These are not interchangeable versions of the same open-world formula. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a finished tragedy about Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in 1899. GTA VI is an unreleased, two-character crime partnership set in fictional Leonida and Vice City. The right choice depends less on which game is “bigger” and more on whether you want a story you can finish today or a new Rockstar campaign whose final qualities cannot yet be judged.

What each game is actually about
Red Dead Redemption 2: the end of an era
Rockstar places Red Dead Redemption 2 in America in 1899, when the Wild West is giving way to a more organized and heavily policed society. Lawmen pursue the remaining outlaw gangs, and those who refuse to surrender or adapt are killed. The historical setting is not decorative: the gang’s way of life is becoming impossible, so every argument about loyalty, survival and leadership is also an argument about whether the group’s ideals can survive the modern world.
The story begins after a robbery goes terribly wrong in the western town of Blackwater. Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee, robbing, stealing and fighting across America’s heartland while internal divisions grow. Arthur was raised inside the gang, which makes his conflict unusually personal. He is not deciding whether to join a criminal group; he is deciding how much of himself he can sacrifice to the group that formed him.
Arthur’s central problem is the tension between his ideals and his loyalty to the gang. That gives the campaign a clear, character-led shape. The setting, missions and relationships continually pressure him to decide what kind of man he wants to be as the gang’s future narrows. Because the campaign is complete, you can experience the entire progression, including its consequences, without waiting for later chapters or post-launch clarification.
Grand Theft Auto VI: a partnership under pressure
Grand Theft Auto VI moves to a contemporary crime world in Rockstar’s fictional state of Leonida, including Vice City. Its published premise follows Jason and Lucia, who already understand that the odds are stacked against them. An easy score goes wrong, placing them in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. They are forced to rely on one another if they want to survive.

That premise points to a different kind of emotional engine from Arthur’s solitary arc. The key relationship is the partnership between Jason and Lucia: trust, dependence and shared risk. Rockstar’s Trailer 2 description calls the conspiracy the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, framing Leonida’s bright contemporary surface against criminal danger underneath it.
Everything beyond the officially published setting, protagonists, premise, launch date and platforms remains unconfirmed here. You cannot responsibly judge the complete campaign’s length, mission variety, ending, character development or final tone before release. The two-person structure is clear; the quality and shape of the finished story are not.
Story structure: one long arc or two-person chemistry?
| Story question | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Grand Theft Auto VI |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang | Jason and Lucia |
| Core dramatic tension | Arthur’s ideals versus loyalty to the gang that raised him | A criminal partnership trying to survive a conspiracy |
| Campaign status | Complete and playable | Unreleased; full campaign not yet evaluable |
| Historical or contemporary frame | America in 1899, as the Wild West ends | Contemporary Leonida, including Vice City |
Why Arthur’s single protagonist matters
A single central protagonist lets Red Dead Redemption 2 build almost every major question around Arthur. The gang’s movements, conflicts and losses matter because Arthur interprets them. His history with the group gives ordinary choices emotional weight: loyalty is not an abstract virtue when abandoning the gang means abandoning the people who raised him.
This structure suits players who want a focused dramatic arc. You follow one man’s changing understanding of his world rather than dividing attention between multiple playable leads. The campaign’s tragedy emerges from the collision between Arthur’s personal conscience and the gang’s increasingly desperate demands.

Jason and Lucia create room for contrast and cooperation. A partnership can make criminal decisions feel relational: one character may need the other’s skills, protection or trust. Rockstar has established that an easy score leads them into a conspiracy across Leonida, but has not published enough campaign detail to say how often control changes, how their arcs diverge or how their relationship resolves.
Choose this structure if the idea of a shared rise-or-fall story appeals to you more than a single-character tragedy. Do not choose it on the assumption that it will reproduce the exact character rhythm of Red Dead Redemption 2; the published premise describes a partnership, not the final form of every mission or scene.
Tone and setting: reflective western decline versus modern crime
The mood of Red Dead Redemption 2
The 1899 setting makes decline unavoidable. Lawmen are hunting the last outlaw gangs, technology and institutions are closing in, and the gang’s mobility is no longer enough to guarantee safety. The result is a reflective western drama in which survival and loyalty constantly collide with the recognition that the gang’s era is ending.
Its emotional vocabulary is built around changing ideals, personal loyalty and the cost of remaining with a failing group. If you prefer stories that take their time with a character’s relationships and moral choices, this is the stronger fit. The western setting also gives the story a specific historical direction: the world is changing whether Arthur accepts it or not.
The mood Rockstar has established for GTA VI
Leonida and Vice City provide a contemporary crime environment rather than a historical frontier. Rockstar’s official material presents a sunny, recognizable surface that hides dangerous criminal networks. Jason and Lucia are not simply escaping one failed job; they become entangled in a conspiracy spanning the state.
Rank #3
That setup supports a sharper contrast between public glamour and private danger. It is appropriate for players who want present-day criminal pressure, fast-moving stakes and a story driven by two people whose survival depends on cooperation. Whether the finished game is more satirical, more serious or balanced between those modes should remain an open question until Rockstar releases it.
Availability, platforms and timing
| Game | Current release information | Platforms documented by Rockstar | What that means for your decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Released worldwide October 26, 2018; PC release announced for November 5, 2019 | PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC | You can begin the finished story now. |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | Currently scheduled for November 19, 2026 | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S | You must wait for launch, and the announced platforms require current-generation consoles. |
Red Dead Redemption 2 launched worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018. Rockstar later announced the PC version for November 5, 2019. Red Dead Online was included with the release, although this comparison concerns the single-player stories.
Rockstar’s current support documentation lists November 19, 2026 for Grand Theft Auto VI and documents PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The cited announcements do not include a PC launch. Therefore, do not buy or upgrade a PC on the assumption that a PC edition will be available on day one. A later PC announcement is possible, but it is not an announced fact in the material available for this comparison.

Which game has the better story?
There is no honest universal winner because the games offer different kinds of stories, and one of them has not released. If “better” means a complete campaign with an established beginning, development and conclusion, Red Dead Redemption 2 wins by default: it is available and its character-led tragedy can be judged in full.
If “better” means a contemporary crime partnership with two central characters, Grand Theft Auto VI is the more relevant match, but that is a preference for its premise rather than a verdict on execution. Rockstar has not published enough to compare its final writing, pacing, endings or character development with Arthur Morgan’s completed arc.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Take-Two Interactive said in 2023 that the Red Dead Redemption series had sold more than 81 million units worldwide and described Red Dead Redemption 2 as a new benchmark in fidelity and immersion. That figure is for the series, not solely for Red Dead Redemption 2, and it is evidence of broad commercial reach rather than proof that every player will prefer its story.
Choose based on the kind of player you are
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want a serious single-player campaign now
- You want a finished story rather than a launch promise.
- You prefer one protagonist whose decisions and loyalties organize the drama.
- You are interested in the end of the Wild West and a historical setting.
- You want to play on PC today or on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
- You value a tragedy about survival, changing ideals and loyalty to a failing group.
This is the straightforward recommendation for anyone who has not played either game and wants something substantial immediately. You do not need to understand Grand Theft Auto VI before starting it, and waiting for an unreleased title would postpone a complete Rockstar story that already matches the serious single-player brief.
Choose Grand Theft Auto VI if its premise is the deciding factor
- You specifically want a contemporary crime setting in Leonida and Vice City.
- You are more excited by Jason and Lucia’s partnership than by a western gang story.
- You own, or plan to use, a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- You are comfortable waiting for the announced November 19, 2026 launch.
- You accept that reviews and the finished campaign are not available yet.
This choice is about anticipation and setting. It is not a claim that Grand Theft Auto VI has already demonstrated a better story; its campaign still has to be released and evaluated.
Choose both, in sequence, if you want the clearest contrast
Playing Red Dead Redemption 2 now and approaching Grand Theft Auto VI later gives you two distinct Rockstar approaches: a completed historical tragedy followed by an unreleased contemporary crime partnership. The games do not require a shared story order, so playing Arthur’s campaign first will not spoil Jason and Lucia’s premise.

Wait only if the modern Vice City premise is more important to you than playing a complete story immediately. There is no story prerequisite that makes Red Dead Redemption 2 mandatory before Grand Theft Auto VI; they are separate settings, casts and story worlds in the information Rockstar has published.

For most undecided players, the practical answer is to play Red Dead Redemption 2 now and reassess Grand Theft Auto VI when launch reviews and final platform information exist. This avoids treating trailers as a substitute for a finished campaign. It also lets you decide based on what you actually enjoy: Arthur’s single-character tragedy or the Jason-and-Lucia partnership described for Leonida.

If your only available system is a PC, the decision is even clearer under the current announcements. Red Dead Redemption 2 has a documented PC release; Rockstar has not announced a PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI in the cited materials. Do not infer a date or platform from industry habits.
What to buy while waiting for GTA VI
The game
If you want a story rather than a speculative preorder, buy Red Dead Redemption 2 for a supported platform and start Arthur Morgan’s campaign. It is the only one of these two choices that is currently a complete, playable single-player experience. Confirm the edition and platform at the retailer you use, because stock and prices vary by region and can change over time.
The official guide
Rockstar names the Piggyback Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide as an official companion. It is most useful for players who want to explore thoroughly, locate optional content or keep track of the world without relying on spoiler-heavy online searches. Use it as a reference after deciding how much discovery you want to preserve; consulting a guide from the start can reduce the surprise of finding systems and encounters naturally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat not to assume
- Do not assume Grand Theft Auto VI has a confirmed PC version or PC date.
- Do not assume the final campaign will match trailer footage in length, structure or tone.
- Do not assume prices, editions or launch inventory will remain unchanged through November 2026.
- Do not treat the 81-million figure as sales of Red Dead Redemption 2 alone; Take-Two reported it for the Red Dead Redemption series.
Important unknowns about GTA VI
Rockstar has confirmed the setting, protagonists, broad criminal premise, launch date and launch platforms described above. It has not established the information a careful comparison would need for a final quality verdict: campaign length, number of missions, detailed mechanics, ending, performance targets, price, edition contents and a PC release date are not stated in the cited material.
The second trailer was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5, which identifies the source hardware for that footage. It does not by itself establish final performance specifications for every platform, nor does it guarantee that every visual or sequence will appear unchanged in the shipped game.
That uncertainty is not a reason to dismiss the game. It is a reason to separate what Rockstar has announced from what fans hope it will deliver. You can be excited about Jason and Lucia’s premise while still choosing Red Dead Redemption 2 for an immediate, evidence-based purchase.
A decision checklist
- Choose your time horizon. If you want to play this week, select Red Dead Redemption 2. If you are planning for November 19, 2026, consider Grand Theft Auto VI after confirming current launch information.
- Choose your setting. Pick 1899 America and the fading Wild West for Arthur’s story; pick contemporary Leonida and Vice City for Jason and Lucia’s crime story.
- Choose your character structure. Select the single, loyalty-driven Arthur arc or wait for the two-person partnership Rockstar has described.
- Check your hardware. Red Dead Redemption 2 is documented on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Grand Theft Auto VI is currently documented on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Separate certainty from expectation. Treat Arthur’s completed campaign as established. Treat any judgment about Grand Theft Auto VI beyond its published premise and platforms as provisional until release.
Bottom line
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the right choice for a serious Rockstar story you can play now: a finished western tragedy centered on Arthur Morgan, the Van der Linde gang and the conflict between loyalty and changing ideals. Grand Theft Auto VI is the right choice for players drawn specifically to Jason and Lucia, contemporary Vice City and a criminal conspiracy in Leonida who are willing to wait for the announced November 19, 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Until that campaign is released, it is possible to compare their premises and audiences, but not to declare its completed story superior.
