A GTA Online character that disappears from the selection screen may be the result of a cloud-save retrieval error, a direct-session loading bug, the wrong linked account or profile, or a recent migration. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar specifically documents a problem that can show no characters when you enter directly into a Solo or Invite Only session. Do not create or delete a character until you have checked the account, version and recovery steps below.
What a missing GTA Online character usually means
A blank character screen is not proof that Rockstar deleted your character. The visible symptom can occur when the game cannot retrieve the latest save, when you enter a session type affected by a loading issue, or when you start the game with a different Rockstar Games account or console profile. Rockstar’s support documentation treats these as separate problems from intentional deletion.

The correct response depends on three facts: your platform, the exact message or prompt you see, and whether you recently changed accounts, console generations or PC versions. Work through those distinctions before making a new character.

First check the account, platform profile and game version
GTA Online progress is tied to the Rockstar Games account used to play. On PC, Rockstar says progress is associated with that Rockstar account and is available through the launcher when the same account remains linked. A different launcher login, console user, PSN ID or Xbox profile can therefore look like lost progress even though the original character still exists on the original account.

- Confirm the Rockstar Games account email or username currently signed in.
- Confirm the console profile, Gamertag or PSN ID that originally created the character.
- Confirm whether you launched the current-generation or previous-generation edition of GTAV.
- On PC, verify that the launcher is using the same Rockstar account as before; changing launchers does not create a separate character when the account link is unchanged.
Record the account identifiers before contacting support. Rockstar may ask for the affected Gamertag or PSN ID, Rockstar Games Nickname, and the date and time when the character disappeared.
If PS5 or Xbox Series X|S asks you to create a character
Rockstar documents a specific issue on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S when players enter GTA Online directly into a Solo or Invite Only session. The game can show no existing characters and prompt you to create one. Rockstar’s support article, updated April 25, 2024, says that prompt alone does not establish that the character was deleted.
Use Freemode first
- Back out of the character-creation prompt without confirming a new character.
- Launch GTA Online directly into a Freemode Session.
- Wait for the session to finish loading and check whether your existing character appears.
- After the character loads, you can join a Solo or Invite Only session normally.
Use the Story Mode Character Wheel
If entering Freemode does not work, start Story Mode and use the Character Wheel to access GTA Online. Once the existing character is available, join the desired Solo or Invite Only session from inside the loaded online game. This workaround addresses the direct-entry loading path; it is not a character-restoration or deletion command.

Do not type a name, select a gender or confirm the creation screen while you are trying to recover the old slot. A newly created character can obscure which slot the game is presenting and may complicate later support investigation.
If you see a cloud-save or character-save error
Rockstar’s PC article, updated June 17, 2024, describes the message that GTA Online save data could not be loaded from the Rockstar cloud servers. Rockstar says the error means the game is having trouble retrieving the latest character save data and that it should resolve on its own.

Recommended sequence for a temporary retrieval failure
- Close the message and leave the game rather than creating a replacement character.
- Restart the game and launcher, then sign in to the confirmed Rockstar account.
- Try GTA Online again after the restart. If the service-side retrieval problem has cleared, the existing character should return to the selection screen.
- If the error continues, follow Rockstar’s troubleshooting article for your specific platform instead of applying a console fix to a PC installation or vice versa.
PC local-profile troubleshooting
Rockstar’s PC guidance includes deleting the launcher’s local profile details and signing in again when cloud retrieval remains stuck. That operation removes local launcher-profile information; Rockstar explicitly says it does not delete the Rockstar account or your saved games. Use the documented launcher procedure, restart, and authenticate with the same account that owns the character.
A local-profile reset cannot restore progress that belongs to another account, and it cannot reverse an intentional character deletion. Its purpose is to make the launcher request the account’s cloud data again.
Save cleanly before you quit GTA Online
When a character or its recent progress appears correct, exit through the game’s save path rather than abruptly closing the application. Rockstar’s loss-of-progress guidance says to pause GTA Online and choose Return to Single Player when leaving. This gives the game an opportunity to write the current online state.
- Open the Pause menu while in GTA Online.
- Select Return to Single Player.
- Wait until the transition completes before closing the game or shutting down the console.
If rank, cars, items or apartments are still missing after a clean exit and a later sign-in, treat that as an account-specific progress-loss case and prepare a support request.
How to tell accidental disappearance from intentional deletion
Rockstar’s current deletion instructions, updated June 18, 2025, describe a deliberate confirmation flow. Players can have two GTA Online characters. Deletion requires selecting the character, confirming the action and entering the word delete. A character does not normally vanish merely because you opened the character selector.

Rockstar labels this deletion permanent. If you completed that confirmation sequence, ordinary restarts and the Freemode workaround are not an undo function; contact Rockstar Support with the account details and an exact description of what you confirmed.

PS4 or Xbox One to the newer console generation
Rockstar supports migrating PS4 or Xbox One progress to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. After migration, progress made on the different console generations does not synchronize between the profiles. For example, activity continued on the old-generation profile will not automatically appear on the migrated current-generation profile, and later progress on the current-generation profile will not flow backward.
When checking a missing character, identify which generation you last played and which profile you selected during migration. Launching the other edition can make a legitimate character appear absent.
Console to PC
Rockstar does not support migrating console progress to PC. A console character therefore cannot be expected to appear in the PC version through a transfer. Verify the PC Rockstar account and treat the PC profile as its own progression path.
PC Legacy to Enhanced
PC Legacy-to-Enhanced migration is a separate supported route. Rockstar says the migrated Legacy and Enhanced profiles do not synchronize after migration. Choose the profile that contains the progress you intend to use.

During the migration review stage, Rockstar warns that choosing a new character overwrites the existing character slot. Read the review screen carefully; do not select a new character as a test if your goal is to preserve the migrated one.
What to send Rockstar Support when the character remains missing
Rockstar cannot determine from a generic “missing character” report whether an individual account was deleted, migrated or failed to load. Give support enough account and timing information to inspect the correct record.
- The affected Gamertag, PSN ID or Rockstar Games Nickname.
- The Rockstar account identifier or email used with the affected profile.
- Your platform and edition: PC Legacy, PC Enhanced, PS4, PS5, Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- The date and approximate time, including time zone if known, when the character, rank, items, cars or apartments disappeared.
- The exact screen or error message, such as a prompt to create a character or a cloud-save retrieval error.
- Whether you recently migrated, changed console generations, changed PC editions or signed into another account.
- Which troubleshooting steps you already attempted and what happened after each one.
Use a factual timeline rather than guessing that deletion occurred. Include screenshots of the prompt or error if the support form permits attachments, but do not expose passwords or security codes.

Bottom line
A GTA Online character that is suddenly absent is more often a loading, cloud-save, account, edition or migration problem than proof of deletion. The safest order is: verify the linked account and version, use Freemode or the Story Mode Character Wheel on PS5/Xbox Series X|S, follow the platform’s cloud-save troubleshooting, exit through Pause > Return to Single Player, and contact Rockstar Support if the progress does not return. Only the explicit character-management flow that ends with typing delete is documented as intentional permanent deletion.
