Who should choose GTA 5 Online?
You want multiplayer immediately
GTA 5 Online is the only one of the two games with a confirmed, playable online environment today. You can join friends, build a character, earn money, buy properties and vehicles, and use the established activity catalog without waiting for a release date. That certainty matters if your purchase is primarily about group sessions rather than a campaign.
Its maturity is also useful for players who prefer a known ruleset. Guides, communities and established strategies exist for the economy, missions and activities. You are not buying into an unknown launch structure; you are entering a service whose current features can be checked on the version you plan to use.
You already own GTA Online progress
Keeping your current character, money, properties and achievements is a practical reason to stay with GTA 5 Online. Grand Theft Auto V lets you start with Story Mode and move into GTA Online when you are ready. That makes it useful for households with different preferences: one person can play the campaign alone while another joins friends online. The new setting is Leonida, including Vice City. Rockstar’s official wording, “Only in Leonida Vice City, USA,” signals a different world from GTA 5’s Los Santos. If exploring a new map, meeting a new cast and seeing a fresh interpretation of the series matter more than retaining an existing online character, GTA 6 is the more relevant purchase.
You can use the confirmed launch hardware
The announced launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You will need one of those consoles to play GTA 6 at launch based on the official information currently available. A PS4, Xbox One or PC is not a confirmed launch platform.

PS4 and Xbox One
No older-console version is confirmed in the official information used here. Do not assume backward compatibility means the game will run on PS4 or Xbox One; backward compatibility usually concerns older games running on newer hardware, not a new game being released for an older generation.
