Red Dead Redemption 2 is a released, playable portrait of the 1899 American frontier; GTA 6 is an upcoming contemporary crime story set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. Rockstar’s announced premise and attributed pre-release details point to very different settings and environmental identities, but GTA 6 has not launched as of October 4, 2026. That means its world cannot yet be fairly ranked against RDR2 through firsthand play.

How are the GTA 6 and RDR2 maps different?
RDR2’s frontier is built around the late-19th-century American heartland
RDR2’s setting supports an outlaw story in which the gang is on the run, and the publisher’s descriptions evoke a broad range of frontier environments: snow-covered mountains, southern swamps, farms, settlements, and outposts. The contrast between those landscapes is part of the game’s established identity. Rockstar’s store also lists online roles and activities such as bounty hunting, trading, collecting, moonshining, and naturalism; those are Red Dead Online features and should not be presented as a list of story-mode activities.

GTA 6 turns toward a contemporary, Florida-inspired state
GTA 6 moves from a historical frontier to the modern crime setting of Vice City and Leonida. TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 account of Game Informer’s feature identifies six primary regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. It also reports Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut describing the new world as the studio’s largest “by some degree.” That is an attributed qualitative claim, not a published map-area measurement or proof of how large the playable world feels.
Is GTA 6 bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2?
There is not enough comparable area data in the cited material to answer with a reliable multiplier or a measured map-size verdict. The October 2026 report says Rockstar characterizes GTA 6 as its largest world, but gives no apples-to-apples land-area figures for GTA 6 and RDR2. A region count also does not establish square mileage, density, or how much of a map players can explore. Treat any precise “times bigger” comparison as unverified unless it is supported by comparable official measurements.

What can you do in the GTA 6 open world?
Before release, the grounded answer is narrower than a full activity guide: Rockstar has announced a single-player story following Jason and Lucia, set in Vice City and Leonida, and its preview material has drawn attention to the world’s regions, wildlife, and weather. Those disclosures do not establish a complete list of player activities or confirm how specific systems work in practice.
What preview reporting says about wildlife and weather
TechRadar reports that Rockstar’s 2026 Game Informer feature cited 170 animal species, including more than 60 bird types and over 30 land mammals. The same report attributes a combined total of over 600,000 NPC animations to Rockstar. These are reported pre-release figures, not independently verified counts from the released game.

TechRadar also quotes Rockstar vice president of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd describing a re-engineered weather system intended to make weather more localized and persistent. That signals a development goal; it does not by itself confirm how weather will behave across the final game or what gameplay effects it will have.
Which game should you play now?
If you want to play one of these worlds now, RDR2 is the available choice: Rockstar’s store lists its PS4 edition, and the game is already released. GTA 6 is still upcoming on the date covered here, so its actual exploration, activity variety, and moment-to-moment world behavior cannot yet be evaluated through released gameplay.

For GTA 6, Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement gives a November 19, 2026 release date for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Support says the boxed version contains a download code and no disc; check the official platforms, editions, and versions page for format details.

RDR2’s frontier world is an established part of a released game; GTA 6’s Leonida is currently known through official announcements and attributed previews. The meaningful contrast is historical outlaw country versus contemporary, Florida-inspired crime fiction—not a defensible claim that one map is already better, more immersive, or a specific amount larger. A direct gameplay verdict must wait until GTA 6 is released.
