GTA VI will be a different kind of launch from GTA V. Rockstar is moving the story from Los Santos and Blaine County back to Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, with Jason and Lucia caught in a conspiracy that spans the region. The launch product is confirmed as a single-player game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. By contrast, GTA V became the foundation for a continuously updated GTA Online service. Rockstar and Take-Two have not yet published a GTA VI online roadmap, so multiplayer features, cross-play, progression transfers and an online launch date cannot be treated as confirmed.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5 at a glance
| Axis | GTA V baseline | GTA VI confirmed direction |
|---|---|---|
| World | Los Santos and Blaine County. | Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. |
| Central characters | GTA V uses three protagonists whose stories intersect. | Jason and Lucia lead a story built around a criminal conspiracy. |
| Launch structure | Story mode shipped alongside the later GTA Online service. | The official launch description identifies a single-player experience. |
| Platforms | Released across multiple console generations, with later standalone GTA Online versions. | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are the confirmed launch platforms. |
| Physical format | GTA V had conventional physical releases for its original platforms. | The announced physical edition is a box containing a digital download code, not a disc. |
| Online status | GTA Online became a long-running service with regular free updates. | No GTA VI multiplayer mode, timing, business model, cross-play or progression plan has been announced in the cited official material. |
That comparison separates what is known from what is merely expected. GTA VI can be discussed confidently as a new Vice City crime story and a current-generation console release. Its online future remains an open question rather than a feature list.

How the setting and story change the experience
Vice City returns, but the world is now Leonida
GTA VI returns to Vice City, the series’ fictional version of Miami, while expanding the setting to the state of Leonida. Rockstar’s product page identifies “Vice City, USA” and places the larger story across Leonida rather than limiting the action to one urban center.
GTA V divided its activity between Los Santos and the rural, mountainous and desert areas of Blaine County. Leonida gives Rockstar a different geographic premise: a recognizable coastal city can sit inside a broader state with its own towns, roads and environments. The official materials do not provide a map-area measurement, a complete list of regions or a feature-by-feature comparison with GTA V’s map. “Bigger” therefore cannot be established by square miles from the information currently published.

Jason and Lucia replace GTA V’s three-way structure
Rockstar describes Jason and Lucia as partners whose lives are already stacked against them. After an easy score goes wrong, they end up on the darkest side of the state’s “sunniest place in America” and become entangled in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. The pair must rely on one another to survive.
This is a different narrative emphasis from GTA V’s three protagonists and its deliberate switching among Michael, Franklin and Trevor. GTA VI’s official description centers a two-person relationship, so cooperation and trust are likely to matter more to the story’s emotional rhythm. That does not prove a particular mission system, a permanent partner mechanic or a fully shared campaign; those details have not been specified.
What the setting can change in practical play
A return to Vice City gives the game a distinct visual and cultural vocabulary from Los Angeles-inspired Los Santos. Coastal highways, dense urban districts and the wider Leonida road network can support different travel patterns and mission staging. These are reasonable implications of the announced setting, not confirmed mechanics. Rockstar has not published a complete transportation list, a weather simulation feature, a property system or a catalog of activities.
The official product page also advertises an “In-Game Radio and Music Preview” and calls it the “biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio yet.” That is Rockstar’s marketing description, not an independently measured comparison with GTA V. It does establish that radio and music remain part of the world-building approach.

What is confirmed about GTA VI gameplay
A single-player launch is the firm baseline
Take-Two’s latest cited pre-order announcement describes GTA VI as featuring a single-player experience. That wording is the strongest available statement about the launch structure. It tells buyers to expect a story-led game at release, but it does not enumerate mission types, side activities, character switching, co-operative play or post-launch modes.
Presentation ambition is not a mechanics list
Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 Trailer 2 release says the footage was captured on PlayStation 5 and calls GTA VI “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.” Rockstar founder Sam Houser similarly said in the December 4, 2023 announcement that the company was pushing the limits of highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences.
Those statements support an expectation of a technically ambitious, story-focused open world. They do not confirm a particular graphics mode, frame rate, physics model, artificial-intelligence behavior, crowd density, destructibility system or map scale. Treat trailer details as evidence of tone, characters and presentation, not as a complete specification.
How to read unconfirmed gameplay claims
Before launch, separate three categories:
- Confirmed: Vice City and Leonida, Jason and Lucia, a criminal-conspiracy premise, a single-player launch description and the announced console platforms.
- Strongly suggested but not specified: a more relationship-focused story structure and a large, visually ambitious open world.
- Unannounced: exact mission systems, vehicle handling changes, character swapping, economy rules, interiors, activity counts, mod support and any multiplayer mechanics.
This distinction matters because a trailer can show a moment without explaining whether it is a repeatable system, a scripted set piece or a one-time story event.

Launch product, editions and hardware
| Item | Confirmed information | What remains unstated |
|---|---|---|
| Release date | November 19, 2026, according to Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 release. | Any later schedule change would supersede that announcement. |
| Platforms | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. | No PC launch platform or date is stated in the cited announcements. |
| Standard Edition | Take-Two lists a $79.99 Standard Edition. | Regional pricing, taxes and retailer-specific terms are not established by that figure. |
| Ultimate Edition | An Ultimate Edition is announced. | Its price, contents and upgrade rules are not stated in the cited material. |
| Physical edition | A boxed digital download code; no game disc is included. | Retail packaging and redemption requirements can vary by market. |
| Retail availability for pre-loading | Rockstar support schedules retail availability from November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading. | The support information does not establish the download size or installation time. |
What the boxed download code means
Buying the physical edition does not mean receiving a disc that can be installed offline. The box contains a code for a digital download, so the buyer needs an internet connection, an account for the relevant console platform and enough storage for the installation. Keep the code and receipt until the game is redeemed successfully; a damaged or already-used code is a retailer-support issue rather than a disc-replacement situation.
Current-generation scope
Unlike GTA V’s long life across several hardware generations, GTA VI’s confirmed launch scope is limited to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That lets Rockstar target current-generation consoles, but it also means owners of older PlayStation or Xbox hardware should not assume compatibility. The cited official materials do not announce a PC version, a last-generation version or cross-generation entitlement.
GTA Online is the benchmark, not a confirmed GTA VI feature
What GTA V established
Take-Two describes GTA V as an “ever-changing world, driven by the regular release of free updates.” GTA Online was free with every copy of GTA V and later launched as a standalone version on March 15, 2022. That service model became the reference point for how players think about a modern Grand Theft Auto release: a story game can be followed by years of online events, missions, vehicles and other additions.
The scale of that baseline is reflected in Take-Two’s reported figures. The company reported more than 190 million GTA V units sold in 2023. In 2026 it reported more than 225 million units for the Grand Theft Auto series as a whole. Those totals show the reach of the existing product, but they do not predict GTA VI’s launch sales or its eventual online design.

What the current GTA VI wording actually says
The latest cited pre-order announcement says GTA VI “features a single-player experience” and separately refers to the “ever-evolving world of GTA Online” in the context of the GTA+ ecosystem. That confirms the continuing existence of GTA Online and the launch product’s single-player positioning. It does not say that GTA VI includes a multiplayer mode.
Rockstar has not yet detailed a GTA VI online mode. No cited official source supplies an online launch date, a mode name, a subscription or purchase requirement, a currency model, a server structure or a plan for post-launch updates.
Cross-play, shared progression and character transfers
There is no official confirmation that GTA V Online characters, money, properties, vehicles, achievements or account progression will carry into GTA VI. There is also no official confirmation of cross-play between PlayStation and Xbox, cross-progression between console families, or a shared progression system between single-player and online characters.

Players should therefore treat claims about “GTA Online 2,” automatic transfers or day-one multiplayer as speculation until Rockstar or Take-Two publishes those details. GTA V’s history is useful context, not proof of a matching feature in the new game.

Is GTA VI bigger than GTA V?
There are two different meanings of “bigger.” A world can cover more land, or it can contain more authored missions, interiors, activities, systemic interactions and online content. The available announcements establish that GTA VI ranges beyond Vice City into Leonida and that Rockstar presents it as the series’ biggest, most immersive evolution. They do not provide a verified area measurement or a content-count comparison with GTA V.
For a fair comparison, ask which measure matters to you:
- Geographic variety: Leonida’s state-wide setting may offer a broader mix of city and outlying environments than a city-and-county comparison, but no official area figure is available.
- Story scale: Jason and Lucia’s conspiracy is described as stretching across Leonida, while the number of missions and total campaign length remain unannounced.
- Long-term activity: GTA V has a decade-plus online history. GTA VI cannot match that accumulated library at launch, even if its initial world is more detailed.
- Technical ambition: Official language and PlayStation 5 trailer footage indicate a current-generation target, but they do not establish performance numbers.
The most accurate answer is that GTA VI is broader in setting and newer in technology by design, while GTA V is larger as an accumulated platform because GTA Online has been expanded through regular updates.

| Your priority | More defensible choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A new authored crime story | GTA VI at launch | The announced product is a single-player experience centered on Jason and Lucia. |
| Playing with friends immediately | Continue GTA Online | GTA VI multiplayer timing and features have not been announced. |
| Keeping an established character and properties | Continue GTA Online | No transfer or shared-progression plan is confirmed for GTA VI. |
| Playing on older consoles | Check compatibility before buying | The confirmed launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. |
| Owning a boxed copy without a disc | Choose based on download access | The physical edition is a download code, so internet access and storage are required. |
| Waiting for online details | Delay the purchase decision | Rockstar has not published the mode, date or business model for GTA VI online play. |
Buying at launch makes the clearest sense for players who want the new story, the Vice City setting and a current-generation open-world presentation. Staying with GTA Online is the lower-risk choice for anyone whose main reason to play is an established multiplayer routine, because that service already exists and its future does not depend on an unannounced GTA VI mode.
What to verify before release
- Check the platform listing. Confirm that the product is for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, not an older-generation listing or an unverified PC product.
- Check the edition. The Standard Edition is the only one in the cited material with a stated $79.99 price. Compare the Ultimate Edition’s contents and price once the seller publishes them.
- Read the format description. A physical box contains a digital download code and no disc. Make sure the code can be redeemed in your console account’s region.
- Plan storage and bandwidth. The code requires a download. Rockstar’s support information gives a pre-loading availability date but does not state the download size.
- Look for official online announcements. Only Rockstar or Take-Two can confirm a GTA VI online date, cross-play, transfers, monetization or progression.
- Keep expectations tied to evidence. Trailers can demonstrate characters, locations and presentation; they cannot by themselves establish every repeatable gameplay system.
Why the comparison matters
GTA V is not simply the previous story game. Its online component became a separately recognizable service, supported by regular free updates and a standalone release. GTA VI arrives with that legacy shaping expectations, but its confirmed launch product is a single-player adventure. Comparing the two as if both have identical online packages would make the new game’s unannounced features sound certain when they are not.
The strongest evidence points to a new setting, a new central relationship and a current-generation console focus. GTA V remains the benchmark for longevity and established online play. Until Rockstar publishes more, that is the useful dividing line: GTA VI is the announced story experience in Leonida; GTA Online is the proven live service players can already access.
