Mature 17+ is not Adults Only 18+
ESRB’s guide treats Mature 17+ and Adults Only 18+ as separate categories. M identifies content intended for players aged 17 and older, while AO is reserved for content suitable only for adults 18 and up. Calling an M-rated game “Adults Only” changes the classification and is not supported by the US record.

Is GTA 6 rated 18 in every major market?
There is no confirmed worldwide AO classification. Ratings are issued independently by national or regional boards, and an age label that looks like “18” in one system is not automatically equivalent to ESRB AO. Each board can use different thresholds, terminology, descriptors and enforcement practices.
What is established by jurisdiction?
| Board or jurisdiction | Confirmed status for GTA 6 | How to interpret it | Enforcement context |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESRB (United States) | M for Mature 17+ | Separate from AO 18+ | Retailer and platform policies may apply; the ESRB listing is the confirmed US classification |
| PEGI (Europe) | Final GTA 6 classification not established here | Do not convert an unverified report into an ESRB-equivalent label | Requirements differ by country and retailer |
| CERO (Japan) | Final GTA 6 classification not established here | Japanese categories use their own standards | Apply the local board’s published rules |
| USK (Germany) | Final GTA 6 classification not established here | USK’s system is distinct from ESRB | German retail and platform controls follow local requirements |
| Australia and other markets | Complete final records not established here | Any reported adult label requires confirmation from the relevant board | Legal and retailer enforcement can vary by market |
Secondary reports may describe adult classifications in individual regions, but they cannot prove that every major market has issued an Adults Only-style decision. Until each board publishes a final record, “worldwide Adults Only” remains an unsupported generalization.

What does the M rating mean for players?
It signals extensive mature content
The descriptors cover violence, gore, sexual content, nudity, strong language, drugs and alcohol, mature humor and in-game purchases. They explain why the game received a mature classification, but they do not change the category from M to AO.
Can teenagers buy GTA 6?
The ESRB’s M category is intended for players 17 and older. Whether a teenager can purchase or access a game depends on the retailer, platform controls and the law in the relevant jurisdiction. The US rating alone does not establish one worldwide purchasing rule, and it is not evidence that every market will treat the game as legally restricted to adults 18 and over.

Which consoles will carry GTA 6?
Rockstar’s official product page identifies Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That page also provides the game’s official launch and pre-order information. Availability, launch details and retailer stock should be checked for the player’s region rather than assumed from a report about another market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the “Adults Only everywhere” headline is misleading
The headline collapses three different questions into one: what the ESRB has decided, what other boards may decide, and how stores enforce age guidance. The first question has a clear answer—M for Mature 17+. The second is incomplete without final records from each board. The third depends on local law, platform settings and retailer policy.
For broader context, the ESRB reported that 65% of ratings assigned to physical and console downloadable video games in 2024 were E or E10+. That is a general ESRB statistic, not a measurement of GTA 6 and not evidence for any particular regional classification.
How to verify a future rating update
- Check the ESRB listing for the US release and confirm whether the category still reads M for Mature 17+ or has changed.
- For another country, identify that market’s official ratings board rather than relying on a headline or an uncited screenshot.
- Confirm that the entry is final, not provisional, and that it applies to the same platform and edition.
- Read the board’s age category, descriptors and enforcement notes independently; do not translate an “18” label directly into ESRB AO.
- Check the local retailer or console storefront for purchase restrictions and regional availability.
Based on the confirmed US record, GTA 6 is a mature-rated game, not an ESRB Adults Only title. A universal 18-plus classification has not been demonstrated.
