Short answer: Rockstar must usually clear two separate copyrights for a commercial song in Grand Theft Auto VI: the musical composition and the specific sound recording. Those permissions are negotiated for a defined term, territory, platform, edit policy and marketing scope. Rockstar has confirmed a broad radio-and-podcast lineup and a separate 34-track original album, but it has not published the private contracts, fees, owners or renewal dates for individual GTA 6 radio songs.
What Rockstar has actually confirmed about GTA 6 music
Rockstar’s official GTA VI music page describes what it calls the “biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio and podcasts yet.” The announced formats span modern Latin, country, African music, metal, pop and regional rap and hip-hop, alongside station hosts and podcast programming. That confirms the intended breadth of the in-game audio world, not a complete song list or a public account of how each track was licensed.

The same page separately promotes Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a 34-track collection of original music, with digital, vinyl and CD pre-orders. An album sold as a standalone product is a different exploitation of music from a song playing on an in-game station. The album’s 34-track figure should not be treated as the number of licensed radio songs.
Rockstar’s public GTA VI materials identify PlayStation 5 support. They do not disclose the name of every radio-rights holder, the fee for any particular recording, the royalty rate, the territories or platforms in each agreement, or the date on which a license would need renewal. Take-Two Interactive’s 2024 Form 10-K says its content licenses with music labels and musicians are generally limited to particular products and periods. That corporate disclosure supports the existence of time- and product-bounded deals, but it does not reveal GTA VI’s individual terms.

A song in a game involves two different copyrights
A familiar track is not one indivisible legal asset. It normally combines a copyright in the underlying composition—the melody, lyrics and arrangement as protected by the songwriters’ and publishers’ rights—with a copyright in a particular sound recording, commonly called the master. The recording artist or record company may control the master while a publisher or several songwriters control the composition.
The World Intellectual Property Organization’s guidance for game developers describes the two permissions commonly needed for a commercial recording:
- Synchronization (sync) permission: authorization to pair the composition with interactive visual or game content, including the way it is introduced, stopped, looped or otherwise presented.
- Master-use permission: authorization to use the chosen artist’s actual recording rather than a new cover or re-recording.
These rights can sit with different companies or people. A developer may therefore have to reach multiple agreements for one track, and a deal with a record label does not automatically grant the publishing rights held by songwriters or their publishers. Conversely, a composition clearance does not authorize use of a famous artist’s master.

How a GTA 6 radio song is cleared
The following is the standard rights-clearance model documented by WIPO and the U.S. Copyright Office, applied to the type of radio use Rockstar has described. It is an industry explanation, not a leaked Rockstar internal checklist.
- Creative selection. Rockstar’s music team identifies tracks that fit Vice City and Leonida, a station’s format, the game’s pacing and a character or scene. The official page confirms station genres and hosts; it does not describe Rockstar’s internal meetings or selection criteria in detail.
- Rights research. A clearance team verifies the writers, publishers, master owner, performers, administrators and any other party whose consent is required. Metadata, split sheets and chain-of-title documents help establish who can sign.
- Scope negotiation. The parties define where and how the track may be used: game build, platforms, territories, term, edits, station presentation, trailers and other media. A worldwide release requires rights broad enough for every intended territory, or separate territorial deals.
- Separate approvals. Composition and master owners negotiate their portions. Artist, songwriter, publisher or label approvals may be required for edits, context, advertising or use of a name and likeness.
- Delivery and implementation. Once signed, rights holders deliver the approved master, metadata, credits, clean or edited versions and any restrictions. The game team implements fades, station IDs, volume changes and transitions within the permissions.
- Monitoring and renewal. Legal and music teams track expiration dates, territories, platform changes and marketing uses. A track can require a new negotiation if the product, region, media channel or term changes.
What a music license actually buys
A fee is payment for a bundle of defined permissions, not a universal purchase of the song forever. The principal variables are below.
| Contract element | Question it answers | Why it matters in GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Composition rights | May the game synchronize the songwriters’ work with gameplay? | Usually a separate negotiation from the master; several publishers or writers may be involved. |
| Master rights | May the game use this specific artist recording? | Controls the exact version players hear, including featured performers and label-owned recordings. |
| Term | How long may the specified uses continue? | A license can expire after launch, creating replacement or renewal work. |
| Territory | In which countries may the track be distributed? | Global digital distribution requires worldwide coverage or a patchwork of regional permissions. |
| Media and platforms | Does permission cover consoles, PC, trailers, demos, online video or a soundtrack product? | Game-only rights may not cover a trailer, livestream clip, advertisement or album release. |
| Edits and presentation | Can Rockstar fade, loop, censor, shorten or combine the recording with station IDs? | Interactive radio needs playback rules that a normal album release does not. |
| Compensation | Is payment a fixed fee, a royalty, or another participation arrangement? | The amount and structure are negotiated; no GTA VI-specific fee or royalty rate has been published. |
| Approvals, credit and warranties | Who approves context and edits, how are contributors credited, and who promises the rights are clean? | These provisions reduce disputes over ownership, attribution and unauthorized uses. |
Marketing is often a separate cost driver. WIPO identifies trailers, television, online advertising and other promotional uses as factors that can increase the price or require additional permissions. A track cleared for an in-game station is not automatically cleared for every video Rockstar or a platform holder might publish.
Who negotiates when ownership is split?
There is no single “GTA song owner” for every track. The composition may be administered by one publisher while another controls a co-writer’s share. The master may belong to a label, an artist, a producer or a company that acquired the catalog. Featured artists and samples can add further permissions.

The U.S. Copyright Office describes the video-game synchronization market as flexible and negotiated, with music supervisors and intermediaries helping select, negotiate and deliver music. That description explains the type of professional work involved; it does not identify a clearance vendor used by Rockstar.
For a track with several writers or a complex catalog history, every necessary share must be cleared. If one required owner refuses, the developer may negotiate a different scope, use a replacement recording, commission a cover, or drop the song.
Why a song can disappear after launch
Licensing restrictions can outlast a release plan. A game may ship with a valid agreement and later lose a track because the term ends, a country was excluded, a new platform or use falls outside the contract, or renewal is too expensive or impossible. Take-Two’s 2024 filing expressly characterizes music-label and musician licenses as generally limited to specific products and periods.

Rockstar has already documented this pattern. In a customer-support update originally issued in 2018 and updated in 2024, Rockstar explained that “Due to music licensing restrictions, we are required to remove certain songs from the in-game soundtrack” and replace them with a new set of songs. That precedent concerns an earlier GTA title, not a confirmed GTA VI change, but it shows why a radio lineup can differ between an original release and a later installation.
Replacement can involve a title update, a regional variant, or a different station playlist. Players may also encounter differences between an offline disc build and a later digital build if one version was produced before a license expired. The exact treatment depends on the contract and the technical way the publisher distributes updates.

The radio soundtrack is an in-game programming layer: licensed recordings and station material are selected to create a fictional broadcast experience. Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album is a separately promoted 34-track original release with digital, vinyl and CD formats. A song can be written for the album without being a radio track, and a radio recording does not automatically belong on the album.
The distinction also changes the rights package. A physical or digital album requires permissions for reproduction, distribution and the album’s own marketing. Those rights are different from synchronization and master-use permissions for interactive radio. Rockstar’s public announcement does not state that every album track appears in the game, that every radio song appears on the album, or that the two lists are identical.
How much does it cost to license a song?
No reliable public source reviewed for GTA VI gives a per-song fee, total radio budget, royalty percentage or named supplier. It would be misleading to insert an industry estimate and present it as Rockstar’s cost.

In practice, price is shaped by the rights package rather than by the title alone. Negotiators consider the popularity and bargaining position of the artist, the composition and master owners, worldwide versus limited territory, the length of the term, the number of platforms, game-only versus game-plus-marketing use, edit permissions, exclusivity, approval requirements and whether compensation is an upfront fee, royalties or both. A short, regional, game-only license can be materially different from a worldwide, perpetual, cross-media grant.
Because those variables are private, two songs in the same station could have very different economics. The absence of a published number is not evidence that the songs were free or that Rockstar bought ownership of the underlying copyrights.
Can you use GTA 6 radio music in your own video?
Rockstar’s license, if it covers a recording in the game, gives rights to the publisher for the specified uses. It does not grant players a blanket license to extract that music and reuse it in a YouTube video, stream, podcast, trailer or other project. Your use can trigger separate claims because the composition and master remain controlled by their respective owners.
Turning off the station, muting the game, or using a platform’s licensed-music mode can reduce the risk of an automated claim, but none of those steps creates ownership. If you need a track for your own production, obtain permission from the relevant composition and master owners or use music offered under a license that expressly covers your project. The game’s inclusion of a song is not proof that your intended use is cleared.

| Question | What can be stated responsibly |
|---|---|
| Will GTA 6 have licensed radio? | Rockstar confirms an extensive radio and podcast offering across multiple formats. |
| How many radio songs are there? | A complete radio-song total has not been published in the cited official materials. |
| Is the album the radio soundtrack? | No. Rockstar presents a separate 34-track original album; it has not said the lists are identical. |
| Who owns each song? | Ownership varies by composition and master. Rockstar has not published a track-by-track rights ledger. |
| How much did each license cost? | No GTA VI-specific fees or royalty rates have been disclosed. |
| Could songs be removed later? | Yes, in principle, if a term, territory or permitted use ends or cannot be renewed. Rockstar’s earlier GTA support notice documents that outcome. |
| Which platforms are confirmed? | Rockstar’s official GTA VI page identifies PlayStation 5 support; other platform rights and music scopes are not detailed in the cited materials. |
Bottom line for players
Rockstar does not simply “buy a song” for GTA 6. It assembles a negotiated package covering the composition, the master recording and the exact ways the music may be distributed and presented. The agreements can be limited by time, territory, platform and marketing use, which explains why songs have disappeared from earlier GTA radio lineups. For GTA VI, Rockstar has confirmed an unusually broad radio-and-podcast concept and a separate 34-track original album, while keeping the private song contracts and prices confidential.
