Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA Online on PC on September 17, 2024. It is required for official online sessions, but Rockstar provides a way to disable it for Story Mode. The same week, launcher metadata fueled speculation that the original Red Dead Redemption was coming to PC; Rockstar confirmed the port on October 8, 2024, and released it on October 29.
What changed in GTA Online on PC?
Rockstar’s GTAV Title Update 1.69 notes date the BattlEye Anti-Cheat integration for PC to September 17, 2024. The notes also list unrelated stability fixes, so BattlEye was one part of a broader update.
Rockstar describes BattlEye as kernel anti-cheat software. In its BattlEye FAQ, Rockstar says the software is intended to detect and prohibit cheat software accessing GTA Online servers, attempts to manipulate protected game code, and actions that sabotage other players’ experience. That explains Rockstar’s stated purpose; it is not independent evidence that cheating has decreased or a measure of the system’s effectiveness.
Does GTA Online require BattlEye?
Yes. Rockstar says BattlEye must be active to connect to official GTA Online servers on PC. Its FAQ and update notes distinguish online play from Story Mode, where the anti-cheat can be disabled.

Rockstar’s FAQ says information indicating active cheat software may result in suspensions or bans from Rockstar titles and services if it reflects a breach of the company’s Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. The reviewed official material does not provide a named statistic for detections, cheating reduction, or the number of affected players.
Can you disable BattlEye for Story Mode?
Yes. Rockstar’s update notes describe a Rockstar Games Launcher option to disable BattlEye for Story Mode, as well as the -nobattleye launch argument for Story Mode and third-party launchers. If you launch without BattlEye, Rockstar says you cannot connect to official GTA Online servers. Third-party servers may have their own launch instructions; disabling the anti-cheat is not a way to bypass its requirement for official online play.

- Experience the epic western adventures that defined a generation.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
- Featuring the complete single-player experiences of both games, Red Dead Redemption also includes bonus content from the Game of the Year Edition and more.
Can you play GTA Online on Steam Deck?
Not under Rockstar’s current BattlEye configuration. Rockstar’s FAQ and alert guidance say Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online: players can play GTAV Story Mode, but cannot play GTA Online. Rockstar also says GTAV and GTA Online are not officially supported on Steam Deck. This is a statement about these Rockstar games and this configuration, not a general limitation of BattlEye or Linux.
What information does BattlEye monitor?
Rockstar’s FAQ lists categories of information that BattlEye may monitor:
- IP address.
- Game identifiers, including in-game name and account ID.
- Hardware device information and identifiers.
- Operating-system information.
- Game- and operating-system-related files and memory.
- Running processes, drivers, and other executable code.
- Some file names, which may include an operating-system username.
Rockstar says it follows a data-minimization policy and stores data only when necessary, such as when it finds information that may indicate cheat software. Those are Rockstar’s descriptions, not an independent privacy audit.
Why did Red Dead Redemption PC rumors start?
On September 17, 2024, public reporting pointed to PC-related metadata appearing in a Rockstar launcher update. The timing, alongside the BattlEye news, helped fuel speculation about a PC version of the original 2010 Red Dead Redemption. Launcher metadata was not an official confirmation from Rockstar, so the port remained a rumor at that point.

The announcement named the Rockstar Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store as PC storefronts. Rockstar’s Newswire index later listed the PC release as available from October 29, 2024.
