As of October 7, 2026, the clearest difference is the story structure: GTA V follows three playable protagonists whose stories intertwine, while GTA VI’s official premise centers on Jason and Lucia, a criminal partnership caught in a conspiracy across Leonida. Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI’s setting and release date, but not a complete list of its gameplay systems.
How do the stories differ?
GTA V: three protagonists and interwoven stories
Rockstar describes Grand Theft Auto V as an interwoven story about Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. Players switch among the three leads, whose different lives and skillsets feed into major heists. That ensemble structure is one of the game’s defining confirmed features. Rockstar’s 2013 preview and its current-generation announcement describe the protagonists and the stories set across Los Santos and Blaine County.
GTA VI: Jason and Lucia rely on each other
Rockstar’s official premise follows Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong. The pair become caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida and must rely on one another to survive. The synopsis establishes a partnership under pressure and a widening criminal situation; it does not reveal the conspiracy’s full mechanics, the ending, or every playable character.
Rockstar’s Trailer 2 description puts it this way: “But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

How do Vice City and Leonida compare with Los Santos and Blaine County?
GTA V is set in Los Santos and neighboring Blaine County, a fictional region that Rockstar describes through its city and countryside. Its open world includes urban areas as well as countryside, mountains, and ocean.
GTA VI is set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, according to Rockstar’s official game page. The supported comparison is a move from Los Santos and its surrounding county to Vice City within a broader state setting. Rockstar’s cited material does not provide compatible measured areas for both worlds, so claims that one map is a certain number of times larger are not established.

What gameplay is confirmed—and what remains unknown?
GTA V’s established systems
Rockstar’s GTA V preview confirms these useful points of comparison:
- Three playable protagonists: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.
- Character switching among the leads, who have distinct skillsets.
- Multi-part heists that involve preparation and crew selection.
- An open world spanning city, countryside, mountains, and ocean.
What GTA VI’s trailer can and cannot show
Rockstar says Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5 and includes both gameplay and cutscenes. It offers evidence of the game’s presentation and some playable moments, but a trailer scene does not by itself establish a finalized, representative mechanic. Rockstar’s cited materials do not support a full feature-by-feature gameplay comparison with GTA V.

That means the safest expectation is that GTA VI will tell its story through Jason and Lucia in Leonida; details such as specific controls, mission systems, and how character control works have not been established in the official sources cited here. Nor does the official synopsis prove that the game has no additional playable characters.
