In the currently shown Grand Theft Auto VI police system, the wanted level is the star meter for the intensity of the active law-enforcement response. Heat is a separate recognition layer: it records what police know about Jason and Lucia and can remain dangerous after a direct pursuit is broken. You can lose immediate contact while still being recognized because of your car, clothes, face or the fact that both protagonists are together.
Wanted level vs. heat at a glance
The two meters answer different questions. Wanted stars describe what the police are doing right now. Heat describes what the police still know about you when that immediate chase is no longer continuous.

Think of wanted level as the present-tense chase and heat as the case file that has not been forgotten. A low or disappearing star display does not necessarily mean that every identifying clue has been erased.

What the wanted level means in GTA 6
Stars represent the active response
The wanted level is the familiar star meter used to communicate how intense the current police response is. In the footage shown so far, the stars sit above the smaller recognition indicators. When a crime is reported, the meter communicates the immediate escalation that follows: police are searching, pursuing or otherwise responding to the protagonists.

- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
A crime is not automatically treated as reported the instant it happens. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said that an incident must be witnessed or trigger an alarm before it is reported. That distinction matters because an unnoticed act can remain outside the active wanted system, while a witness or alarm can begin the escalation represented by the stars.
Six stars are shown in the current footage
Rockstar’s 2026 gameplay reveal shows a six-star wanted meter. That is one star more than the five-star maximum used in Grand Theft Auto V. The footage establishes that six stars exist in the displayed interface; it does not establish exactly which crimes produce each level or what special response is guaranteed at the top.
Reports from GamesRadar and GTA Intel describe the six-star meter as a confirmed feature of the shown build. They do not provide a complete rules table. It is therefore accurate to say that the sixth star is visible, but premature to claim that it always means a particular unit, weapon, search radius or military deployment.

The stars are not a complete record of everything police have learned. They show the intensity of the active response, not every clue that can survive a broken line of sight. The exact threshold for each star, the duration of a search, the way a level decays and the response associated with six stars remain unpublished.
What heat means in GTA 6
Heat is recognition that can persist
Heat is the recognition layer beneath the stars. It represents details that can allow law enforcement to continue identifying the suspects even after the immediate chase has been interrupted. The point of the system is persistence: police are not required to forget everything the moment the player escapes visual contact.
GamesRadar reported that Rockstar wanted police to have “more persistent memory.” Nelson explained the design goal this way: “We wanted to get past that thing we used to have where you could lose the cops instantaneously, and then they forget about you instantly. And we wanted them to have a bit more persistent memory.”

- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
That statement describes the design intention, not a published timer. Heat can persist, but Rockstar has not documented how long each recognition state lasts or precisely what event clears it.
The recognition indicators shown beneath the stars
The current sequence displays smaller indicators for four kinds of information:
- Clothing: what the suspects are wearing.
- Face: whether the protagonists’ faces remain recognizable.
- Vehicle: the car associated with the incident.
- Group configuration: whether Jason and Lucia are together.
These icons are not a second star scale. They are clues police can use to recognize the people involved. The practical consequence is that losing the car or breaking a chase may solve one recognition problem without solving the others.
Heat is not the same as a wanted level
A player can have no visible direct pursuit and still carry recognition risk. Conversely, a high-star chase is an immediate problem even if changing clothes or vehicles would eventually reduce the chance of being identified. Wanted level asks how strongly police are responding now; heat asks what they can remember and match later.
How the two systems work together
The footage supports a sequence rather than two unrelated meters. The following model explains the relationship without inventing hidden thresholds:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- An incident occurs. A crime must be witnessed or activate an alarm before it is reported, according to Nelson’s explanation quoted by GamesRadar.
- The active response begins. The star meter communicates the current wanted intensity. Police can pursue, search or respond according to the situation shown in the game.
- Police collect identifying information. The HUD can show clothing, face, vehicle and whether the two protagonists are together.
- You break immediate contact. Driving out of sight, using the environment and avoiding continued detection are the counterplay associated with the wanted level.
- Recognition may remain. Even after the direct chase is interrupted, the stored details can leave Jason, Lucia or their vehicle vulnerable to recognition. Changing those details is the counterplay shown for heat.
This is why “I lost the cops” and “I lost all risk” are different statements in the new system. The first concerns the active pursuit. The second would require the recognition layer to stop identifying the suspects, and the available footage does not promise that this happens immediately.

How to read the GTA 6 police HUD
| HUD element | Reader-facing meaning | Best immediate question |
|---|---|---|
| Stars | Current intensity of the active law-enforcement response | Are police still actively pursuing or searching for me? |
| Clothing indicator | Police may recognize the outfit associated with the incident | Am I still wearing the same identifiable clothing? |
| Face indicator | The protagonists’ faces remain part of the recognition information | Would a face covering or appearance change remove this clue? |
| Vehicle indicator | The current or previously identified car remains linked to the suspects | Am I still using the vehicle police saw? |
| Together indicator | Police can associate Jason and Lucia as a pair | Are both protagonists still presenting the same group configuration? |
The indicators should be read as information available to police, not as a published checklist of guaranteed actions. Rockstar has shown the categories and the intended counterplay, but not every rule governing when an icon appears, disappears or changes state.
How to lose a wanted level
Start with the immediate pursuit
Wanted-level evasion is still about breaking the active response. The footage does not publish a guaranteed escape recipe, a universal search radius or an exact timer, so the safest guidance is procedural rather than numerical:
- Stop adding new evidence. Continuing the same crime or triggering another alarm can keep the active response alive. Get away from the incident instead of escalating it.
- Break direct contact. Use streets, alleys, buildings and changes in direction to prevent police from maintaining a clear pursuit. The point is to interrupt the immediate connection, not merely to drive farther in a straight line.
- Use the environment intelligently. Routes that separate you from the searching units are more useful than open roads that leave you visible. The exact effectiveness of any hiding place has not been documented.
- Watch the stars and the recognition indicators separately. A reduction in stars indicates a change in the active response. It does not prove that the vehicle, clothing, face or group clues have been forgotten.
- Reassess before returning to public view. If recognition indicators remain, moving back into the same kind of environment or using the same vehicle can expose you again even when the direct chase has stopped.
There is no confirmed number of seconds after which every wanted level disappears. Claims about fixed timers, guaranteed hiding spots or a universal route to zero stars should be treated as unverified until Rockstar publishes the rules.
Why breaking line of sight may not finish the job
Older series behavior often rewarded a clean break because police would forget the player quickly. GTA 6’s shown design is intended to avoid that instant reset. Breaking contact remains relevant to the star meter, but the recognition layer means that the same appearance or vehicle can continue to matter after the pursuit itself has paused.
How to lose heat in GTA 6
Change the vehicle police recognize
The gameplay sequence presents a vehicle swap as a way to remove the vehicle recognition shown in the HUD. If police have associated the incident with one car, leaving that car changes one of the clues they can match. This does not establish that a vehicle change clears clothing, face or group recognition at the same time.
Change clothing or cover the face
The displayed clothing and face categories indicate that appearance is part of the counterplay. Changing clothes can remove or alter the outfit police saw; changing facial presentation can address the face clue. The footage demonstrates the idea of changing appearance, but Rockstar has not specified which garments qualify, how quickly an alteration takes effect or whether every disguise works in every context.

Change the group configuration
The HUD also tracks whether Jason and Lucia are together. That means separating the protagonists, or otherwise changing the configuration police recognize, is part of the demonstrated heat counterplay. The game has not published a rule saying that separation alone clears every other indicator, so treat it as one targeted change rather than a guaranteed full reset.

Use layered counterplay instead of one switch
Because the indicators cover different clues, the logical approach is to address the clues that remain visible rather than relying on one action. A vehicle swap can solve the vehicle association; an appearance change can address clothing or face; a change in who is together can address the group clue. The available footage supports these as separate levers, not as a documented order or timer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practical situations and what they mean
You escape in the same car
The stars may stop representing a continuous chase while the vehicle indicator remains relevant. In that situation, you have interrupted the immediate pursuit but have not necessarily removed the most obvious link between the suspects and the incident. A later encounter could still be affected by that recognition, although the exact trigger conditions are not published.
You change cars but keep the same appearance
The vehicle clue changes, but clothing and face recognition may remain. This is a partial heat response, not proof that every police memory has been cleared. The HUD categories are useful precisely because they show that one change does not automatically equal a complete identity reset.
You change clothes but remain with the same partner
The clothing clue may no longer match the original report, while the face and together indicators can still connect the protagonists to it. The shown system treats the group configuration as its own recognition detail, so changing one appearance element should not be read as removing the others.
You split Jason and Lucia
The group clue is the part most directly affected. However, the car, clothing and face information can still exist independently. Separation changes one relationship police track; it is not a confirmed method for clearing all heat.

You never trigger an alarm or witness
If an incident is not witnessed and does not activate an alarm, Nelson’s explanation indicates that it may not be reported in the first place. That is different from losing heat after a reported crime. Once police have received a report and collected identifying information, the persistence system becomes relevant.
What six stars do—and do not—tell us
The sixth star is a visible expansion of the familiar meter. It tells players that the active response has more displayed gradation than in Grand Theft Auto V. It does not, by itself, reveal a new agency, a specific weapon set or a guaranteed endgame response.
Rockstar has not published:
- Which exact crimes produce each of the six levels.
- The numerical threshold between one star and the next.
- How long each star level lasts or how quickly it decays.
- The exact response associated with the sixth star.
- The search radius, patrol behavior or deployment rules for any level.
- Whether every heat indicator follows the same decay schedule.
Until those details are documented, six stars should be treated as a confirmed HUD level, not as a complete tactical specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon mistakes when interpreting wanted level and heat
- Calling them two names for one meter. Stars and recognition indicators communicate different states.
- Assuming no stars means no recognition. Persistent memory is the central reason heat exists separately.
- Assuming one disguise clears everything. Vehicle, clothing, face and group status are shown as distinct categories.
- Treating six stars as a published response table. The level is shown, but its exact consequences are not.
- Quoting an exact escape timer. Rockstar has not released durations for the star meter or each heat indicator.
- Promising a guaranteed hiding spot. No universal escape location or recipe has been documented.
- Confusing an unreported crime with cleared heat. Avoiding a witness or alarm happens before a report; clearing recognition happens after police have information.
Where to play Grand Theft Auto VI
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page places the game in Leonida, including Vice City, and lists PlayStation 5 among the platforms. The page also displays preorder editions and bonuses. Edition contents, availability and release details can vary by region, so check the live official listing for the market in which you intend to buy.
For players planning around the police mechanics, the important point is that the footage discussed here represents the system currently shown by Rockstar. The final release may clarify, refine or change the thresholds and persistence rules that are not yet documented.
What is confirmed and what remains open
| Confirmed from shown material or attributed statements | Still unconfirmed |
|---|---|
| The HUD separates six wanted stars from smaller recognition indicators. | The exact crime required for every star level. |
| A crime must be witnessed or trigger an alarm before it is reported, according to Rob Nelson’s statement quoted by GamesRadar. | The exact duration and decay of each star level. |
| Recognition categories shown include clothing, face, vehicle and whether Jason and Lucia are together. | The precise duration and clearing conditions for each heat indicator. |
| Changing the vehicle removes the vehicle recognition shown in the sequence; changing appearance is presented as counterplay. | The response associated with the sixth star. |
| Rockstar’s stated design goal is more persistent police memory after direct pursuit is broken. | Guaranteed search radii, military deployment, timers and escape recipes. |
The practical reading is straightforward: use stars to judge the immediate chase, and use heat indicators to judge how recognizable you still are. That distinction is the major change demonstrated by GTA 6’s police system.
