Its ray-tracing distinction is specific: Rockstar identified ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination as PC-only at launch, while ray-traced shadows and reflections had already appeared on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Later updates added further ray-tracing options.
What changed in the PC release
Rockstar’s March 2025 announcement framed the upgrade as bringing features previously available in the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of GTA Online to PC, alongside improved graphics and faster loading. The new PC version is called GTAV Enhanced; the earlier PC version remains available as GTAV Legacy. Rockstar says both editions remain available to new purchasers and existing owners. The upgrade also brought GTA Online content and player-experience changes, not just rendering features:
- Hao’s Special Works vehicles and performance upgrades.
- Ambient animals and a wildlife photography challenge.
- Access to GTA+ membership and Career Progress.
- A refreshed landing page, kernel-based anti-cheat, and proactive voice-chat moderation.
Which ray-tracing features are on PC?
At launch, Rockstar listed ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination as PC-only effects. Ambient occlusion adds contact shading where surfaces meet; global illumination models light that bounces around a scene. Rockstar also listed ray-traced shadows and reflections, but those effects had debuted on consoles rather than being exclusive to PC. Rockstar’s launch announcement and its current store description list the graphics features.

Rockstar later expanded the options: its August 28, 2025 Title Update 1.71 notes added high-resolution ray-traced reflections and a second ray bounce for ray-traced global illumination. These additions make the PC feature set more configurable, but the sources do not establish what performance any particular PC will achieve.
Upscaling, frame generation, and loading
Ray tracing is distinct from upscaling and frame generation. Rockstar listed AMD FSR 1 and FSR 3, NVIDIA DLSS 3, support for higher resolutions, aspect ratios and frame rates, and faster loading via SSD and DirectStorage on supported devices and configurations. In August 2025, NVIDIA announced DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation support for GTAV Enhanced on GeForce RTX 50 Series cards, and DLSS Frame Generation for RTX 40 Series. NVIDIA reported an average 3.9× result at 4K on RTX 50 Series with ray tracing enabled and all other settings maxed out; this is a vendor-reported figure for that configuration, not an independent benchmark or a promise of similar results on other hardware. The announcement also listed DualSense controller support, including adaptive triggers, and Dolby Atmos support. Availability of features such as DirectStorage, controller functions and graphics technologies depends on the compatible hardware and configuration specified by Rockstar; a feature list alone does not show that a specific PC supports every option.

Should you choose Enhanced or Legacy?
Enhanced is the edition to consider for its added graphics options and GTA Online additions, provided it runs on your hardware and you can play with friends using the same edition. Legacy remains an option for PCs that do not meet Enhanced’s requirements. Rockstar’s announcement refers to minimum requirements, but the sources cited here do not reproduce the full specification table, so check Rockstar’s current listing before deciding whether a particular PC qualifies. What existing PC owners should know before migrating
Rockstar allows Story Mode and GTA Online progress to be migrated from Legacy to Enhanced, but migration is not a reversible way to keep both versions in sync. The Story Mode transfer cannot be copied back after migration. GTA Online migration is also irreversible, though it does not delete Legacy progress. Rockstar describes both migrations as one-time. - Check Rockstar’s current PC requirements and your system’s support for the graphics and loading features you want.
- Choose whether and when to migrate progress, keeping in mind that the transfer is one-time and cannot be reversed as described above.
Is the upgrade free?
