Grand Theft Auto VI is a new, console-only-at-launch single-player game set in Leonida, including Vice City, while Grand Theft Auto V is the established Los Santos game that is already available. GTA VI introduces Jason and Lucia as its central protagonists and is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA V offers a completed campaign, its three-protagonist structure and a mature online ecosystem today.
The biggest unanswered question is map size. Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI’s setting but has not published an authoritative area measurement that can be compared directly with GTA V. Claims that the new map is a particular multiple of GTA V’s size should therefore be treated as speculation.

| Map-area measurement | Not stated by Rockstar | No current Rockstar measurement suitable for a precise comparison was provided |
That table captures the practical difference: GTA VI is the next mainline chapter and a new-generation console release, whereas GTA V is the known quantity you can play now. The games can be compared confidently on setting, protagonists, release timing and confirmed mode. They cannot yet be compared responsibly on exact land area, final mission systems, performance modes or day-one online plans.

GTA VI: Leonida and Vice City
Rockstar places GTA VI in the fictional state of Leonida and specifically highlights Vice City. Its official description calls the location “Only in Leonida Vice City, USA. The darkest side of the sunniest place in America.” That confirms a broader state-level setting with Vice City as a central location, rather than simply announcing a return to one isolated urban map.

- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
Leonida gives Rockstar room to contrast city streets with other environments in the same state. However, the official material cited for the game does not provide a complete list of regions, districts, highways, islands or rural areas. Treat Vice City and Leonida as confirmed; treat any additional map labels circulating online as unconfirmed unless Rockstar publishes them.
GTA V: Los Santos
GTA V uses Los Santos as its primary setting. It is the comparison baseline from the 2013 release: a fictional Southern California-inspired city and surrounding game world that players already know through its campaign and online content.
GTA V’s mature map is useful for judging the kind of experience a new Grand Theft Auto can provide—dense urban travel, longer drives between areas and activities distributed around a central city—but those observations do not establish GTA VI’s dimensions. A familiar setting can feel larger or smaller depending on road layouts, mission routing, travel speed and how much of the world is interactive.

There is no authoritative numerical answer yet. Rockstar has not supplied a map-area figure for GTA VI, and the available official GTA V material does not provide a current measurement suitable for a like-for-like comparison. A trailer’s camera movement, coastline shape or apparent travel distance cannot substitute for a published scale.
The defensible answer is therefore: GTA VI is confirmed to cover Leonida, including Vice City, but its exact size relative to Los Santos has not been established. Avoid statements that it is two, three or any other specific multiple of GTA V’s area. Such precision would imply evidence that is not available.
What to compare when a size number is missing
- Geographic variety: whether the finished game includes distinct urban, coastal and out-of-town environments, not merely how many square miles are enclosed by the map.
- Playable density: how many roads, interiors, activities and mission locations are usable rather than decorative.
- Travel design: whether journeys are meaningful parts of missions or simply empty time between objectives.
- Access: whether the world is open immediately or expands through story progress, equipment or other restrictions.
- Online persistence: whether later multiplayer content changes the practical value of the map after launch.
Those are questions to revisit after Rockstar publishes final specifications or the game is released. Until then, the confirmed geographic distinction is Leonida and Vice City versus Los Santos, not a verified area ranking.

How the protagonists and stories differ
Jason and Lucia in GTA VI
Jason and Lucia are GTA VI’s named central protagonists. Rockstar’s framing presents them as partners in crime, so the relationship between the two characters is part of the announced story premise rather than an incidental detail.
A two-person lead can support a tightly connected narrative: missions may be written around trust, risk and cooperation between the pair, with the story able to shift attention between them without introducing a larger playable roster. That is an implication of the announced setup, not confirmation of a particular switching mechanic or mission structure.
GTA V’s three-protagonist structure
GTA V is built around three protagonists. Its campaign therefore uses a broader ensemble than the announced pair in GTA VI. The important comparison is structural: GTA V distributes the story across three playable leads, while GTA VI’s official materials identify two central characters.
The number of protagonists does not by itself determine which campaign is longer, more complex or more varied. A two-character story can have more focused development, while a three-character game can create more contrast between viewpoints. Rockstar has not published a full cast-by-cast GTA VI comparison, so claims about every returning character, supporting role or playable identity should wait for official confirmation.
Are Jason and Lucia replacing GTA V’s three characters?
They replace the earlier game’s protagonist arrangement for the purposes of GTA VI’s announced story, but that does not mean Rockstar has described them as direct substitutes for any one GTA V character. Jason and Lucia are a new central pair in a different setting and narrative.

GTA VI’s materials establish the pair and their criminal partnership. They do not yet establish whether players can switch between them freely, whether both are present in every mission, how progression is divided, or whether additional playable characters will appear. GTA V’s three-protagonist structure is confirmed; a detailed mechanical comparison must await more information.

Gameplay: what is confirmed and what is still unknown
GTA VI launches as a single-player experience
Take-Two describes GTA VI as a “single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” That is the clearest confirmed launch-mode distinction. The announcement supports expectations for a story campaign designed around Jason and Lucia, but it does not specify every mission system, activity, vehicle feature or progression rule.
GTA VI’s trailers and official pages emphasize Leonida, Vice City, its characters, media and story presentation. Those materials establish tone and setting more reliably than they establish detailed mechanics. A trailer can show a vehicle, location or activity without confirming that it is a freely repeatable system available throughout the game.
GTA V is the mature, playable baseline
GTA V gives players an established Los Santos campaign and an online ecosystem that has already been operating for years. That maturity matters if you want known missions, documented progression and an immediately playable game rather than an upcoming release whose final feature list is still developing.
Recommended Free Tools
The comparison is not “old gameplay versus new gameplay” in a precise technical sense. GTA V’s systems are documented by years of player experience, while GTA VI’s final handling, mission design, activities and progression have not all been formally specified. It is safer to describe GTA VI as a new entry with a new setting and protagonists than to promise particular improvements.
Features you should not treat as confirmed
| Question | What can be stated now |
|---|---|
| Exact map dimensions | Not published in the authoritative material available for this comparison |
| Final mission systems | Not fully detailed |
| Performance modes and frame-rate targets | Not confirmed |
| PC launch timing | Not announced in the cited launch information |
| GTA Online at day one | Not confirmed |
| Complete playable-character roster | Not confirmed beyond Jason and Lucia as the central pair |
This distinction prevents a common buying mistake: treating online speculation as a specification. If a decision depends on PC support, a particular frame-rate mode, an online service or a specific feature, wait for Rockstar or Take-Two to announce it explicitly.
Platforms and release timing
GTA VI’s announced launch platforms
Rockstar Support and Xbox list November 19, 2026, as GTA VI’s launch date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those are the confirmed launch platforms in the available announcement. The game is therefore positioned as a current-generation console release rather than a title announced simultaneously for every platform.

A PC version and its timing are not established by the cited announcement. Do not assume a PC launch on November 19, 2026, or infer a release window from older series patterns. If you plan to play on PC, the responsible choice is to wait for an official platform announcement.

GTA V is the released predecessor and remains commercially available through Rockstar’s ecosystem. Its availability makes it the practical option for someone who wants a Grand Theft Auto campaign immediately, regardless of whether that player ultimately plans to buy GTA VI.
Because GTA V has existed across more than one hardware generation and edition, its exact price and supported storefront depend on the version you choose. Check the store listing for your console or account rather than assuming that every edition has identical content or pricing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price, editions and the physical GTA VI release
GTA VI’s announced standard price
Take-Two’s 2026 announcement lists a $79.99 launch price for the standard GTA VI product. That is a stated launch price, not a guarantee that every country will use the same currency conversion or that every edition will cost the same. Regional pricing, taxes, special editions and retailer promotions can change the amount you actually pay.
Physical copies may contain a download code
Rockstar Support confirms a physical GTA VI version containing a download code. That means “physical edition” does not necessarily mean that the complete game is stored on a disc or cartridge. Before buying, check the package description and your console’s available storage, internet connection and account requirements.
A download-code package can also affect gifting and resale. A code may be tied to the account that redeems it, and a used package may not contain an unused code. Verify the retailer’s specific product description before treating a physical listing as a transferable disc-based copy.

How to evaluate a GTA VI listing
- Confirm that the listing is for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, not an older-generation edition or an unrelated pre-order page.
- Check whether it is the standard edition or a higher-priced edition with separately described bonuses.
- Read whether the package contains a disc, a download code or a combination of both.
- Verify the release date, region, currency and return policy.
- Recheck the final price at checkout because taxes, delivery and retailer promotions can alter the advertised figure.
Should you buy GTA 5 now or wait for GTA 6?
Buy GTA V now if you want a known game immediately
- You want to play a complete Los Santos campaign before November 2026.
- You prefer a game whose missions, progression and three-protagonist structure are already documented.
- You want access to GTA V’s established online ecosystem rather than waiting for an unannounced GTA VI service.
- You are not moving to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S for the new release.
GTA V is the lower-uncertainty choice. You know the setting, campaign structure and current availability, and you do not need to wait for launch-day details.
Wait for GTA VI if its announced differences are the reason you are interested
- You specifically want Leonida and Vice City rather than another Los Santos campaign.
- You want to follow Jason and Lucia’s new criminal partnership.
- You own or intend to buy a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- You are comfortable waiting for the November 19, 2026 launch and for final information about features that remain unconfirmed.
Waiting is especially sensible if your decision depends on PC support, exact performance modes or an online mode. None of those points is established by the current launch announcement.
Buying both can make sense
The games are not interchangeable products. GTA V supplies an available Los Santos campaign and a mature online ecosystem; GTA VI is a forthcoming story experience in Leonida with Jason and Lucia. Buying GTA V now does not remove the reason to buy GTA VI later, unless your interest is limited to one specific setting or generation of hardware.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not
Firmly established
- GTA VI is the next mainline game after GTA V.
- Its confirmed setting is the fictional state of Leonida, including Vice City.
- Jason and Lucia are its central protagonists, presented as criminal partners.
- Take-Two describes the launch product as a single-player experience.
- The announced launch date is November 19, 2026.
- The announced launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- A physical version with a download code is confirmed.
- Take-Two’s cited standard launch price is $79.99.
- GTA V remains an available earlier entry with a Los Santos campaign and established online ecosystem.
Not established by the current announcements
- A numerical comparison of the two maps’ areas.
- A final list of GTA VI regions, interiors, activities or mission systems.
- Performance modes, resolution targets or frame-rate specifications.
- A PC release date.
- Day-one GTA Online plans for GTA VI.
- A complete GTA VI playable-character roster.
This boundary is useful when reading future previews and social-media claims. A confirmed setting or protagonist is evidence; a guessed area multiplier or launch feature is not.
The practical verdict
GTA VI is the more significant change: it moves the series to Leonida and Vice City, introduces Jason and Lucia, launches as a single-player experience on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and is scheduled for November 19, 2026. GTA V remains the better immediate choice because it is already available, its Los Santos campaign is established and its online ecosystem is mature.
If someone asks whether GTA VI is definitely bigger than GTA V, the accurate answer is still “not proven.” If they ask which game they can play now, the answer is GTA V. If they want the new setting and protagonists and have the announced consoles, GTA VI is the game to watch—without assuming features Rockstar has not yet confirmed.
