Your PlayStation account can show trophy information on both PS4 and PS5, but that does not mean every game’s PS4 and PS5 versions share a trophy list—or that trophies earned in one version automatically unlock in the other. Sony’s general guidance does not set a universal rule for cross-version trophy lists or auto-unlocks. Check the specific game before choosing a version to play.
Do PS4 and PS5 versions have separate trophy lists?
It depends on the game. Sony explains that trophies are tied to objectives set by individual games, and that their number, grades, and conditions vary. Its general support guidance does not say that all PS4 and PS5 versions of a game share one list, or that paired versions always have separate lists. Nor does it establish a universal rule for trophies automatically unlocking across versions.
On PS5, open your profile’s Trophies area to see earned trophies. Select a game and then a trophy to view its details. For a particular game, check its official information or compare the trophy lists visible on PlayStation before assuming how its versions behave. Sony’s trophy guide describes trophy viewing and game-specific objectives.
Do PS4 trophies transfer to PS5?
Trophy information is associated with your PlayStation account, and Sony instructs players preparing a PS4-to-PS5 transfer to sign in with the same account and synchronize trophy information. This supports viewing your account’s trophy information on the new console; it does not establish that a game’s PS5 version will award additional trophies for achievements completed in its PS4 version.

Sony’s transfer guide includes trophy synchronization among the steps to take before transferring data. It also covers transferring PS4 saved data for games playable on PS5 and saved data from games playable on PS5. After initial setup, PS4 saved-data transfer is limited to the logged-in user. Will PS5 trophies auto-pop if you already earned them on PS4?
There is no general yes-or-no answer established by Sony’s broad support material. Automatic trophy unlocking is a title-specific question: verify the exact game’s official guidance or its trophy-list behavior before relying on it. An account-level trophy sync is not the same thing as an automatic unlock in another version of a game.

Keep saved-game migration separate from trophy behavior. PlayStation’s October 9, 2020 article, “PS4 games on PS5: Your top questions answered,” says: “Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.” That statement concerns saves, not trophy-list sharing or automatic trophy unlocking.

If both versions are available, PS5 lets you choose which one to launch from your Game Library. The selected version matters when you are trying to follow a particular trophy list, but choosing a version alone cannot tell you whether its trophies will carry over or unlock automatically.

- Open Game Library on PS5 and highlight the game.
- Open the game’s options menu (…).
- Select Select Version, then choose the available PS4 or PS5 version.
Sony documents version selection and upgrade conditions on its Games Support page. A PS5 upgrade offer is different from simply playing a PS4 game that is compatible with PS5; availability and eligibility depend on the game and offer.
Disc upgrades and digital editions
An eligible PS4 game disc can be upgraded to its digital PS5 version on a PS5 with a disc drive. The disc must remain inserted whenever you play that upgraded digital game. PS4 discs do not work in PS5 Digital Edition consoles. Eligible digital PS4 games may also have upgrade offers; Sony says PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible unless otherwise indicated. Check the game’s offer for its exact terms.

Backward compatibility is not a PS5 upgrade
PS5 is compatible with the majority of PS4 games, but playing a compatible PS4 version is not the same as installing a native PS5 version. Sony’s compatibility guidance says PlayStation Store identifies incompatible games with the label “Playable on: PS4 only.” That label concerns compatibility, not whether a PS5 upgrade or a particular trophy arrangement exists. What to verify before starting a game
- Which version you will launch: the PS4 version running on PS5, or the native PS5 version.
- Whether an upgrade is offered: and any price, edition, disc, or other eligibility conditions shown for that specific game.
- Whether saves transfer: Sony says this varies by title and is decided by the developer.
- How trophies behave: whether versions use shared or separate lists and whether any trophies unlock automatically. Confirm this for the exact title rather than inferring it from account sync, an upgrade, or save transfer.
