The change is real in the examples reported so far, but it is a measured step toward more mission flexibility. It is not a sign that every story mission is open-ended, and Rockstar still plans cinematic sequences for major story moments.
What the criticism actually is
The complaint is a contrast. Rockstar’s open-world games let players do almost anything in free roam, then often switch to tightly scripted story missions where failing a condition, leaving an area, or ignoring a prescribed action ends the attempt. That tension has been a recurring criticism of the studio’s games, though it is a recurring complaint from players and commentators rather than a universal verdict. Notebookcheck’s October 8, 2026 report illustrates it with a single fan comment, which reads:

“It’s the game design of Rockstar wich is a paradox. a paradox in which you get a restrictive game over in the scripted missions if you leave or don’t do what Rockstar wants you to do. on the other hand you have total freedom in free roam, to become whatever you want, to do whatever you want.”
That is one player’s view, not survey evidence of how widespread the feeling is. No reliable figure measures how many players share it. Notebookcheck says the underlying discussion came from an IGN interview, which we have not confirmed against its original text.

The two mission examples Rockstar has given
The reporting points to two specific story missions. Both show flexibility inside a fixed objective, which is different from a mission that lets players pursue a different outcome altogether.
High-rise escape
In this mission, the player has several possible routes out of the building. The objective stays the same: get out. What changes is how the player gets there, which makes the sequence closer to the way players already handle free roam.

Driving escape
In the driving escape, the game suggests a route, but the player can disregard it and still escape the police. The reporting presents this as a chase that can be handled without following the prescribed path, while the mission’s end state remains an escape.
What stays fixed in both examples
Across the two reported examples, the core objective does not change. Players are offered different routes or approaches to reach it. The reporting does not describe alternate mission outcomes, a branching storyline, or missions that can be failed in a new way and carry on differently. Those would be significant changes, and the evidence does not show them.

The stated design goal: story missions that feel like the open world
The design target described in the reporting is for missions to feel like a continuation of the open world rather than a separate, controlled mode. The reporting specifically says that some chases and robberies are meant to work in much the same way in missions as they do in free roam. That is a statement of intent from the developer’s side. It is not something players have verified against the finished game, and it tells us nothing about how many missions use the approach.
Where cinematic control still applies
Freedom has limits. The reporting explicitly says Rockstar may still restrict player choice for major story sequences. This is the central trade-off: the studio wants story missions to feel more open, but it still wants key moments to land as planned. Readers should expect a mix, with some missions offering route choice and some key scenes remaining directed.

Immersion versus convenience
Rockstar’s head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, Rob Nelson, has framed realism as a design choice rather than an absolute. GamesRadar+ quotes him as saying:
“Sometimes you need things to feel realistic to help with that sense of immersion, and conversely, sometimes you need to forego realism in favor of what will be most convenient for the player – realism can help greatly with immersion, but too much can feel tedious, so we try to find the right balance.”

PC Gamer’s October 4, 2026 report quotes the same remark with slightly different wording, so the GamesRadar+ version is the one to cite exactly. The point matters for missions. Stricter realism can make an escape feel more believable, but it can also slow the player down. Giving players a choice of route is one way to reduce that friction without dropping the sense of a real chase.
The story frame: Jason and Lucia
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page places Jason and Lucia at the centre of a criminal story set in Leonida and Vice City. In PC Gamer’s October 4, 2026 report, game writer Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern describes the two protagonists this way: “We wanted both protagonists to be vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other.” EL PAÍS, after an August 2026 preview visit and interview, also describes the dual-protagonist framing and the interactivity of the world.
What is not yet established
- How many missions use route choice. Two examples are reported. Nothing published so far shows how widely the approach is applied across the story.
- Whether any mission changes outcome. The reporting describes flexibility in how an objective is met, not branching results.
- How restrictive the cinematic sequences will be. Rockstar has said major moments may limit choice, but the extent of that limit is not described.
- Platform details. Rockstar’s official page lists PlayStation 5 under “Plays Best On.” Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 announcement named PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Confirm current platform and release information on Rockstar’s official page, since the 2025 launch date from Take-Two’s announcement may no longer apply.
Until the finished game is available to test, the reported examples are the best evidence of Rockstar’s direction. They show a studio trying to make story missions behave more like the open world, while keeping its scripted moments under its control.
