If you only want to play The Outlast Trials, the Standard edition is the straightforward choice: it includes the base game. Deluxe adds the Reagent Starter Pack, which is cosmetic rather than a stated gameplay requirement. You can play solo or with others, but the game requires an internet connection. Before buying, check your platform’s live price and, on Xbox console, whether you need a separate multiplayer subscription.
Which edition should you buy?
The practical choice is between base-game access and extra customization. The US PlayStation Store listing showed Standard at $39.99 and Deluxe at $49.99 when checked for this guide; these are regional storefront prices that can change, not universal prices. Check your local store for the current amount.
| Edition | What the cited listings say it includes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Base game (PlayStation Store listing) | Players who want access to the game without paying for the Starter Pack. |
| Deluxe | Base game plus the Reagent Starter Pack (Xbox listing). PlayStation describes the pack as four legendary outfits, player-cell customization, and player-icon customization. | Players who specifically want those cosmetic extras. |
The Xbox and PlayStation listings identify the Starter Pack as the Deluxe extra. Nothing in the cited listings establishes that it is needed to play the core game. Compare the live prices in your region before deciding whether the cosmetics are worth the difference.
Do you need DLC or paid add-ons?
No paid add-on is established as necessary to access the core game. Xbox and PlayStation list optional add-ons, including cosmetic packs; Xbox also lists Murkoff Coins. Names and availability can vary by platform and region, so use the add-ons section of your own storefront to see what is currently offered. The official listings do not establish that these purchases are required gameplay content.

What do you need to play?
A supported platform
The cited listings cover PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC through Steam. Xbox also identifies Xbox Cloud Gaming, whose availability may depend on service, region, and subscription. If you already own a supported system, you do not need to buy another device just for this game.
An internet connection
PlayStation marks online play as required. That does not mean you must bring a group: its listing describes solo or team play. PlayStation lists up to four online players, while Xbox describes online co-op for two to four players.
An Xbox console multiplayer subscription
For online console multiplayer on Xbox, Microsoft says a qualifying Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription is required and sold separately. This is an Xbox-specific requirement; do not assume it applies to PC or PlayStation. Check the relevant platform’s current terms.
A PC that meets the full requirements
Steam lists Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM, and 40 GB of available storage among the minimum requirements. Those details are not the complete specification: check the live Steam listing for the current CPU and graphics requirements before buying or installing.

Yes. Red Barrels says full cross-play is supported among PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. The same announcement says cross-progression is not supported, so progress does not carry over if you later move to a different platform and buy the game there.

Quick Recap
How to choose where to buy
- Start with the hardware you own. Choose the supported platform you already use rather than buying another device solely for the game.
- Pick Standard unless you want the Starter Pack cosmetics. Deluxe adds the Reagent Starter Pack; the cited listings do not make it a gameplay requirement.
- Check multiplayer costs for your platform. Xbox console online multiplayer requires a qualifying Game Pass subscription sold separately.
- If you are on PC, compare your hardware against the complete Steam requirements. The RAM and storage figures above are only part of the minimum specification.
