Rockstar has confirmed a fictional state called Leonida, modern Vice City and surrounding regions, and a two-character crime story led by Jason and Lucia. GTA V, released in 2013, is built around Los Santos and Blaine County and lets you switch among Michael, Franklin and Trevor. The sequel also targets newer console hardware, with PlayStation describing DualSense effects and near-instant SSD loading on PS5.
There is still one important limit to any map comparison: Rockstar has not published a final square-mile figure or an official percentage showing how much larger GTA VI is than GTA V. The defensible conclusion is geographic, not numerical: GTA VI presents Vice City as part of a whole state, while GTA V focuses on one metropolitan area and its county.

What GTA VI has confirmed
Rockstar’s official product wording identifies the setting as “Only in Leonida Vice City, USA.” Trailer 2 expands that description by presenting a conspiracy that spreads across the state of Leonida. The safest interpretation is that the game contains modern Vice City as its principal urban environment while also providing places outside the city.
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
That wording matters because Vice City is not being presented as the entire playable geography. GTA VI’s framing is a state-level journey: city streets, outlying communities and other parts of Leonida connected by the story and open-world travel. Rockstar has not published the final boundary, a definitive list of regions or a measured total area.
How GTA V’s world is organized
GTA V uses Los Santos and Blaine County as one connected open world. Los Santos supplies the dense urban core, while Blaine County provides rural roads, smaller settlements, wilderness and varied coastlines. The world can be explored on foot, by road vehicle, aircraft or watercraft, so the contrast with GTA VI is about presentation and geography as much as raw distance.
GTA V’s map is therefore a city-and-county structure. GTA VI’s confirmed description is a city-within-a-state structure. Both are open worlds, but the sequel’s official language puts more emphasis on movement between different parts of a fictional state.
How much bigger is the GTA 6 map?
No official number currently answers that question. Rockstar has not released a square-mile measurement or a percentage comparison with GTA V in the cited official material. Any exact ratio circulating online should be treated as an unofficial estimate rather than a confirmed specification.
You can still make a useful comparison without inventing precision:
- GTA V: Los Santos and Blaine County form the established comparison world.
- GTA VI: modern Vice City is confirmed, with the story extending across Leonida beyond the city.
- What cannot yet be stated: the final playable area, the amount of water versus land, the number of settlements and the percentage by which one game exceeds the other.
For planning purposes, expect a broader geographic frame in GTA VI, not a published promise that the map is a particular number of times larger.

- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.

Story and protagonists: a duo instead of three switchable leads
Jason and Lucia’s partnership
Trailer 2 identifies Jason and Lucia as GTA VI’s central pair. Rockstar’s description says an easy score goes wrong, forcing them to rely on each other as a conspiracy spreads across Leonida. That setup makes their relationship the confirmed organizing principle of the campaign.
The available material establishes the pair, the failed job and the conspiracy. It does not provide a complete mission list, the exact sequence of their criminal careers or every supporting character. Those details should not be filled in with rumor.
GTA V’s three-protagonist design
GTA V’s campaign follows Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Players can switch among them at many points, and the perspective changes let the story move between their separate lives and shared operations. The result is an ensemble structure: three playable viewpoints, distinct personal conflicts and missions that eventually overlap.
What the structural change means
The clearest difference is not simply “two characters versus three.” GTA VI is confirmed as a partnership-led crime story, while GTA V is an ensemble built around three switchable protagonists. That change can affect how missions are framed, how the player interprets risk and how the narrative distributes screen time, but Rockstar has not published enough mission detail to claim a particular switching system or mission count for GTA VI.
Do not assume that Jason and Lucia will function exactly like GTA V’s protagonists. The official descriptions confirm their central role, not whether the player can change between them freely, whether both appear in every activity or how their abilities differ.
Gameplay: what is confirmed and what is still open
GTA V’s established gameplay baseline
GTA V provides a useful reference point because its systems are documented through the released game. It supports third-person and first-person perspectives, firearms and melee combat, swimming, driving and other vehicle traversal, aircraft, watercraft and an eight-slot weapon wheel. Story missions also use protagonist switching as a core feature.

- Perspective: switch between third-person and first-person play.
- Combat: use firearms and melee attacks.
- Movement: travel on foot, swim and operate road vehicles, aircraft and watercraft.
- Equipment: select weapons through the eight-slot weapon wheel.
- Campaign structure: change between Michael, Franklin and Trevor at many points.
These are the systems you can safely use as the GTA VI comparison baseline. They describe what GTA V actually offers, not a promise that the sequel will copy every control or interface choice.
GTA VI footage provenance
Rockstar says Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game on a PlayStation 5 and consists of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes. That statement confirms the footage’s source and presentation, but it is not a complete feature list. A trailer can demonstrate animation, environments and specific interactions without proving that every shown action is available everywhere in the finished game.
Confirmed PS5 technology
PlayStation describes two GTA VI features tied to PS5 hardware. DualSense responsive vibrations are intended to communicate choices and environmental effects through the controller. The PS5 SSD is described as enabling near-instant loading across Leonida.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese are meaningful technical differences from the GTA V baseline because they concern how the world is delivered and felt, not merely its visual detail. They do not establish a universal loading time in seconds, a resolution target or a frame-rate mode. No such performance figures are confirmed in the cited material.
Features you should not treat as confirmed
Official pages currently support the setting, protagonists, trailer provenance, platforms and the selected PS5 features above. They do not establish a complete list of gameplay systems. In particular, avoid presenting leaked mechanics, fan-made map measurements, alleged animal counts or rumored activities as final GTA VI features.
A practical way to read future announcements is to separate three levels of certainty:

Traversal and world interaction
What carries over as a comparison
GTA V lets players move through its city, county and surrounding water by walking, swimming, driving, flying and boating. That range is important when comparing open-world design: the map is not experienced only from a car, and distance can be shaped by terrain, roads, coastlines and access to aircraft.

GTA VI’s confirmed state-wide setting implies a similar need for varied travel, but Rockstar has not published a definitive vehicle roster or a complete traversal system list. The only confirmed technical statement in this area is PlayStation’s description of SSD-enabled near-instant loading across Leonida.
Why loading matters for a larger-feeling world
Near-instant loading can reduce interruptions when moving between parts of Leonida. It does not prove that every transition is seamless, nor does it tell you how large the world is. It is best understood as a hardware-supported presentation goal: the PS5 storage system is being used to stream the game world with fewer visible pauses.

GTA VI’s announced consoles
Take-Two Interactive lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation’s official page lists PS5 and PS5 Pro support and describes standard and ultimate digital editions. The announced console launch date is November 19, 2026.
The $79.99 figure is Take-Two’s announced launch price for GTA VI on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is a stated launch price, not a guarantee that every edition, territory or retailer will use the same amount. Edition names, prices, stock, physical packaging and regional availability can change, so verify the store listing for your country before buying.

GTA V’s release history as context
GTA V launched in 2013, then became available through later versions on additional console generations. That long release history explains why it is commonly used as the baseline for comparisons: its world, controls and campaign systems are known from the shipped game rather than from pre-release footage.

Is GTA VI coming to PC?
The cited official announcements do not confirm a PC launch date. The announced platforms are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with PS5 Pro support listed by PlayStation. Do not convert the absence of a PC date into either a promise or a cancellation; wait for Rockstar or Take-Two to publish a PC platform announcement.
Buying GTA VI versus continuing with GTA V
When the sequel is the relevant purchase
GTA VI is the choice if you want the newly announced Leonida setting, the Jason-and-Lucia story and the PS5 features described by PlayStation. Its announced console release is November 19, 2026, so availability before that date should not be assumed.
When GTA V remains the practical option
GTA V is the immediately playable option for its Los Santos and Blaine County world, three-protagonist campaign and established first- or third-person gameplay. Its systems are documented through the released game, whereas GTA VI’s complete feature set is not yet public.

- Confirm whether a listing is the standard or ultimate digital edition.
- Check that the platform is PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for the announced GTA VI launch.
- Verify the price in your region; the $79.99 announcement is the stated figure from Take-Two, not a universal local price.
- Check whether a physical version, stock status and packaging are available in your territory.
- Do not buy on the assumption that a PC version is available at launch; no PC timing is confirmed in the cited announcements.
What remains unknown before launch
A careful comparison should identify the unanswered questions instead of filling them with confident-sounding estimates. The cited official material leaves these points open:
- The final numeric size of Leonida and its ratio to GTA V’s world.
- The complete list of regions, towns, interiors and activities in GTA VI.
- The full vehicle, weapon and combat inventories.
- Whether Jason and Lucia can be switched freely during exploration, and how their individual abilities differ.
- Detailed performance targets such as resolution, frame-rate modes and exact loading times.
- A PC release date or PC technical specifications.
- Final edition names, physical packaging, regional pricing and retailer availability.
These are not minor omissions: each one affects how you would compare daily play, hardware requirements or value. Until the publisher provides the relevant specification, the accurate answer is that it has not been established.
How to compare the games without falling for misleading claims
- Start with the official setting. Use Leonida and modern Vice City for GTA VI, and Los Santos and Blaine County for GTA V.
- Separate geography from area. A state-level description does not supply a square-mile measurement.
- Use confirmed characters. Jason and Lucia are GTA VI’s announced pair; Michael, Franklin and Trevor are GTA V’s playable trio.
- Distinguish footage from a feature list. Trailer 2’s PS5 capture confirms how the trailer was made, not every mechanic in the final game.
- Check the platform statement. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are announced for GTA VI; a PC date is not.
- Attach conditions to prices and dates. The $79.99 figure and November 19, 2026 date come from Take-Two’s 2026 announcement and can be affected by edition or regional differences.
Bottom line: which game is more different?
GTA VI’s major change is the combination of scope and structure: modern Vice City is presented inside the wider state of Leonida, and the campaign centers on Jason and Lucia rather than GTA V’s three-character ensemble. The sequel is also built for current-generation consoles, with PlayStation highlighting DualSense environmental feedback and near-instant SSD loading on PS5.
GTA V remains the known quantity: a 2013 Los Santos and Blaine County open world with first- or third-person play, broad land-and-water traversal, an eight-slot weapon wheel and switchable protagonists. GTA VI is announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026 at a stated $79.99 launch price, with PS5 Pro support listed by PlayStation. The map may feel broader because its setting reaches beyond one city, but no official numeric map-size comparison exists yet.
