GTA VI and Cyberpunk 2077 are both ESRB-rated Mature 17+, and both carry six core content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The meaningful difference is not an officially established “which is more explicit” ranking. It is how much each rating entry tells you about what appears in play.
Cyberpunk 2077’s ESRB summary gives concrete examples, including customizable nudity, optional brief first-person sex scenes, frequent fictional drug references, alcohol-related screen distortion, firearms, explosives, melee attacks and dismemberment. The current GTA VI entry lists descriptors but does not provide comparable scene-level explanations or say which activities are optional. That evidence supports a comparison of disclosure and documented presentation, not a definitive claim that one game contains more mature material overall.

ESRB ratings at a glance
| Game | Rating | Descriptors | Interactive element | Platforms listed | How detailed is the summary? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTA VI | Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Mature Humor; Nudity; Strong Language; Strong Sexual Content; Use of Drugs and Alcohol | In-Game Purchases | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series | Descriptors only in the current entry; no comparable narrative examples |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Nudity; Strong Language; Strong Sexual Content; Use of Drugs and Alcohol | Not listed in the cited ESRB entry | Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series | Detailed examples of violence, sex, nudity, drugs, alcohol and profanity |
GTA VI therefore has two entries that do not appear on Cyberpunk 2077’s list: Mature Humor and In-Game Purchases. A descriptor that is absent from one rating is not proof that the underlying content is absent. The ESRB says its descriptors are not a complete inventory of everything in a game.

What “Mature 17+” actually tells you
The ESRB defines Mature 17+ as generally suitable for people aged 17 and older. Games in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language. The rating is a threshold judgment, not a scene-by-scene catalog.

The ESRB’s guide explains: “Content Descriptors indicate content that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern.” That wording matters in this comparison. A descriptor tells you why a rating may have been triggered or what consumers may want to know; it does not tell you how often a scene occurs, whether it is mandatory, how long it lasts, or how graphic every instance is.
“Strong Sexual Content” means explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity. Even that definition leaves important questions open, such as whether scenes are interactive, skippable, optional or tied to a particular quest. Those details must come from the individual game’s rating summary or other reliable documentation.
How Cyberpunk 2077’s mature content is presented
Cyberpunk 2077’s rating summary describes a first-person RPG/shooter in which the player controls V, a mercenary in Night City. Its examples explain not only which categories are present, but also the forms they can take during play.
Violence, gore and disturbing imagery
The summary identifies firearms, explosives and melee attacks, with some attacks resulting in dismemberment. It also mentions mutilated corpses and a quest scene in which nails are driven through a character’s hands and feet. These examples show a range of presentation: conventional combat, bodily damage that can be visible during fights, and set-piece imagery intended to be disturbing.
Because the game is played from a first-person perspective, the player’s view is positioned close to weapons, targets and environmental scenes. The rating summary establishes that these elements exist; it does not state that every encounter contains dismemberment or that every player must see every described scene.
Customizable nudity
Character customization can depict breasts, buttocks and genitalia. This is a different kind of exposure from a pre-rendered cutscene: the player can encounter nudity while creating or adjusting a character rather than only during a scripted story moment.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSex scenes and player choice
The ESRB describes brief first-person sex scenes and says players have the option to engage in the described sexual activities with certain characters or prostitutes. “Optional” is the key qualification. The scenes are part of the game’s available content, but the summary does not present them as unavoidable steps in the main progression.
That optionality should not be confused with an absence of sexual material. The game still carries Strong Sexual Content and Nudity, and the rating summary explicitly identifies first-person presentation. It simply gives the reader more information about how a player may encounter it.
Drugs and alcohol
The summary refers to frequent fictional drug depictions and references, including an animated billboard showing someone snorting speed. It also describes repeated drinking that distorts the screen and the ability to drive while drunk. These examples cover background advertising, consumable substances and gameplay effects rather than a single isolated mention.
“Frequent” applies to the drug depictions and references in the ESRB’s wording. It does not provide a percentage of play time or a count of scenes. The alcohol examples indicate that drinking can alter the on-screen presentation and that intoxication can be carried into driving.

Strong Language is one of the six descriptors shared by both games. Cyberpunk 2077’s summary specifically mentions profanity but does not quantify its frequency or list individual words. The rating therefore confirms the category without supplying a script-level measure.

What GTA VI’s current official entry establishes
The current GTA VI ESRB entry names Rockstar Games as publisher and lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series as platforms. It assigns Mature 17+ and lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. In-Game Purchases appear as an interactive element.
The descriptor list is broad, but the examples are missing
The entry confirms that the same six core mature-content categories found on Cyberpunk 2077’s listing are relevant to GTA VI’s rating. It additionally identifies mature humor and in-game purchases. However, the current summary does not explain what specific scenes contain, how violence or sexual material is staged, how often mature events occur, or whether particular scenes can be skipped.
That is an information gap, not evidence that GTA VI is milder or harsher. Do not fill it with assumptions drawn from earlier Grand Theft Auto games, trailers or online speculation. The official rating page presently supports the descriptor-level comparison and no more detailed conclusion.
What trailers can and cannot prove
Rockstar’s official media page lists Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look.” The existence of those videos confirms that official promotional material has been released, but it does not by itself verify every mature-content category, scene, frequency or gameplay condition. A trailer is selected marketing footage, whereas an ESRB summary is a rating disclosure.
Release status and platforms
The US PlayStation Store lists a PS5 product with a November 19, 2026 release date. That date was still in the future when the rating and store information were accessed on October 13, 2026, and should be checked again because release listings can change. The current evidence supports describing GTA VI as forthcoming in this time frame, not as a game already available to play.
Side-by-side comparison by content question
| Question | GTA VI | Cyberpunk 2077 | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rating category | Mature 17+ | Mature 17+ | The ESRB places both in the same age category. |
| Blood, gore and violence | Descriptors confirm Blood and Gore and Intense Violence; examples are not provided. | Firearms, explosives, melee attacks, some dismemberment and mutilated corpses are described; one quest involves nails driven through hands and feet. | Cyberpunk 2077 has the more detailed public description, not necessarily more violence. |
| Nudity | Nudity is listed; presentation details are not stated. | Customization can depict breasts, buttocks and genitalia. | Only Cyberpunk 2077’s entry explains how nudity can appear. |
| Sexual content | Strong Sexual Content is listed; optionality and scene format are not stated. | Brief first-person sex scenes with certain characters or prostitutes are described as optional activities. | Cyberpunk 2077’s listing supplies player-choice information that GTA VI’s does not. |
| Drugs and alcohol | Use of Drugs and Alcohol is listed; frequency and effects are not stated. | Frequent fictional drug depictions and references, an animated speed-snorting billboard, screen distortion from repeated drinking and drunk driving are described. | Cyberpunk 2077 has documented examples and a frequency qualifier; GTA VI does not. |
| Language | Strong Language is listed; examples are not stated. | Profanity is mentioned without a frequency count. | Both are confirmed to contain strong language, but neither entry gives a script-wide measurement. |
| Mature humor | Listed as a descriptor. | Not listed in the cited entry. | GTA VI has the descriptor; its absence from Cyberpunk 2077’s list does not prove an absence of adult humor. |
| In-game purchases | Displayed as an interactive element. | Not listed in the cited entry. | The listings disclose different interactive elements. |
Frequency, intensity and player control
Readers often want a single verdict: which game is more graphic, more sexual or easier to restrict? The available official descriptions do not support that ranking. They describe different amounts of detail.

Cyberpunk 2077’s entry uses “frequent” for drug depictions and references and identifies optional sexual activities. It also provides concrete examples of violence, nudity and alcohol effects. Those statements let you anticipate specific forms of content, but they do not measure the total amount of mature material across the whole game.

How to use the comparison when deciding suitability
If you are checking for sexual content
- For Cyberpunk 2077, account for customizable nudity and brief, optional first-person sex scenes.
- For GTA VI, account for Nudity and Strong Sexual Content on the rating, but recognize that the current entry does not explain scenes, duration or optionality.
- Do not treat “optional” as “hidden” or “nonexistent”; it means the player can choose whether to engage in the described Cyberpunk 2077 activities.
If violence and disturbing imagery are the concern
- Cyberpunk 2077’s published examples include dismemberment, mutilated corpses and a particularly disturbing nail-injury quest scene.
- GTA VI is rated for Blood and Gore and Intense Violence, but the current summary does not identify comparable set pieces.
- A shared descriptor establishes a category, not equal intensity or identical visual treatment.
If substances are the concern
- Cyberpunk 2077 includes frequent fictional drug references and depictions, alcohol-related screen distortion and drunk driving.
- GTA VI carries Use of Drugs and Alcohol, but the official entry does not state what substances do, how often they appear or whether use is optional.
If language and tone are the concern
- Both games carry Strong Language.
- GTA VI also carries Mature Humor, while Cyberpunk 2077’s cited entry does not list that descriptor.
- Neither rating entry provides a complete transcript or a numerical count of profane lines.
Why the two entries should not be treated as a complete content inventory
The ESRB cautions that descriptors are not a complete listing of content. A rating page is designed to orient consumers, not to document every mission, conversation, billboard, customization option or random encounter.
This limitation is especially important here because the entries are unevenly written. Cyberpunk 2077 has a narrative summary with examples, while GTA VI’s current entry stops at descriptors and an interactive-element label. Comparing the amount of explanation can reveal what is documented; it cannot reveal the total amount of mature content in either game.
Likewise, the shared Mature 17+ label does not mean that the games stage mature material in the same way. Cyberpunk 2077’s disclosed first-person scenes, customization system and intoxication effects are specific presentation choices. GTA VI’s current rating does not yet provide enough official detail to map its equivalent choices.

Bottom line for readers comparing them
On the evidence currently available, both GTA VI and Cyberpunk 2077 belong to the ESRB’s Mature 17+ category and share six major mature-content descriptors. Cyberpunk 2077 is the more transparent listing: its summary tells you about optional first-person sex scenes, customizable nudity, frequent fictional drug references, alcohol effects, graphic combat and disturbing imagery. GTA VI’s listing adds Mature Humor and In-Game Purchases but does not explain how its violence, sex, nudity, language or substance use appears in play.
That makes Cyberpunk 2077 easier to preview from the rating page, not officially “more explicit.” Until a fuller GTA VI rating summary or other authoritative disclosure is published, any stronger claim would go beyond what the available evidence establishes.
