GTA 4 is the more demonstrably realistic driving game right now. Its heavy inertia, pronounced body roll, suspension movement and demanding braking can be tested in the released game. GTA 6 (officially GTA VI) may eventually offer a better-balanced simulation, but that remains a forecast: Rockstar has described a design that combines GTA 4’s weight with GTA 5’s accessibility, while the trailers show only edited footage rather than repeatable controller gameplay.
That distinction matters. GTA 4 can be judged from hands-on driving; GTA 6 can currently be judged only from Rockstar’s comments and visual evidence. The fairest conclusion before launch is therefore proven realism versus unverified potential, not a definitive victory for the unreleased game.

The short answer: proven realism versus untested potential
GTA 4 has the stronger claim to realistic handling because its physics are available for anyone to test. Cars carry visible momentum, lean through corners, dive under braking and can lose the rear when the driver asks too much of the tires. Those behaviors make the game slower to learn and occasionally awkward, but they provide an observable, repeatable driving model rather than a promise.

GTA 6 is targeting a compromise rather than a simple return to GTA 4. Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson said the team wanted to preserve “some of the best parts of the weightiness and feel of GTA 4” while retaining “the accessibility of GTA 5.” He also said the vehicle model was rebuilt for current hardware, giving the team more control over drivetrain, tires, suspension and steering. That is an explicit design goal, not a published specification or a measured result.

Trailer 2 appears to be in-engine PlayStation 5 footage and shows suspension movement and weight transfer. Because the material is edited, lacks a HUD and contains no uninterrupted controller sequence, it cannot establish how consistently a player can reproduce those effects, how tires behave at the limit or whether damage produces lasting mechanical consequences.
As of the announced November 19, 2026 release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, GTA 6 therefore has the higher ceiling but not a verified handling win.
What “realistic handling” means in a GTA game
Realism in an open-world driving game is not one slider. It is the interaction of several systems, and a game can be convincing in one area while remaining deliberately forgiving in another.

Weight is the sensation that a vehicle resists sudden changes in direction. In a physics model, inertia makes a heavy car take longer to rotate, stop or change lanes. A realistic-feeling car does not instantly point where the camera or stick moves; it takes a moment for the body and tires to respond.
Suspension and body movement
Suspension controls how the body reacts to bumps, acceleration, braking and cornering. Body roll is the lean toward the outside of a turn. Suspension dive is the nose lowering under braking, while squat is the rear lowering under acceleration. These motions communicate load transfer to the player, even when the game does not expose engineering data.
Tire behavior and breakaway
Tires provide the grip that turns steering input into a change of direction. When available grip is exceeded, a car may understeer (the front pushes wide) or oversteer (the rear steps out). A progressive breakaway lets a driver catch a slide; an abrupt one demands quicker corrections. Neither behavior alone proves real-world accuracy, but predictable load-sensitive grip is a major part of believable handling.
Accessibility
Accessibility is not the opposite of quality. Steering assistance, forgiving traction and responsive controls can make a model enjoyable without eliminating weight. The relevant question is whether aids conceal a coherent underlying simulation or replace it with scripted movement. Rockstar’s stated GTA 6 goal is to keep the physical character of GTA 4 while reducing the frustration that made that game divisive.

How GTA 4’s driving model holds up
Released and directly testable
GTA IV launched in 2008 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Its RAGE engine was paired with NaturalMotion’s Euphoria technology, and contemporary descriptions of the driving emphasize weight, inertia, body roll, suspension dive and rear-end breakaway. Whatever one thinks of the tuning, those traits are experienced in a complete, playable product rather than inferred from marketing footage.
The model’s realism is most apparent when a driver changes direction or brakes late. Inputs have consequences over time: a heavy sedan does not pivot like a lightweight arcade car, and a car that has begun to rotate can require counter-steering instead of a simple release of the accelerator. Uneven surfaces and collisions also make the body feel connected to the chassis, which reinforces the impression of mass.
Why players disagree about it
The same qualities that make GTA 4 convincing can make it demanding. Braking distances feel long, steering can seem slow at first, and recovering from a slide is less automatic than in a more accessible arcade model. Different vehicle classes also expose the tuning differently, so a player who prefers nimble sports cars may judge the system more harshly than someone driving sedans or trucks.
That divisiveness does not invalidate the physics. It shows that realism and immediate comfort are separate goals. GTA 4 asks the player to anticipate momentum, which is why its handling remains a useful benchmark for this comparison.
Context that is not a physics score
GTA IV received a 98 out of 100 Metacritic review record from the 2008 era, and CNN reported 3.6 million copies sold on its first day. Those figures establish the game’s critical and commercial impact, not the accuracy of its vehicle simulation. They should not be read as test results for braking, grip or suspension.
What Rockstar has said about GTA 6
Rob Nelson’s statement is the clearest description of the intended balance: “Only in the best way possible. The team has worked hard to maintain some of the best parts of the weightiness and feel of GTA 4, but have the accessibility of GTA 5. It has all been built up from scratch on this hardware, and they have much more control tuning drivetrain, tires, suspension, steering, all of that is getting applied to the physics model.”
Several details are important in that wording:
- “Maintain” does not mean copy. Rockstar is identifying a feel it wants to preserve, not promising identical vehicle parameters.
- “Accessibility” implies retuning. GTA 6 may make steering response, recovery and everyday travel easier without removing weight transfer.
- More control is a development capability. Greater ability to tune drivetrain, tires, suspension and steering says what the team can adjust, not what final values players will receive.
- “Built up from scratch on this hardware” limits direct assumptions. New implementation and current-generation targets can change how systems interact, even if the desired feel references an older game.
Until players can drive the release build, this statement is the best evidence of intent but cannot settle the handling question.

Axis-by-axis comparison
| Axis | GTA 4 | GTA 6 | What can be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight and inertia | Heavy, momentum-led behavior is observable in the released game. | Rockstar says it is preserving elements of GTA 4’s weight; trailers suggest substantial mass. | GTA 4 is proven; GTA 6 is promising but unverified. |
| Suspension, body roll and braking | Body roll, suspension dive and demanding braking are part of the hands-on experience. | Trailer 2 shows suspension movement and weight transfer in edited in-engine footage. | Visual movement is evidence of presentation, not a repeatable handling test. |
| Accessibility and learning curve | More demanding inputs and recovery make the model divisive. | Rockstar explicitly targets GTA 5-level accessibility alongside GTA 4-style weight. | GTA 6 is designed to be easier to approach, but the final balance is unknown. |
| Evidence quality | Anyone can test the complete game on its original console versions. | No uncut controller sequence or public repeatable test has established the final feel. | Confidence is materially higher for GTA 4. |
| Damage and mechanical simulation | The comparison material does not establish a complete specification of persistent systems. | Rockstar has not published a detailed vehicle-damage or physics specification. | Claims about fuel, temperature, persistent failures or handling modes remain unconfirmed for GTA 6. |
Suspension and trailer evidence: what it shows and what it cannot show
Trailer 2’s apparent suspension travel and weight transfer are useful clues. A car that visibly compresses over a crest, settles after a landing or leans during a maneuver is communicating a more physical presentation than a vehicle that stays perfectly flat. The footage also indicates that Rockstar is willing to show body movement as part of the driving experience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHowever, an edited sequence cannot answer the questions a driver needs answered:
- Does the same maneuver produce the same response every time?
- Is the movement generated by tire and suspension forces, animation layered over physics, or a combination?
- How quickly does the car respond to a small analog-stick input?
- Does grip change with speed, steering angle and surface in a predictable way?
- Can a player catch a slide with counter-steering, and is the recovery window forgiving?
Without an uncut controller demonstration or hands-on testing, the trailer establishes visual intent rather than measured simulation performance.
Damage and mechanical realism: the major unknowns
Vehicle physics and vehicle damage are related but not identical. A game can model convincing weight transfer while keeping damage cosmetic, or it can deform panels without changing alignment, steering or braking. Rockstar has not released a detailed GTA 6 specification covering these systems.
As a result, the following claims should be treated as unconfirmed rather than assumed features:
- Persistent mechanical failures after a crash
- Fuel consumption that affects range or performance
- Temperature changes that alter engine or tire behavior
- Wear that accumulates across a vehicle’s use
- Separate handling modes with documented physical differences
- Damage that permanently changes alignment, suspension or drivetrain output
The absence of confirmation is not evidence that these systems are missing. It simply means they cannot be used to declare GTA 6 more realistic than GTA 4 before launch.
Does GTA 6 feel more like GTA 4 or GTA 5?
The announced target sits between them. GTA 4 supplies the reference for mass and inertia; GTA 5 supplies the reference for accessibility. In practical terms, that could mean cars still take time to settle and stop, while steering, traction recovery and routine travel require fewer corrections.
Rank #4
- Improved combat system - Now you can use cover and also a target lock system, which allows you to take out targets with greater ease and accuracy. Plus, you can engage in some hand-to-hand combat if you can't get your hands on a piece quick enough.
- Free time - In between missions you can take advantage of "me" time. There are gentleman's clubs, comedy clubs, bowling alleys, and bars, which all house unique activities.
- Take a break from the storyline - A variety of side missions allow you to help run a car service, "borrow" cop cars, assassinate targets, help solve problems for those on the street, or take to the air with stunt jumps that are scattered all over the city.
- Control your own fate - Throughout the game choice moments will arrive causing you to make a decision that will affect relationships and money
That middle ground would answer the most common player concern: wanting GTA 4’s sense of weight without having every corner become a wrestling match. It would not necessarily satisfy players who want a full simulator, because an open-world action game must support chases, stunts, quick vehicle swaps and a broad audience. Nor would it please players who prefer GTA 5’s immediately responsive feel if Rockstar keeps more momentum than they expect.
The decisive issue is tuning. Two games can include the same categories of physics—drivetrain, tires, suspension and steering—yet feel completely different because of response curves, assists, friction limits and how quickly the model transitions from grip to slide. Rockstar’s quote confirms those systems are receiving attention, but it does not reveal the final curves or default assists.

A useful comparison should separate player preference from physical behavior. Use the same vehicle classes and repeat the same tests instead of judging one spectacular trailer moment.
- Choose comparable vehicles. Start with a four-door sedan, then repeat with a sports car and a heavier utility vehicle. Record the model names and whether any driving assists are enabled.
- Test straight-line braking. From the same marked location and speed, brake hard and note stopping distance, nose dive and whether the car remains stable under steering correction.
- Test a constant-radius corner. Enter at gradually increasing speeds. Observe when the front pushes wide, when the rear rotates and whether the transition is progressive enough to catch.
- Change direction quickly. Use a left-right lane change at a fixed speed. Watch how long the body takes to settle and whether a second steering input produces a delayed oscillation.
- Drive over uneven ground. Cross a curb, crest or rough shoulder at low and moderate speed. Compare wheel movement, body response and whether the car bounces or settles naturally.
- Repeat after a collision. Check whether alignment, steering, braking or acceleration change. Treat cosmetic deformation separately from mechanical consequences.
- Repeat with assists changed. If the game exposes traction, steering or stability options, document each setting. A default that feels forgiving may still rest on a detailed model underneath.
- Use several attempts. One clip can be an outlier. Repeat each maneuver and record whether the response is consistent and controllable.
This method will not turn either title into a laboratory simulator, but it will produce stronger evidence than trailer interpretation or memory of a single dramatic crash.
Which game should different players prefer?
If you want a driving model you can evaluate today
Choose GTA 4. Its behavior is available now, and you can decide for yourself whether the inertia, roll and braking feel convincing or cumbersome.
If you want the next-generation open-world experience
GTA 6 is the one to watch, but base expectations on Rockstar’s stated compromise rather than on a guaranteed technical breakthrough. The announced PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release is the first point at which its handling can be judged directly.
If you dislike difficult recovery from slides
GTA 6’s accessibility goal is encouraging, although no public evidence yet shows how forgiving its default steering and traction will be. GTA 4’s learning curve is a known quantity, so you can account for it before choosing.

If you are looking for mechanical-simulation depth
Neither title should be credited with features that have not been documented. In particular, GTA 6’s fuel, temperature, persistent failure and handling-mode behavior has not been officially specified in the available material.
Verdict
GTA 4 wins the evidence-based realism comparison because its heavy, inertia-driven handling is released, repeatable and hands-on. GTA 6 may deliver the better overall compromise if Rockstar successfully combines that weight with GTA 5’s accessibility, and the trailers suggest that suspension and weight transfer are important presentation goals. But edited footage cannot verify tire behavior, controller response, damage consequences or mechanical failures. Until the November 19, 2026 release and repeatable testing on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, calling GTA 6 definitively more realistic would go beyond the evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GTA 6 driving more realistic than GTA 4?
Not yet demonstrably. GTA 4 can be tested in full, while GTA 6 has only a stated design target and edited trailer footage. A final judgment requires hands-on gameplay.
Will GTA 6 have GTA 4’s weighty car physics?
Rockstar says it is preserving some of GTA 4’s weight and feel, while adding GTA 5’s accessibility. That is an intended balance, not a promise of identical handling parameters.
Which GTA has the most realistic handling?
Among these two, GTA 4 is the only one with proven, testable realism before GTA 6 launches. Whether GTA 6 surpasses it remains unresolved.
Do GTA 6 trailers prove realistic vehicle physics?
They show suspension movement and weight transfer in edited in-engine footage, but they do not provide an uncut controller sequence or repeatable measurements of grip, braking or damage.
Has Rockstar confirmed fuel, tire temperature or persistent mechanical failures in GTA 6?
No detailed vehicle-damage or physics specification has been published confirming those systems.
