundaries. Before purchase, verify the platform, set family controls, secure payment approval, and discuss communication and account rules. Keep the rating visible when deciding whether a particular mode, session, or shared living-room setting is appropriate.
Revisit the decision if the game’s store page changes, a new edition appears, or the platform adds account requirements. The rating is a starting point for supervision, not a substitute for knowing how your child uses the console.
Bottom line for parents
GTA 6 should be treated as an adults-only game in a family purchase decision: the ESRB lists M 17+ with blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and in-game purchases. Confirm that your child meets your household’s age and content standards, use the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S family controls to restrict access and spending, and check the current platform and account requirements immediately before buying.
