GTA V takes place in Los Santos and the surrounding hills, countryside, and beaches—a fictionalized version of present-day Southern California. GTA VI moves the series to Leonida, a fictional state whose modern-day Vice City is only part of a wider setting. Rockstar’s official descriptions also point to different thematic emphases: GTA V foregrounds the pursuit of money, while GTA VI introduces a criminal conspiracy amid stories and characters connected to online fame, music, business, and crime. That is a reading of the promotional material, not a direct developer comparison of the games’ satire.

The distinction is not simply Los Angeles versus Miami. Rockstar’s descriptions frame GTA V around a city and its nearby landscapes, while GTA VI is presented as a broader state setting, with Vice City as its best-known urban center. Both are fictionalized versions of contemporary places; the official descriptions do not establish that either game reproduces a real-world region exactly.

What does Rockstar’s material suggest about each game’s satire?
GTA V: money and aspiration
Rockstar’s 2011 announcement says GTA V focuses on “the pursuit of the almighty dollar” in present-day Southern California. That makes money and aspiration clear parts of the stated premise. It does not, by itself, define every target or element of the game’s satire. Read the announcement.
GTA VI: crime amid fame, media, and business
Rockstar describes GTA VI as following Jason and Lucia as they attempt a score and become caught in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. Its character and setting material also introduces a Vice City music scene, viral social-media success, a real-estate and entertainment empire, and criminal enterprises.
