Grand Theft Auto Online’s nostalgic Halloween surprise in October 2024 was a zombie Community Challenge set in North Yankton—the snowy location where Grand Theft Auto V begins. HotHardware reported that it was North Yankton’s first appearance in any way in GTA Online. The report describes a past event; the available sources do not establish whether it can still be played.
What was the Halloween surprise?
Rockstar’s October 2024 Halloween celebration included a Community Challenge in which players were asked to “dispatch the marching tides of undead” in North Yankton. That setting made the activity a callback to GTA V’s opening, rather than another Halloween event confined to Southern Los Santos. HotHardware’s October 4, 2024 report describes North Yankton as appearing in GTA Online for the first time.

Why North Yankton was a nostalgic setting
North Yankton is the snowy locale where GTA V’s story begins. Its graveyard is associated with a pivotal event involving the game’s protagonists, making the return of the location a reference to the story rather than simply a change of scenery. The report does not give further details about the challenge’s mechanics or the exact part of North Yankton players could explore.
What else was part of the seasonal celebration?
The zombie challenge was the unusual location-based feature. Separately, the event offered Halloween masks, disguises, outfits, and costumes at discounted prices. Rockstar framed the broader promotion as a monthlong Halloween celebration around Southern Los Santos, culminating in what it called “close encounters of a wholly different kind.”
