Rockstar presents them as paired leads rather than naming one as the sole main character. Jason is a former Army serviceman who later worked for drug runners in the Keys; Lucia fought for her family, served time in Leonida Penitentiary and is determined to build the better life her mother wanted. Their story begins when an easy score collapses into a criminal conspiracy spanning the fictional state of Leonida, leaving them dependent on each other to survive.
This is the clearest account of what Rockstar has officially established. Rumored performers, detailed mission outcomes, gameplay systems and possible endings remain unconfirmed.

Who are Lucia and Jason in GTA 6?
Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Rockstar’s official story description identifies Jason and Lucia as the central pair whose fortunes become linked after a job goes wrong. Both are therefore protagonists; the published material does not establish a hierarchy in which Lucia or Jason is definitively “the” main character.
| Protagonist | Confirmed history | Immediate motivation | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jason Duval | Raised around grifters and crooks; served in the Army; later worked for local drug runners in the Keys | He wants an easier life after years that have kept getting harder | One half of the partnership pulled into Leonida’s criminal conspiracy |
| Lucia Caminos | Taught to fight by her father; went to Leonida Penitentiary while fighting for her family; was released through good fortune | She is pursuing the good life her mother dreamed of after their time in Liberty City | The other half of the partnership, prepared to act decisively to change her circumstances |
Rockstar’s wording makes survival and ambition shared concerns. The pair are not described as temporary acquaintances who happen to appear in the same missions; the official premise says they are forced to rely on each other more than ever if they are to make it out alive.

Jason Duval: what Rockstar has confirmed
A childhood around criminals
Jason’s biography says he grew up around “grifters and crooks.” That establishes an early familiarity with deception and criminal activity, but it does not identify particular relatives, a specific hometown or a complete account of his childhood. Those details have not been supplied in Rockstar’s official biography.
The Army stint
Rockstar explicitly says Jason spent a stint in the Army in an attempt to shake off his troubled teenage years. “Was Jason in the Army?” is therefore one of the questions with a clear answer: yes. The published description does not state his rank, unit, deployment, discharge circumstances or the length of his service, so those details should not be treated as established facts.
Work for drug runners in the Keys
After the Army, Jason worked for local drug runners in the Keys. This is his confirmed direct connection to organized crime before the events described in the game’s premise. It does not, by itself, prove that he leads a particular gang, controls a drug network or has a specified criminal record; Rockstar has not provided those claims in the character biography.

Rockstar summarizes Jason with the line, “Jason wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder.” The sentence supplies his immediate emotional tension: he is seeking less turmoil while repeatedly being drawn into it. Rockstar also publishes two Jason-associated lines: “If anything happens, I’m right behind you” and “Another day in paradise, right?” They suggest a character who remains close to Lucia and uses wry understatement, but the quotes do not establish a complete personality profile or a specific relationship label.
Lucia Caminos: what Rockstar has confirmed
Fighting for her family
Lucia’s biography opens with a precise detail: her father taught her to fight as soon as she could walk. Rockstar then says that fighting for her family led to her imprisonment in Leonida Penitentiary. The official material does not identify the incident, the charge, the length of her sentence or every member of her family involved.
Rank #2
Release and a new ambition
Rockstar says luck got Lucia out of prison. That wording confirms her release without explaining whether it came through a legal decision, a procedural event or another circumstance. Afterward, she wants the good life her mother dreamed of following their days in Liberty City. The reference establishes a family history connected to Liberty City, but it does not provide a full timeline of when Lucia lived there or why the family left.
Taking control of the odds
The official biography characterizes Lucia as prepared to take matters into her own hands and committed to changing the odds in her favor. Her outlook is therefore more deliberate than a simple wish to escape hardship: she intends to act, make plans and use opportunities rather than wait for circumstances to improve.
Rockstar also presents “A life with Jason” as a possible way out for Lucia. That phrase confirms that Jason is part of the future she is considering. It does not formally confirm that they are married, engaged or romantically involved. Her published line, “The only thing that matters is who you know and what you got,” reinforces her practical view of power, connections and resources.
What happens to Jason and Lucia after the score goes wrong?
The official inciting incident
Rockstar’s story copy says Jason and Lucia have always known that the deck is stacked against them. They attempt an easy score, but it goes wrong. The failure places them “on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America” and inside a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida.
That is the confirmed story engine. Rockstar has not identified the job’s target, the person who betrays them, the conspiracy’s leadership or the precise event that turns the score into a statewide crisis. Any detailed account of those points is speculation unless Rockstar publishes more information.

Why they need each other
The same official description says they are forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive. Their partnership is consequently structural, not incidental: each character’s survival and ambitions become interdependent after the failed job. The material does not say that one protagonist serves as the other’s employer, handler or subordinate.

Are Jason and Lucia a couple?
Rockstar has not used a definitive label such as “boyfriend,” “girlfriend,” “partners” in a romantic sense, husband or wife in the confirmed character material. Lucia’s hope for “A life with Jason” and the emphasis on mutual reliance show a close bond, but they do not settle whether the relationship is romantic, platonic, transactional or something that changes during the story. Calling them a couple as a certainty goes beyond what Rockstar has stated.
Vice City, Leonida and the protagonists’ setting
The confirmed setting is Vice City, USA, within the fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar frames Leonida as more than a single urban backdrop: the conspiracy is said to stretch across the state. That gives the protagonists a story environment broader than Vice City itself, while the available character biographies do not yet map Jason’s or Lucia’s complete travel history through the region.
“The darkest side of the sunniest place in America” is Rockstar’s contrast between Leonida’s bright, leisure-oriented image and the criminal danger surrounding the pair. It is promotional story language, not a complete guide to every location or activity in the game.
Lucia versus Jason: the confirmed differences
Their backgrounds and motivations overlap in hardship but point in different directions. The following comparison uses only details Rockstar has attached to the characters.
Rank #4
| Comparison point | Jason Duval | Lucia Caminos |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed history | Grew up around grifters and crooks; served in the Army; worked for Keys drug runners | Learned to fight from her father; fought for her family; served in Leonida Penitentiary; was released through luck |
| Immediate motivation | Wants an easier life as circumstances continue to worsen | Wants the better life her mother dreamed of and plans to improve her odds |
| Connection to crime | Established work for local drug runners before the central story | Officially tied to crime through the incident that put her in prison; later choices are not fully detailed |
| Relationship to the other lead | Presented as someone Lucia may rely on, with the line “If anything happens, I’m right behind you” | Sees “A life with Jason” as a possible way out |
| Narrative position | Both are required to navigate the conspiracy and try to survive its consequences | |
The evidence supports contrast, not a ranking. Jason’s military and criminal-work history does not make him the primary lead, and Lucia’s prison history does not make her a side character.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Lucia the main character?
Not according to the confirmed official framing. Rockstar names Jason and Lucia together, gives each a biography and makes their survival mutually dependent. Lucia may receive substantial attention in trailers or promotional scenes, but prominence in a particular piece of marketing is not proof that she outranks Jason in the finished story.
The safest description is “the two protagonists” or “the paired leads.” Saying “Lucia is the sole main character” or “Jason is only a supporting character” is not supported by the published premise.
What is confirmed, and what remains rumor?
| Topic | Status |
|---|---|
| Names Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos | Confirmed by Rockstar |
| Vice City and Leonida as the setting | Confirmed by Rockstar |
| Jason’s Army stint and work for Keys drug runners | Confirmed by Jason’s official biography |
| Lucia’s family background, imprisonment and release | Confirmed by Lucia’s official biography |
| An easy score that triggers a Leonida-wide criminal conspiracy | Confirmed by Rockstar’s story description |
| Jason and Lucia as a romantic couple | Not formally confirmed |
| Voice or motion-capture performers | Not confirmed in the official material described here |
| Specific missions, gameplay systems, endings or who survives | Not confirmed |
Rumored actor identities should therefore be presented as rumors, not facts. The same caution applies to alleged mission leaks, ending predictions and claims about systems that Rockstar has not officially described.

What Rockstar’s sales figures do—and do not—tell us
Take-Two reported that Rockstar Games had sold in 470 million units worldwide in 2026, compared with 440 million in 2025. Those totals describe Rockstar’s wider catalog, not sales of Grand Theft Auto VI. The reviewed official releases had not published GTA 6 sales, so the figures cannot be used to estimate how many players will meet Jason and Lucia at launch.
