Grand Theft Auto VI is a current-generation sequel, not a simple remaster of GTA V. It moves the series into the fictional state of Leonida, returns to Vice City as its major city, introduces Jason and Lucia as a paired central cast, and launches as a single-player experience on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. GTA V remains the comparison baseline: its established Los Santos and Blaine County setting, predecessor-era protagonist structure, and older-generation design are the known point of reference.
The biggest difference is therefore confirmed direction rather than a published list of every new mechanic. Rockstar has shown the new setting, protagonists, vehicles, weapons, clothing, shops and other world content, but it has not published an authoritative GTA VI map acreage, a defensible size multiplier against GTA V, a PC release date or the final scope of online play.

This table separates what Rockstar and Take-Two have actually confirmed from assumptions based on trailers, rumors or the series’ history. The differences below explain what each change means for a player deciding whether to revisit GTA V or wait for GTA VI.
Map: Leonida expands the setting beyond GTA V’s Los Santos
GTA V’s baseline is a concentrated regional sandbox
GTA V established Los Santos as its major urban environment and paired it with Blaine County. That combination gives the predecessor a recognizable city-and-countryside structure: the player compares dense streets, outlying communities and open terrain within one connected region. It is the right baseline for judging GTA VI because the new game is not presented as another version of the same Los Santos map.
#1 Best Overall
GTA VI moves to the state of Leonida
Rockstar identifies GTA VI’s fictional state as Leonida, with Vice City as its major city. The setting also includes regions beyond the city, making the announced world a state-wide environment rather than a single urban remake. In practical terms, the map’s identity comes from the relationship between Vice City and the surrounding parts of Leonida: the city is the anchor, while the wider state supplies the broader geography for Jason and Lucia’s story.
This is a change in geographic scope and tone. GTA V asks the player to read Los Santos and Blaine County as one metropolitan region. GTA VI’s official framing instead points to movement across an entire fictional state. That does not automatically tell us how many square miles are playable or how much of the world is explorable, but it does establish a different organizing idea for the map.
Is the GTA VI map bigger than GTA V?
There is no authoritative acreage figure or reliable GTA VI-to-GTA V size ratio in the official material reviewed. It is accurate to say that GTA VI expands the setting into Leonida, including Vice City and surrounding regions. It is not accurate to publish a precise multiplier, claim a specific number of square miles, or present a social-media measurement as settled fact.

A larger state can contain more varied routes, but travel time, density, mission design, interiors and the amount of meaningful activity matter just as much as the outline on a comparison graphic. Until Rockstar provides a measured area and explains what counts as playable land and water, the useful comparison is structural: GTA V’s Los Santos/Blaine County region versus GTA VI’s Vice City/Leonida state setting.
What is still unknown about the world
- The exact acreage of Leonida and the playable portion of its surrounding regions.
- A defensible percentage or multiplier comparing the GTA VI map with GTA V.
- The final number of named districts, rural areas, interiors and optional activities.
- Whether every region shown in promotional material will be freely accessible at all points in the story.
Those gaps are normal before launch, but they matter when evaluating map claims. Treat an exact map number as unconfirmed unless Rockstar publishes it.
Characters and story: from GTA V’s predecessor-era design to Jason and Lucia
Jason and Lucia are the confirmed protagonists
GTA VI’s central characters are Jason and Lucia. Rockstar presents them as partners whose fortunes are tied together by a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. The official story copy describes the pair this way:
“Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

The wording establishes more than two character names. Their relationship is part of the story’s premise: an attempted score goes wrong, the consequences spread across the state, and survival depends on cooperation. Rockstar has not described every mission or explained whether control alternates in a particular way, so the confirmed point is the paired lead structure and its connection to the conspiracy.
How that differs from GTA V
GTA V is the predecessor-era comparison point. Its story design is already established, while GTA VI’s announced structure centers on one named pair. The difference is best described as a change in the story’s confirmed focal relationship, not as a complete specification of the control system. Do not assume from the announcement alone that GTA VI will copy or abandon any particular switching mechanic.
For players, a paired cast can change how missions are written. A job can be framed around trust, divided responsibilities and the consequences of one character’s choices for the other. That is an interpretation of the premise, not a promise of a specific feature; Rockstar has not published a full mission-system breakdown.
What has not been confirmed about the cast
- The complete supporting cast and the roles of individual side characters.
- The precise way players move between Jason and Lucia during free roam or missions.
- Whether the story includes additional playable protagonists beyond the confirmed pair.
- How character progression, inventory sharing or relationship choices work.
Those details should remain separate from the confirmed statement that Jason and Lucia are the central pair.

Gameplay and world content: confirmed additions, not a full mechanics list
GTA VI launches with a single-player experience
Take-Two describes the launch product as featuring a single-player experience. That confirms the initial product framing, but it does not publish a complete account of every mode or post-launch plan. The final scope of GTA VI’s online component remains unknown in the official material reviewed.
Rockstar lists a broader set of world objects and services
The official store listing identifies new or included world content such as vehicles, weapons, clothing, shops, safehouse vehicles, mod shops, salons, tattoo parlors and a classic car collection. These categories indicate the kinds of objects and customization spaces players can expect to encounter, but the listing is not a detailed mechanics specification. It does not, for example, state how many vehicles are available, how modification systems work, or whether every shop category is accessible from the beginning.
| Confirmed content category | What the announcement establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicles | New vehicles and safehouse vehicles are listed | Final vehicle count, handling model or performance statistics |
| Weapons | Weapons are listed among the world content | Weapon classes, inventory limits or balancing |
| Clothing | Clothing is listed | Wardrobe size, outfit rules or cosmetic progression |
| Shops and services | Shops, mod shops, salons and tattoo parlors are listed | Opening hours, prices, interiors or mission requirements |
| Collections | A classic car collection is listed | Its size, acquisition method or completion rewards |
Current-generation presentation is a meaningful technical change
GTA VI is announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, making those consoles the target hardware for the launch. Compared with GTA V’s predecessor-era baseline, that gives Rockstar a newer hardware target for streaming the Leonida world, presenting its characters and populating its shops and activities. However, no final frame-rate modes, resolution targets, installation size or detailed performance specifications are published in the material available here.

That distinction matters when reading claims about improved graphics or artificial intelligence. Current-generation targeting supports the expectation of a newer presentation, but it does not prove a particular frame rate, visual mode or NPC behavior. Detailed systems such as social-media mechanics and AI behavior are unconfirmed.

Online play remains an open question
The launch announcement’s single-player wording should not be turned into either “GTA VI has no online mode” or a promise that a particular online feature will ship. Rockstar and Take-Two have not confirmed the final online-mode scope in the official sources reviewed. Players who are buying primarily for multiplayer should wait for a specific announcement rather than rely on leaks or social-media posts.
Release date, platforms and pre-loading
Confirmed launch information
Rockstar lists November 19, 2026, as the release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-loading begins November 12, 2026, according to the Rockstar Store listing. The seven-day gap is a practical planning detail: console owners can download the launch files in advance, but access still begins on the stated release date.

| Release date | November 19, 2026 |
| Launch platforms | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S |
| Pre-load date | November 12, 2026 |

What this means for PC players
There is no confirmed PC release date in the official sources reviewed. Do not infer a launch-day PC version from the console announcement, and do not convert an alleged retailer listing or rumor into a schedule. If PC is your only platform, the responsible answer is that timing remains unannounced.
GTA VI editions, prices and the physical format
United States launch prices
In a June 24, 2026 release, Take-Two lists a $79.99 standard edition and a $99.99 Ultimate Edition in the United States. These are the prices stated for that market and announcement; they should not be generalized to other regions, taxes or future retailer promotions.

The Rockstar Store lists edition content that includes vehicles, weapons, clothing, safehouse vehicles, mod shops, salons, tattoo parlors and a classic car collection. Confirm the exact allocation of bonuses to the edition you select at checkout; the existence of a listed content category is not a promise that every item is included in every version.
The physical copy is code-in-box
Rockstar states that the physical version is a code-in-box product and contains no disc. That is the most important buying detail for anyone who expects a traditional Blu-ray or DVD. A physical package gives you the boxed product and a redemption code, but it does not provide a disc that can be inserted and used independently of the code-based activation process.
- Check the platform label before buying: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are separate products.
- Keep the code and proof of purchase until the game is redeemed successfully.
- Ensure the console account and region meet the retailer’s redemption requirements.
- Do not assume a code-in-box package can be resold or loaned in the same way as a disc.
Should you buy GTA V now or wait for GTA VI?
The answer depends on which experience you want, not on an unverified map-size claim.
Buy or play GTA V now if you want an established experience
- You specifically want the known Los Santos and Blaine County setting.
- You prefer to play a finished predecessor rather than wait for a 2026 launch.
- You want a reference point for judging how GTA VI changes the series after release.
- You are comfortable with the predecessor-era protagonist design and do not require the Jason-and-Lucia story.
GTA V remains the clear baseline for comparison because its world and story are already established. Take-Two and Rockstar reported more than 470 million units sold-in worldwide in a 2026 corporate statement; that figure is a company-wide sales statement and does not, by itself, provide a GTA VI sales figure or a title-by-title breakdown.
Wait for GTA VI if the announced changes are the reason you are interested
- You want Vice City within the wider Leonida setting.
- You want the confirmed Jason-and-Lucia story premise.
- You want a game built for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S at launch.
- You care about the newly listed vehicles, weapons, clothing, shops and customization locations.
- You need confirmed information about PC or online play before committing.
Waiting is especially sensible if your purchase decision depends on a feature Rockstar has not yet specified. The map’s exact size, PC timing and online scope cannot currently settle that decision.
A simple decision checklist
- Choose your platform. If you own PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, GTA VI has a confirmed launch platform. If you require PC, there is no announced date to schedule around.
- Choose your setting. Los Santos and Blaine County point to GTA V; Vice City and the wider Leonida state point to GTA VI.
- Choose your story structure. GTA V is the established predecessor; GTA VI’s confirmed leads are Jason and Lucia.
- Choose your purchase format. The physical GTA VI product is code-in-box with no disc, so buy the format that matches your account and hardware.
- Ignore unsupported precision. Do not base the purchase on an exact map multiplier, a rumored PC date or an assumed online feature.
Rumors and claims to treat cautiously
Several subjects are frequently presented online with more certainty than the official material supports. Keep these categories separate from confirmed information:
- Exact map dimensions: no official acreage or GTA VI-to-GTA V ratio is established.
- PC timing: no release date is confirmed in the reviewed sources.
- Online features: the final scope of online play is not published.
- Social-media systems and AI behavior: detailed mechanics remain unconfirmed.
- Final performance targets: resolution, frame-rate modes and installation requirements are not stated here.
- Unannounced characters or control rules: Jason and Lucia are confirmed, but the complete cast and switching system are not.
A leaked screenshot, fan map or anonymous post can be interesting, but it should not be described as a feature or specification until Rockstar confirms it.
What the comparison tells us before launch
GTA V and GTA VI represent different kinds of certainty. GTA V offers a known Los Santos/Blaine County world and a completed predecessor-era story design. GTA VI offers a confirmed direction: a state-wide Leonida setting centered on Vice City, a paired story about Jason and Lucia, current-generation console targeting and a single-player launch experience with a new collection of vehicles, weapons, clothing and world services.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The evidence supports calling GTA VI broader in setting and newer in technology target. It does not support declaring an exact map advantage, promising a PC version, or describing online and advanced simulation systems as finished features. Those distinctions let you compare the games without turning marketing copy or rumor into specifications.
Bottom line: which game is different in the ways that matter?
GTA VI changes the setting from GTA V’s Los Santos and Blaine County to Leonida and Vice City, shifts the confirmed story focus to Jason and Lucia, and targets PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 launch. It also lists a wider set of vehicles, weapons, clothing and services, while retaining a single-player launch focus. GTA V is the established predecessor; GTA VI is the state-wide, current-generation follow-up whose exact map size, PC timing and online scope are still awaiting official confirmation.
