GTA IV for Windows is currently sold and supported as Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition. It includes the original Liberty City campaign plus The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. You can obtain it through the Rockstar Games ecosystem or Steam, but even a Steam installation depends on the Rockstar Games Launcher and a Rockstar Games account.
The important limitation is that the modern PC edition is primarily single-player. Games for Windows Live, official multiplayer, and leaderboards were discontinued during the 2020 transition. For a current installation, use Rockstar’s newer requirements rather than old listings: Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB of RAM, a 512 MB graphics card, and 22 GB of storage are the published minimums.

What GTA IV for Windows is called now
The original PC release is no longer the product name to look for when buying or installing the game. The current Windows product is Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition. Rockstar lists it for Windows, Steam lists the edition with a March 24, 2020 release date, and Rockstar’s supported-titles documentation identifies the Complete Edition as a supported PC title.

- Grand Theft Auto IV, with Niko Bellic’s main Liberty City campaign.
- The Lost and Damned, centered on Johnny Klebitz and the Lost biker gang.
- The Ballad of Gay Tony, centered on Luis Lopez and Tony Prince’s nightclub world.
Steam records 55 achievements. The listed interface and subtitle languages include English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, and Japanese, although the exact language availability can vary between components of the package.
Where to buy or activate GTA IV Complete Edition
For a new digital purchase, look specifically for Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, not an obsolete standalone entitlement or an old Episodes from Liberty City listing. Rockstar’s store and Steam are the documented current sales routes in the supplied support material.
If you are comparing retail listings, Grand Theft Auto IV Complete Edition PC is the useful product description to search for. Before paying, verify that the listing is for Windows PC, identifies the Complete Edition, and clearly explains whether it is a new key, a previously owned disc, or merely physical media.

Used-copy warning: a physical copy is not automatically a transferable game license. Rockstar says serial codes are single-use and non-transferable after redemption. A second-hand disc may look complete and still have an activation code that has already been used.
Can an original PC disc still work?
Rockstar’s April 3, 2026 support guidance provides an activation route for an unactivated physical PC copy. The code printed in or on the original manual can be used to activate and update the game through the Rockstar Games Launcher. This is a path for eligible, previously unactivated copies; it is not a guarantee that every used disc or code will work.
If the code has already been redeemed, the disc cannot normally create a new entitlement for another buyer. Treat an original physical package or manual as a collector’s item unless the seller can establish that the code is unused and the transaction is legitimate.
Current Windows requirements
Rockstar’s current PC support page, updated April 30, 2024, lists the following minimum requirements for Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition:

| Component | Published minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.40 GHz or AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core at 2.5 GHz |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM |
| Graphics | 512 MB NVIDIA 8600 or 512 MB ATI 3870 |
| Sound | DirectX 9.0c-compliant and Windows-compatible sound card |
| Storage | 22 GB |
| Input | Mouse and keyboard; controller recommended |
These are unusually old-looking specifications, but they are the current figures Rockstar publishes for this PC title. Older Steam and legacy documentation can show a Core 2 Duo, 1.5 GB of RAM, and a 256 MB graphics card. Those figures describe an earlier requirements list and should not replace the newer Rockstar baseline in a current buying guide.
Meeting the numbers does not guarantee a trouble-free installation. Rockstar specifically warns that integrated graphics, mobile chipsets, and other unlisted configurations may be incompatible or unsupported. The published minimum also does not promise a particular frame rate or modern high-resolution experience.
What the requirements do not say
- An SSD is not required. Rockstar specifies 22 GB of storage, not a particular storage technology. An SSD can be a sensible general PC upgrade, but it should not be marketed as a GTA IV requirement.
- A dedicated headset is not required. The game needs a compatible Windows sound device. Headphones, a headset, or speakers are optional equipment.
- A controller is optional. Mouse and keyboard are supported, while Rockstar and Steam identify controller use as recommended or supported.
- The listed operating-system baseline is Windows 10 64-bit. Do not use the old requirements as proof of support for an unlisted combination of Windows edition, mobile chipset, or integrated GPU.
Launcher, account, and internet requirements
A current PC installation requires more than the game files. You need the Rockstar Games Launcher and a Rockstar Games account, including when you buy through Steam. Rockstar’s requirements also mention DirectX, Chromium, the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable, and authentication software used for entitlement and DRM-related checks.
The installation needs internet access for activation and periodic entitlement verification. The launcher may therefore require an online check even though the game no longer provides official multiplayer. Rockstar’s generic requirements also mention online play; that wording should not be read as confirmation that GTA IV’s former multiplayer service is still available.

- Confirm the edition. Your purchase or existing entitlement should identify Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition. Avoid assuming that an old standalone or Episodes from Liberty City listing represents the current build.
- Install or update the Rockstar Games Launcher. Sign in with the Rockstar Games account associated with the entitlement. Steam users still need this platform because the current PC build relies on Rockstar’s launcher and authentication services.
- Install from the platform where you own it. For Steam, install the Complete Edition from your Steam library. For a Rockstar entitlement, select the game in the Rockstar Games Launcher and begin its installation there.
- Allow prerequisite components to install. DirectX, Chromium, the Visual C++ 2008 SP1 runtime, and authentication components may be installed or checked as part of setup. Do not remove these components simply because the base game itself is old.
- Run the current update. Rockstar’s PC title-update record identifies Title Update 1.20 and documents fixes through June 11, 2024. Let Steam and the Rockstar Launcher finish updating before diagnosing a launch problem.
- Launch once while online. The first run can require account authentication and entitlement verification. After that, the launcher may still require periodic checks according to Rockstar’s current requirements.
Owners of older Steam versions may see content associated with the former Episodes from Liberty City installation during the transition to the Complete Edition. The important result is that the installation is updated to the current Complete Edition rather than left as a legacy standalone arrangement.
What happened to multiplayer?
Official GTA IV multiplayer is not available in the current Complete Edition service model. During the March 2020 transition, Games for Windows Live, multiplayer mode, and leaderboards were discontinued. The Complete Edition should therefore be treated as a single-player package containing three campaigns.

- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Steam store metadata can still display legacy multiplayer-related labels. Those labels are a remnant of the store listing and do not override Rockstar’s transition documentation. Do not buy the game expecting official online deathmatches, races, co-op, or functioning publisher leaderboards.
Community projects and unofficial modifications are a separate matter. They are not the same as Rockstar-supported multiplayer, and their availability, safety, and compatibility can change independently of the game’s official launcher.
Patch and maintenance status
Rockstar’s current PC title-update page identifies Title Update 1.20. Its documented changes include fixes for stability and performance, an AMD graphics-memory issue, command-line parameter handling, and an incorrect uninstall behavior in the Rockstar Launcher.
The June 11, 2024 entry is especially relevant to Steam users: it fixed a condition in which the game would not start from Steam when the Rockstar Games Launcher was not installed. That does not mean every launch failure has the same cause, but it is a reason to install and update the launcher before trying more invasive fixes.
Rockstar’s general GTA IV PC troubleshooting guidance, updated March 20, 2024, directs players to use the latest version, check the in-game benchmark, and work through installation, launch, driver, and performance troubleshooting. There is no publisher-provided frame-rate guarantee to use as a compatibility test.
Windows troubleshooting checklist
If the game will not start from Steam
- Confirm that the Rockstar Games Launcher is installed, updated, and signed in.
- Allow Steam and the launcher to complete their updates.
- Use Steam’s local-file verification option. Rockstar’s support guidance says this can update the installation and launcher files and does not require revoking or reactivating the product.
- Restart the launcher and try again while connected to the internet.
If Steam reports No Disc Inserted
For the legacy Steam error commonly displayed as No Disc Inserted, Rockstar recommends verifying local files. The purpose is to refresh the game and launcher files; the support article specifically says this process does not require revoking or reactivating the product.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
If performance is poor or graphics are missing
- Check that the system is using the intended GPU rather than an unsupported integrated graphics adapter.
- Install current graphics drivers from the GPU or computer manufacturer first.
- Run the in-game benchmark and use its result to identify whether the problem is graphical, CPU-related, or tied to configuration.
- Compare the hardware with Rockstar’s current requirements, not the older 256 MB graphics and 1.5 GB RAM figures.
- Remember that mobile chipsets and other unlisted configurations may be unsupported even when their headline specifications look sufficient.
A third-party tool such as Outbyte Driver Updater is optional and is not a GTA IV component. Outbyte describes features for scanning for missing or outdated drivers and backing up or restoring drivers, but the safer first-line approach is still to obtain drivers directly from the GPU, motherboard, laptop, or PC manufacturer. Do not assume a driver utility will fix GTA IV specifically, increase frame rates, or resolve a launcher entitlement problem.
If a save disappears after an update or mod
Back up your saves before changing the installation, adding a mod, or moving between legacy and Complete Edition files. Community technical references document configuration and save locations, and they note that Complete Edition saves and older retail saves can use different arrangements. Because the exact location depends on the installation and Windows account, identify the active save folder before making changes rather than copying files at random.
Existing saves were intended to remain compatible during the 2020 transition, but a backup is still important. A save made by one installation arrangement may not appear where another arrangement expects it, and unofficial fixes can introduce their own compatibility problems.
Mods and community fixes
Community resources such as PCGamingWiki document configuration locations, legacy DRM differences, and unofficial fixes. The same community documentation identifies the Complete Edition as having removed Games for Windows Live and SecuROM-related DRM, while the modern launcher still performs entitlement and authentication checks.
Tools such as FusionFix are community projects, not Rockstar-supported components. They may address visual, compatibility, or modern-display issues for some players, but they are not guaranteed, publisher-tested solutions. Back up saves and the unmodified installation before using one, read the project’s current compatibility notes, and remove or disable unofficial changes when reporting a problem to Rockstar support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a controller or storage upgrade worth buying?
A controller is the most natural optional accessory. Steam lists controller support, and Rockstar recommends controller input. If you prefer analog movement or console-style controls, a Windows PC game controller is a reasonable setup choice, but no particular brand or model is required and keyboard-and-mouse play remains supported.
Storage is less clear-cut. The game requires 22 GB, so a PC with insufficient free space needs a storage solution. However, Rockstar does not require an SSD, and the article’s evidence does not establish a particular loading-time benefit. Treat an SSD as a general PC upgrade rather than a GTA IV-specific purchase.
What you should expect from the current PC edition
The Complete Edition gives Windows players the base game and both major episodic campaigns in one package, with achievements and the listed interface/subtitle language options. It is a sensible way to approach GTA IV on a current PC if you want the single-player content and are prepared to use Rockstar’s account and launcher infrastructure.

It is not the same service that existed around the Games for Windows Live era. Multiplayer and leaderboards are gone, old retail activation can be difficult for second-hand buyers, and the game’s very old minimum specifications do not guarantee compatibility with every modern laptop or integrated GPU. The reliable setup path is to use the Complete Edition, install the current launcher, apply the current update, and treat community fixes as optional troubleshooting rather than part of the official product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still play GTA IV online on Windows?
No. The current Complete Edition no longer provides official multiplayer or leaderboards. Games for Windows Live and the former multiplayer service were discontinued during the 2020 transition. Steam may still show legacy multiplayer metadata, but that does not mean the service is active.
Is GTA IV Complete Edition the same as the original PC game?
It includes the original Grand Theft Auto IV campaign, but it also includes The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. It is the current Windows product to look for rather than an obsolete standalone retail entitlement.
Can I activate a used GTA IV PC disc?
Only if the copy is eligible and its activation code has not already been redeemed. Rockstar says the code from an unactivated physical copy can be used through the Rockstar Games Launcher, but serial codes are single-use and non-transferable after redemption. A used disc is therefore not a guaranteed activation purchase.

Yes. Current PC requirements and Rockstar’s title-update documentation indicate that Steam installations depend on the Rockstar Games Launcher and a Rockstar Games account. Install and update the launcher before troubleshooting a Steam launch failure.
Are mods such as FusionFix officially supported?
No. FusionFix and similar tools are community projects. They may help some configurations, but Rockstar does not guarantee or publisher-test them. Back up saves and the original installation before using unofficial fixes.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy or activate Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, install the Rockstar Games Launcher even if you use Steam, and check your PC against Rockstar’s current Windows 10 64-bit requirements. Expect three single-player campaigns—not official multiplayer—and treat used activation codes, unsupported integrated graphics, and community mods as the main sources of avoidable risk.
