That restores the series’ traditional maximum after GTA V’s five-star cap, but the game’s most important change is how police identify you: a crime must be witnessed, or an alarm must report it, and officers can retain clues about your vehicle, clothes, face and whether Jason and Lucia are together. The reliable escape plan is to break line of sight, leave the car for alleys on foot, change vehicles or appearance, and separate the two protagonists when the police are tracking them as a pair.
GTA VI wanted levels: what is confirmed
Rockstar’s 2026 Extended Look, reported by GamesRadar, showed the wanted display reaching six stars. The same report described a system built around witnesses, alarms and several identifying leads rather than an automatic police response to every crime. The practical details below separate what Rockstar has demonstrated or explained from what remains unknown.

| Question | What the available material establishes |
|---|---|
| Maximum wanted level | Six stars in GTA VI. GTA V used a five-star maximum. |
| How police are alerted | A person must witness the crime, or an alarm must be triggered and reported. |
| What can identify you | Clothes, face, vehicle, and whether Jason and Lucia are together. The footage displayed four corresponding recognition icons. |
| Ways to remove a lead | Changing vehicles can remove the vehicle lead; changing visible appearance can reduce the clothing or appearance match; splitting the pair can reduce what police can match. |
| Best city escape tactic at about three stars | Leave the streets and move through alleys on foot, especially when a vehicle chase is difficult. |
| Meaning of red stars | Footage suggests an active search after direct contact is broken, but Rockstar has not published the exact rule. |
| Police response at four, five and six stars | Not shown or described in the cited material. |
How a wanted level begins
A witness or alarm is required
Rob Nelson explained the rule directly: “The wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.” That means the first question after a crime is not simply how serious it was. It is whether anyone saw it or whether a security system transmitted an alert.

A crime that no one witnesses and no alarm reports may not immediately produce a police response. Conversely, a relatively small offense can become a chase if a bystander sees it or an alarm is activated. The system therefore creates a short window in which avoiding a report matters as much as outrunning officers after the report.

Police can keep several identifying clues
The Extended Look report identifies four kinds of information police may retain:
- Vehicle: the car or bike associated with the incident.
- Clothes: visible clothing that officers can match during a search.
- Face: the character’s facial appearance as a recognition clue.
- Pairing: the fact that Jason and Lucia are together.
These are separate leads rather than one permanent “wanted” identity. A change that removes one clue does not automatically erase the others. For example, abandoning a known car may eliminate the vehicle match while leaving police able to recognize clothing or a face. Likewise, separating Jason and Lucia can reduce the information officers can match, but it does not make either character invisible by itself.
Why the Jason-and-Lucia pairing matters
The pairing icon is a distinctive part of the demonstrated system. Police can treat the protagonists as a linked target when they are together. Splitting them changes what officers are searching for and can make it harder to match the original report. This is especially useful when both characters are being tracked as one moving group.
How to lose the police in GTA VI
The following sequence uses only tactics that have been demonstrated or specifically recommended in the available material. The order is practical: first stop officers from seeing you, then remove the clues they can use.
1. Break direct line of sight
Turn away from the obvious pursuit route and put solid cover between you and the police. Alleys, side streets, garages and other enclosed or obstructed spaces are more useful than a long straight road. The objective is not merely to create distance; it is to stop a current observer from maintaining visual contact.
Once the direct view is broken, do not immediately return to the main road. Police may search from the last place they saw you, so crossing back into that area can recreate the pursuit before the search has cooled.
2. Leave the vehicle when a city chase reaches about three stars
Nelson’s practical advice is specific: “If you get three stars in the city, it can sometimes be challenging to get away in a vehicle, unless it’s a very fast vehicle or a sports bike. Your best option is usually to do this – get off the streets and on foot into the alleys.”

Use the car to reach cover, not necessarily to complete the escape. A vehicle keeps you conspicuous on broad streets and gives police a large, easily tracked target. At roughly three stars in an urban area, stopping in a concealed location and continuing on foot through alleys can be more effective than trying to win a prolonged road chase.

3. Change vehicles
Police can retain the vehicle associated with the report. Switching to another vehicle removes that particular lead, provided you are not seen during the change. The swap works best after line of sight has already been broken; changing cars in an exposed location simply gives officers a new sighting and another clue.
Do not treat a vehicle change as a complete reset. Clothes, face and the Jason-and-Lucia pairing are independent recognition information, so keep using cover and avoid another direct sighting while the search remains active.
4. Change visible appearance
Because clothes are one of the displayed recognition categories, changing clothing or another obvious part of your appearance can reduce the chance of a match during the search. Make the change away from police view, ideally after reaching cover. Appearance changes are most valuable when officers have already recorded what you were wearing; they do not replace the need to avoid being seen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Split Jason and Lucia
If the police are matching the protagonists as a pair, separate them after breaking contact. The report says splitting up can reduce what police can match. This gives each character a different route and removes the single combined target that officers were following.
Separation is a tactical trade-off. You lose the convenience of moving together and must control two escape paths, but the police also have less paired information to work with. Use it when staying together makes the group easy to identify.
6. Avoid a renewed sighting during the search
After contact is broken, the danger changes from an active chase to being found again. A fresh sighting can restore active pursuit, so stay off exposed roads, avoid crossing the last known location and do not assume that a temporary change in the display means the search has ended.
The safest sequence is therefore: break sight, move into cover, leave the vehicle if the urban chase is around three stars, change the vehicle and appearance when possible, split the pair if they are being tracked together, and remain concealed until the search no longer produces a new sighting.

White stars and red stars
An independent guide examining Rockstar’s 26-minute Extended Look reported that the footage changes white stars to red after direct contact is broken. It interprets the red display as an active search rather than a direct chase. That interpretation fits the visible transition, but Rockstar has not published the exact rule for the color change, how long it lasts, or which actions end it.

Use the color change as a visual warning, not as a guaranteed all-clear. Even if the stars are red, a new sighting can put the police back into an active pursuit. The confirmed mechanic is the loss and possible restoration of visual contact; the precise user-interface logic behind the colors remains unpublished.
The four recognition icons
The footage and report identify icons for clothes, face, vehicle and the fact that Jason and Lucia are together. Read them as information police may be using, not as a checklist that must always be cleared in a particular order. Changing a vehicle affects the vehicle clue. Altering appearance affects visible clothing or other appearance information. Splitting the protagonists affects the pairing clue. None of those actions guarantees that the remaining clues have vanished.
What happens at four, five and six stars?
Rockstar’s demonstrated footage reached three stars. The cited material does not show or describe the police units, tactics or escalation used at four, five or six stars. That means the exact top-end response in GTA VI is currently unconfirmed.
| Wanted level | Evidence available | What you should not assume |
|---|---|---|
| One to three stars | The Extended Look demonstrated the system through three stars, including the witness-or-alarm trigger, recognition clues and city escape advice. | Do not assume that every pursuit behaves identically at each of these levels; the footage does not establish every threshold or timing rule. |
| Four stars | Not shown or described in the cited sources. | No specific helicopter, tactical team or other unit is confirmed for this level. |
| Five stars | Not shown or described in the cited sources. | Do not import a response pattern from an older GTA game as GTA VI fact. |
| Six stars | The six-star meter is confirmed, but the exact response at its maximum is not. | Helicopters, SWAT, military or NOOSE-style involvement has not been confirmed for GTA VI in the cited material. |
Older GTA games used different high-level responses, so memories of those games are not reliable evidence of GTA VI behavior. Until Rockstar details the upper tiers, the only accurate statement is that six stars exist and the response beyond the demonstrated footage is unknown.
GTA VI compared with GTA V’s wanted meter
The clearest numerical change is the maximum: GTA VI returns to six stars, while GTA V capped the meter at five. The newer system also explicitly exposes recognition information that matters during an escape.
| Comparison point | GTA VI | GTA V |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum stars | Six | Five |
| Witness or alarm requirement | Confirmed by Rob Nelson’s explanation | Not established by the cited material |
| Face, clothes and vehicle as displayed recognition leads | Shown or described in the GTA VI report | Not established by the cited material |
| Partner-pair recognition | Police can retain whether Jason and Lucia are together | Not applicable to the cited GTA V comparison |
| Changing vehicles or splitting up to remove a lead | Described as ways to reduce what police can match | Not established by the cited material |
| Four-to-six-star response units | Not confirmed | Not used as evidence for GTA VI |
The useful lesson is not simply that GTA VI adds one star. Its wanted system gives players several identifiable clues to manage, so escaping is presented as an information problem as well as a driving challenge.

Three stars are the highest level directly addressed by Nelson’s advice. If the chase is in a dense city area, apply the mechanics as a single decision process rather than repeatedly circling the same blocks.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose cover immediately. Aim for an alley, side street, garage or another obstruction instead of an open arterial road.
- Break the view. Once officers cannot see you, stop exposing yourself by re-entering the route where contact was lost.
- Abandon the car if it is keeping you visible. Continue on foot through alleys when the vehicle cannot shake the pursuit.
- Remove recorded identifiers. Change vehicles and, when available, change clothes or other visible appearance away from police view.
- Separate the protagonists when they are being matched together. Use different paths rather than presenting one paired target.
- Stay hidden during the search. A renewed sighting can restore the active chase, so wait for a safe opportunity instead of testing the boundary immediately.
This plan does not depend on an assumed special unit or a particular number of patrol cars. It uses the confirmed relationships between visibility, remembered clues and the search state.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming a crime automatically summons police
The system requires a witness or an alarm report. If you are trying to prevent escalation, identify who can see the action and whether a security system can report it before committing to the crime.
Driving indefinitely after three stars
Nelson specifically warns that a city chase can be difficult in a vehicle at about three stars unless you have a very fast vehicle or sports bike. Switch to cover and foot travel instead of treating speed as the only answer.
Changing cars in view of officers
A vehicle swap only helps if it removes the old vehicle lead without creating a new sighting. Break line of sight first, then make the change under cover.
Believing one disguise clears every clue
Police may retain separate information about clothes, face, vehicle and the pair. Altering one category does not prove that the others are gone.
Treating red stars as a guaranteed escape
The red-star reading comes from footage interpretation, not a published Rockstar rule. Continue avoiding visibility until the search is genuinely safe; a renewed sighting can reactivate pursuit.
Using old GTA escalation charts as GTA VI facts
The six-star maximum is confirmed, but the response at four through six stars is not. Do not promise helicopters, SWAT, military or NOOSE-style units unless Rockstar later documents them for GTA VI.
Release and platform context
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 release date. The page also includes pre-order links, official premium apparel, collectibles and a Vice City Collection. The wanted-system behavior described above comes from the 2026 Extended Look and accompanying reporting; it should not be treated as a complete specification of every mission, difficulty setting or post-launch update.

For now, the dependable strategy is to manage sight lines and identifiers, not to rely on a presumed maximum-level force response. Six stars tell you the meter has reached its ceiling; they do not yet reveal what Rockstar will deploy there.
