Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are officially announced platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar’s page says “Plays Best On PS5,” but neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has published a head-to-head comparison establishing different resolution, frame rate, or visual quality between consoles. For now, choose based on the console and game library you already use, your preferred services and controller, the exact model and disc-drive configuration, and local pricing—not a presumed GTA 6 performance advantage.
What is confirmed about GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox?
Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two’s announcement gives November 19, 2026 as the announced release date. Because that date is still in the future, check the official pages for changes before buying a console specifically for the game.

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page uses the phrase “Plays Best On PS5.” Its extended-look page says that video was “Captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5.” Those are Rockstar’s own promotional and video-production statements; neither supplies comparative Xbox results or a measured performance advantage.

Is there a proven GTA 6 performance winner?
Not in the published information cited here. The official announcements do not establish GTA VI’s resolution, frame rate, image quality, or other gameplay differences on PS5 versus Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s PS5 wording is not a published benchmark, and footage captured on PS5 does not show how the Xbox version performs.
Console specifications provide hardware context, not a result for this specific game. Microsoft lists a 12 TFLOPS GPU for Xbox Series X; Sony’s manual for the CFI-21XX PS5 model lists 10 TFLOPS. Those manufacturer figures do not establish which version of GTA VI will run better: a game’s performance cannot be determined from these figures alone.

For reference, Microsoft’s current Xbox Series X specifications describe a custom RDNA 2 GPU with 12 TFLOPS and list 1 TB and 2 TB storage options. Sony’s PS5 instruction manual for model CFI-21XX lists a 10 TFLOPS GPU, 8 CPU cores/16 threads, 16 GB GDDR6 memory, and a 1 TB custom SSD; Sony notes that specifications may change and details vary by model.

Start with the games and people you already play with
If you already own one console and have a library, saved progress, subscriptions, or friends there, staying in that ecosystem may be more valuable than switching for a game whose cross-console performance has not been compared publicly. Check the multiplayer arrangements for the games you play with friends rather than assuming every title supports play across console families.

Consider the controller and services you prefer
Think about which controller feels right to you and which platform’s online, social, and subscription features you actually use. Those everyday preferences are known now; GTA VI’s unannounced technical details are not.
Check the exact console model, storage, and disc drive
Compare the specific configurations available in your area, not just the console family name. Microsoft lists Series X storage options of 1 TB and 2 TB, while the cited Sony manual covers a 1 TB CFI-21XX PS5 model. Storage and disc-drive details depend on the exact model. If you want to use physical games or movies, verify that the console you intend to buy includes a disc drive or supports the drive you need.

Compare the full cost where you live

Before choosing, compare local console prices, the game’s local price, and any accessories or services you would need.

What remains unconfirmed?
- PC release: The currently announced platforms are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The official sources cited here do not confirm a PC version or date; that is not proof that a PC release will never happen.
- Physical game edition: Take-Two lists the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store, and global retailers as sales channels, but its announcement does not specify a physical disc edition.
- Console-exclusive content: The reviewed announcements do not establish different gameplay content for PS5 and Xbox.
- Head-to-head technical results: No comparative GTA VI resolution, frame-rate, or image-quality results are published in the official sources cited here.
What to verify before you buy
- Confirm the release date and platforms. Check Rockstar’s current GTA VI page and Take-Two’s announcement for changes to the announced November 19, 2026 date or platform list.
- Compare current local console offers. Check the exact model, included or supported disc drive, storage, and price from retailers in your region.
- Choose the platform that best fits your existing setup. Weigh your library, friends, services, controller preference, and disc needs against the cost of switching.
- Wait for reliable game-specific comparisons if performance is decisive. Look for clearly identified console versions and measured results rather than drawing a conclusion from manufacturer GPU figures or promotional footage.
