Map and setting: Leonida versus Los Santos and Blaine County
What GTA 5’s map gives you
GTA 5 is built around Los Santos, a dense coastal metropolis, and Blaine County, the rural and desert region surrounding it. That contrast supports the game’s three-character structure: urban crime, celebrity culture and corporate wealth sit close to mountains, small towns, airfields and open country. The map’s identity comes from moving between those environments rather than from a single uninterrupted city grid.

What GTA 6 changes
GTA 6 is set in Leonida, with a modern Vice City at its center and additional regions around it. The official GTA 6 site presents the state and its characters, while the Rockstar Store describes a criminal conspiracy that stretches “across the state of Leonida.” That wording establishes a broader state-level frame than GTA 5’s Los Santos-and-Blaine-County presentation.
Vice City is not simply a renamed Los Santos. It returns the series to a neon coastal metropolis associated with the earlier Vice City setting, but the announced game places that city inside a larger state. The practical consequence is a different balance between metropolitan density and travel through outlying areas. Rockstar has not published a final map diagram, area measurement or travel-time specification in the official pages covered here.
How much bigger is the GTA 6 map?
There is no official square-mile or square-kilometre comparison to quote. Fan-made estimates, leaked-map interpretations and side-by-side screenshots are not a substitute for a measurement published by Rockstar, so claims that GTA 6 is a particular percentage larger than GTA 5 should be treated as unverified.

What can be said confidently is qualitative: GTA 6’s announced geography includes Vice City plus surrounding parts of Leonida, whereas GTA 5’s named setting is Los Santos and Blaine County. “Bigger” can also mean denser, more varied or more connected, not merely wider on a map. Until Rockstar documents boundaries and scale, the useful comparison is breadth of setting rather than a number.
What the map difference means for play
- More regional contrast: Leonida’s state-wide framing leaves room for city, coastal and rural environments to matter to the story, but the exact activities and transitions have not been confirmed.
- A different travel rhythm: A larger geographic frame can create longer journeys and more distinct regions. It does not automatically mean more missions, interiors or meaningful interactions.
- No safe numeric expectation: Do not buy on the assumption that a leaked map size, land-area ratio or travel-time claim is official.
Story and protagonists: a duo replaces GTA 5’s trio
GTA 5’s three-protagonist design
Rockstar describes GTA 5 as the story of “a young street hustler, a retired bank robber, and a terrifying psychopath” whose paths converge in Los Santos. Those roles correspond to Franklin, Michael and Trevor. During the story, you can switch among the three central protagonists, and missions are structured around their different skills, relationships and viewpoints.

The trio gives GTA 5 a deliberately wide tonal range. Franklin’s rise, Michael’s attempt to manage an old life and Trevor’s volatile criminality are parallel storylines that can intersect in a single mission. That is a confirmed structural feature of GTA 5, not a prediction about GTA 6.
GTA 6’s Jason and Lucia
GTA 6’s announced story follows Jason and Lucia. Rockstar’s store description frames them as partners whose easy score goes wrong, leaving them in the middle of a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. The official wording is:
“But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”
This is a two-person narrative frame rather than GTA 5’s three-way ensemble. It suggests that trust, dependence and the consequences of a shared criminal decision will be central themes. It does not, by itself, confirm whether GTA 6 will use GTA 5’s exact character-switching system, allow simultaneous control in every mission or provide a particular co-op story mode.

Gameplay: what is documented and what is still unknown
GTA 5’s established activity model
GTA 5 combines a scripted single-player campaign with open-world activities in Los Santos and Blaine County. Its defining gameplay choice is the ability to move among three protagonists, each bringing a different perspective to missions and free exploration.

GTA Online extends that world into a persistent multiplayer environment. Rockstar describes it as “a dynamic and ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players.” Documented activities include cooperative Heists, Stunt Races, Adversary Modes, businesses, nightclubs, arcades, penthouse parties, car meetups and other social spaces. How GTA Online Heists work
Rockstar’s Heists announcement calls them a four-player cooperative experience built from multi-part missions. Players take on complementary roles such as hacking, stealth infiltration, precision driving, aerial dogfighting, sniping and skydiving. That role-based structure is one reason GTA 5’s online play remains more than a free-roaming deathmatch: a crew can prepare, assign jobs and execute a plan together.
What GTA 6 officially promises
The official GTA 6 pages establish the Leonida setting, Vice City, Jason and Lucia, and the statewide crime story. They do not provide a complete catalogue of driving, shooting, stealth, property ownership, businesses, interiors, police systems, mission co-operation or side activities. Store and promotional language can communicate tone and scope, but it should not be converted into a launch-verified mechanic.

How to read GTA 6 marketing safely
- Treat the setting, protagonists and release listing as confirmed because Rockstar publishes them directly.
- Treat a store-description phrase such as a statewide conspiracy as story framing, not proof of a particular mission system.
- Do not assume that every GTA Online activity will return unchanged, launch on day one or use the same progression economy.
- Do not turn an absent specification into a negative claim. “Not stated” means Rockstar has not documented it in the official material reviewed.
Multiplayer: GTA Online is proven; GTA 6 Online is not fully specified
What you can play in GTA 5 today
GTA Online supports sessions of up to 30 players, according to Rockstar’s description. Its mature ecosystem covers co-operative and competitive play: Heists for organized crews, Stunt Races, Adversary Modes, businesses, nightclubs, arcades, penthouse parties, car meetups and other social activities. The result is a broad menu for players who want progression, structured missions, competition or informal social time.
The online Heists format is particularly concrete. Rockstar describes multi-part jobs for four players, with different responsibilities ranging from hacking and stealth infiltration to driving, dogfighting, sniping and skydiving. That documented role variety gives GTA 5 Online a level of co-operative specificity that cannot yet be matched by a published GTA 6 feature list.

What Rockstar has not confirmed for GTA 6
Rockstar has not published, in the official GTA 6 materials reviewed, a complete multiplayer feature list, a maximum player count or a progression model. There is no confirmed list of GTA 6 businesses, Heists, races, competitive modes, social spaces, character-transfer rules or launch-day online services to compare with GTA Online.
That does not prove GTA 6 will lack multiplayer. It means the public evidence does not support a claim about its design. Statements that GTA 6 Online will be larger, smaller, free, subscription-based, compatible with GTA 5 characters or identical to GTA Online are predictions unless Rockstar confirms them.

Release date, platforms and buying considerations
GTA 6’s announced launch information
The Rockstar Store lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 release date. Those are the confirmed platforms and date in the official listing covered here. Retail editions, regional availability, stock, pricing and any pre-order incentives should be checked against the current store listing for your country because those details can change.
The official materials reviewed do not provide a complete GTA 6 PC release specification. Do not treat the absence of a PC listing as proof that no PC version will ever exist; it only means PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are the platforms Rockstar has listed for this release information.
Why GTA 5 still has value
GTA 5 has an established single-player campaign and a large online player base built around years of additions. Take-Two Interactive reported that GTA 5 had sold more than 190 million units in its 2026 investor release. Sales do not guarantee that every online session will be busy or that every player will enjoy the game, but they help explain why its services, guides and community activities remain extensive.

If your priority is multiplayer you can start immediately, GTA 5 is the only one of the two with a documented player limit and a published menu of Heists, races, adversary modes, businesses and social spaces. If your priority is a new campaign, new characters and a state-wide setting, GTA 6 is the relevant purchase—but its online value cannot be judged from confirmed specifications yet.
Should you buy GTA 6 or keep playing GTA 5 Online?
Keep playing GTA 5 Online if…
- You want multiplayer access now rather than waiting for a future launch.
- You specifically enjoy four-player Heists, role-based co-operation, Stunt Races or Adversary Modes.
- You have invested time in GTA Online businesses, properties, social activities or an established crew.
- You need a game whose online capacity and activity types are documented rather than announced in general terms.
Choose GTA 6 when it launches if…
- You want the new Leonida and Vice City setting rather than another return to Los Santos and Blaine County.
- You are most interested in Jason and Lucia’s two-person crime story.
- You own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S and are comfortable buying a new release before its multiplayer systems are fully documented.
- You are willing to evaluate GTA 6 Online after Rockstar publishes its player count, activities and progression details.
Keep both in your plans if your priorities differ
There is no need to choose one game as a permanent replacement before GTA 6’s online design is announced. GTA 5 answers the immediate multiplayer question with a functioning, documented ecosystem. GTA 6 answers the setting and story question with Leonida, Vice City, Jason and Lucia. Until Rockstar explains how the new online service works, the sensible comparison is established utility versus announced potential, not a verdict that one game’s multiplayer will automatically supersede the other.
What to verify before purchasing GTA 6
- Check the platform: Confirm that your console is PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, the platforms named in Rockstar’s listing.
- Check the date: The announced release date is November 19, 2026; verify the listing again if you are buying after that date or in a region with a different storefront schedule.
- Check the edition and region: Review the current retail page for included content, local pricing, stock and any pre-order terms.
- Separate campaign facts from online assumptions: Jason, Lucia, Leonida and Vice City are confirmed; player counts, Heists, businesses and progression for GTA 6 are not.
- Decide based on your immediate need: Choose GTA 5 for documented online play today, or GTA 6 for its new setting and story once you are ready for a current-generation release.

GTA 5 remains the safer multiplayer recommendation because Rockstar documents its up-to-30-player GTA Online universe, four-player Heists and broad catalogue of races, adversary modes, businesses and social spaces. GTA 6 may eventually offer a new online experience, but Rockstar has not yet published enough information to compare its player count, activities or progression fairly. Buy or keep playing according to whether you need proven online content now or want the new campaign, characters and Leonida setting.
