To fix GTA V performance problems on PC, first check whether you have Legacy or Enhanced, then compare your PC with that edition’s requirements. Update the game and graphics driver, verify the game files, and lower demanding graphics settings gradually while monitoring FPS and hardware use. Enhanced has substantially higher requirements than Legacy, and there is no single settings preset or upgrade guaranteed to fix every drop.
First identify what kind of performance problem you have
Before changing settings, note which edition is installed and where the problem occurs: Story Mode, GTA Online, or both. Also distinguish between consistently low frame rates and brief stutters or freezes. Those symptoms can have different causes, so an average FPS figure alone may not tell the whole story.
- Low FPS: the game generally looks slow or remains below the frame rate you expect.
- Intermittent hitching: the game runs smoothly much of the time but pauses or stutters briefly. Steam notes that micro-stutter can occur even when average FPS is solid; its performance monitor includes FPS, CPU, GPU, and system RAM information. See Steam’s GTA V listing.
Check the requirements for your GTA V edition
Rockstar lists separate system requirements for Legacy and Enhanced. Compare your Windows version, processor, memory, graphics card and VRAM, and storage against the edition you play. The listed minimums are publisher requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate. Rockstar’s PC system requirements were updated December 10, 2025.
GTA V Enhanced
| Requirement level | Rockstar’s listed configuration |
|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 build 1909 or above; Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590; 8 GB RAM; GTX 1630 (4 GB VRAM) or RX 6400 (4 GB VRAM); 105 GB SSD required. |
| Recommended | Windows 11; Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600; 16 GB dual-channel RAM; RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT with 8 GB VRAM; DirectStorage-compatible drive. |
GTA V Legacy
| Requirement level | Rockstar’s listed configuration |
|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 64-bit; Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850; 4 GB RAM; 9800 GT or HD 4870 with 1 GB VRAM; 125 GB HDD. |
| Recommended | 8 GB RAM; GTX 660 or HD 7870 with 2 GB VRAM. The cited requirements page lists these as the recommended Legacy memory and graphics specifications. |
Apply Rockstar’s basic maintenance steps
Rockstar’s general PC troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for the latest game patch, updating graphics drivers, verifying game files, and addressing DirectX or Visual C++ errors using the redistributables in the game installation folder. The precise launcher controls can differ, so use the verify or repair option in the launcher where your copy is installed. Follow Rockstar’s PC troubleshooting steps, last updated October 7, 2025.

- Launch while connected to the internet so the game can receive the latest patch.
- Install an appropriate graphics driver update for your GPU from its manufacturer.
- Verify the game files through the launcher used to install the game. This checks for missing or damaged files without assuming a graphics setting is the cause.
- For DirectX or Visual C++ errors, run the relevant redistributables from the GTA V installation folder as Rockstar advises.
Lower demanding settings one change at a time
If your PC is struggling under the settings currently selected, reduce demanding video options in small steps and test after each change. Steam’s support material says lowering manually selected video options can help FPS when those settings exceed the machine’s capability. Keep a note of each change so you can reverse one that worsens image quality without improving the problem.
There is no source-backed universal “best settings” configuration for every GPU and processor. GTA V Enhanced adds ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows, and reflections, and supports AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS, according to Steam’s feature listing. The presence of these options does not establish that enabling a particular mode will improve performance on every supported graphics card.

Measure smoothness, not just average FPS
While reproducing the problem, watch FPS alongside CPU, GPU, and system RAM readings if your performance monitor provides them. Compare the same area or activity before and after a setting change. A stable average can mask brief hitches, so pay attention to when the stutter occurs as well as the displayed FPS. Avoid attributing the issue to a specific component until your observations support that diagnosis.

For Enhanced, Rockstar lists a 105 GB SSD as required and a DirectStorage-compatible drive in the recommended configuration. Steam says SSD storage and DirectStorage improve loading speed on supported devices. Neither source says that an SSD resolves CPU or GPU bottlenecks or all frame-rate drops. If you need storage for Enhanced or suspect a storage limitation, check your PC’s interface, drive form factor, and available capacity before upgrading.

Escalate persistent problems with diagnostics
If the issue continues after the checks above, or involves crashes and freezes, Rockstar’s troubleshooting guidance points to diagnostic files such as launcher.log, DxDiag, and MSInfo. These can help identify system specifications and Windows Error Reporting failures when seeking support. Share them through the relevant support channel rather than guessing at a hardware fix.
