GTA VI moves the series from GTA V’s San Andreas and Los Santos to Vice City and the wider fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar’s public comments point to continuity in the franchise’s exaggerated satire, while the new game’s announced story centers on Jason and Lucia and a criminal conspiracy. Those details show the direction Rockstar describes—not the finished game’s full tone or every target of its jokes.
Where do GTA 6 and GTA 5 take place?
GTA V is set in the fictional state of San Andreas, with Los Santos as its central city. Rockstar’s official GTA VI page places the new game in Vice City, USA, and describes events extending across Leonida. PC Gamer characterizes Leonida as the series’ fictional Florida counterpart and reports that Rockstar has named areas beyond Vice City in its GTA 6 guide.
The contrast is therefore not simply one city replacing another: the announced frame for GTA VI includes a broader state as well as Vice City. Both settings draw on real-world places without being literal maps of those places. Promotional images and descriptions do not, by themselves, establish every playable location, boundary, or map detail.
Rockstar calls Leonida “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.” That is the company’s promotional characterization of the setting, not a neutral geographic description.

What is the story premise, and how does it compare?
Rockstar’s official synopsis follows Jason and Lucia. After a score goes wrong, they become entangled in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida and are forced to rely on each other. This gives the publicly announced setup two clear elements: a crime plot and a partnership between the protagonists.
That premise offers a point of comparison with GTA V without establishing that the games handle their characters or comedy in the same way. It also does not settle how much of GTA VI will feel like crime drama, satire, or comedy, or how the story will resolve. Rockstar’s synopsis describes the setup, not the complete plot or the balance of the finished game.

What has Rockstar said about GTA 6’s tone?
In an interview published October 4, 2026, by PC Gamer, Rockstar senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries described the team’s intention to make its version of contemporary life more than a straightforward reflection. He said: “There is a big focus on not just holding up a mirror, but on making everything satirical, larger than life, and more grotesque,” and added, “If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today’s world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face.”
These remarks establish an intended approach: an amplified, attention-grabbing version of the present. They are not a review of the finished game, and they do not guarantee that every joke will land or identify a complete list of the game’s political or cultural targets.

Rockstar writing director James Horton also described how the world should feel as players move through it: “It needs to wash over you when you’re sprinting down the busiest street in the city, hearing snatches of a hundred different conversations as you go.” That points to a goal of environmental texture—details and fragments of conversation encountered in motion—rather than a claim about how every scene will play.

The clearest documented comparison is continuity in the series’ interest in contemporary life, not proof that the two games will make the same jokes. PC Gamer’s report cites GTA V’s mockery of invasive social media and of people who distrust doctors. For GTA VI, Rockstar staff describe a desire to push its portrayal of the present toward the exaggerated and grotesque.

Those examples allow a grounded comparison: GTA V satirized specific social behaviors, while Rockstar says GTA VI will continue the broader practice of heightening modern life for satirical effect. The available remarks do not establish that the next game will be more political, more serious, or aimed at any particular issue. Nor do a handful of examples define either game’s complete range of targets.

- The finished balance of comedy and drama: the official synopsis gives a crime-conspiracy premise, while staff remarks outline satirical intent; neither specifies the experience’s overall pacing or emotional balance.
