Start with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City if you want a focused, stylish crime story with a sharply defined city and a manageable first run. Start with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas if you want a much larger sandbox, several cities, more travel and a longer, systems-heavy commitment.
For current hardware, the practical entry point is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. It includes both games, so the choice is about which campaign to launch first rather than which classic you must permanently give up.

Quick answer: choose by the kind of first playthrough you want
| Question | Choose Vice City | Choose San Andreas |
|---|---|---|
| What kind of story do you want? | A concentrated, character-driven rise through one strongly defined city | Carl Johnson’s return to Los Santos amid gang trouble, drugs and corruption |
| How much world do you want to learn? | One city with a clear identity and a comparatively contained route through the campaign | Three detailed cities and an entire state to roam, according to Take-Two’s release material |
| What is your tolerance for commitment? | A shorter-feeling, mood-forward first classic | A broader adventure with more traversal and room to experiment |
| Which is the safer first classic for a newcomer? | Usually Vice City, because its scope is easier to understand | Choose it first if exploration and variety matter more than a compact structure |
Neither game is simply the “correct” winner. They pursue different versions of open-world crime drama. Vice City concentrates its impact; San Andreas expands the map, the travel and the number of things competing for your attention.

A city takeover with a clear dramatic center
Rockstar describes Vice City as a non-linear, character-driven narrative in which you arrive in a town “brimming with delights and degradation” and can take it over as you choose. That premise tells you how the campaign feels at a high level: the city is the main stage, and your progress is tied to building influence within it rather than constantly leaving it behind.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
The result is a concentrated first playthrough. You spend more of your time learning one urban identity, recognizing its districts and following a crime story whose momentum comes from controlling that environment. The structure still gives you freedom, but the freedom is organized around a single place.
Why its atmosphere works for first-time players
Vice City has a strong period identity. Its presentation, music and setting are designed to feel like a specific era rather than a generic modern metropolis. That consistency makes the game easy to read: the tone, the locations and the central ambition all point in the same direction.
For a new player, a focused setting also reduces orientation overhead. You are not deciding which distant region to visit next or learning several city identities at once. You can concentrate on the controls, mission logic and the rhythm of a classic GTA campaign while the world remains memorable.

Where Vice City can feel limited
The same concentration that makes Vice City approachable can feel restrictive if you want constant geographical change. Its appeal depends on enjoying a single-city crime rise and a strong mood. Players who measure value by map size, travel distance or the number of distinct environments may find San Andreas more satisfying.
What San Andreas is trying to do
A state-sized framework around Carl Johnson
Rockstar’s official description places Carl Johnson in Los Santos, a city “tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.” Take-Two’s release material expands the scope further, describing three detailed cities and an entire state to roam.
Rank #2
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
That scale changes the shape of the game. San Andreas is not only a city takeover story; it is a journey through a larger territory with more movement between major locations. The world itself becomes a reason to keep playing, because travelling, experimenting and deciding where to go next are part of the commitment.
Breadth, variety and a longer learning curve
San Andreas is the better first choice when your priority is breadth. You get more room to explore, more transitions between places and a campaign that asks you to manage a larger overall context. This can make the game feel more ambitious, but it also means more systems and more geography to absorb before everything feels familiar.
Take-Two’s 2013 announcement for the mobile version advertised “over 70 hours of gameplay.” Treat that as publisher-provided guidance for that edition, not as a guaranteed completion time on every platform or for every player. Your own duration will depend on whether you follow the main story, explore extensively or pursue optional activities.
Where San Andreas can feel overwhelming
A larger world is not automatically a better first experience. If you prefer a tightly paced crime narrative, the distance between major places can feel like a distraction. San Andreas rewards curiosity and patience; it is less suited to someone who wants to understand the entire game quickly and move through a single, strongly unified setting.
Vice City and San Andreas compared by the decisions that matter
Story shape
| Axis | Vice City | San Andreas |
|---|---|---|
| Core premise | Arrive in a city, build influence and take it over through a non-linear, character-driven crime narrative | Carl Johnson returns to Los Santos amid gang trouble, drugs and corruption |
| Primary dramatic focus | One city’s identity and the protagonist’s rise within it | A wider social and geographical crisis spread across a larger territory |
| Best fit | Players who want atmosphere and a concentrated campaign | Players who want exploration, variety and a larger time investment |
Choose based on the shape of story you prefer, not on which plot sounds more prestigious. Vice City’s non-linear city takeover gives you a clear dramatic object. San Andreas gives you a broader setting in which the conflict around Carl Johnson can unfold across multiple places.

- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
World scale and navigation
Vice City’s one-city identity makes navigation conceptually simple: you are learning a single urban environment and its surrounding routes. San Andreas has three detailed cities and an entire state, so the world asks more of your attention. You will spend more time travelling between major areas and deciding how much of the territory to investigate.
This is a difference in commitment, not a scorecard. A larger map creates more opportunities for discovery, but it also adds travel time and more context to remember. A focused map makes the campaign easier to resume after a break and keeps the central setting in view.
Pacing and session length
Vice City is a strong fit for players who want a campaign that can be understood in shorter sessions. Its focused geography helps you return to the game without first reconstructing where you are in a large state.
San Andreas suits players who enjoy settling into a long-running game. The “over 70 hours” figure belongs specifically to Take-Two’s 2013 mobile-version guidance, so do not use it as a universal promise. It does, however, communicate the publisher’s intended scale: this is a substantial commitment rather than a compact side trip.
Freedom versus focus
Both games offer open-ended choice, but they express it differently. Vice City gives you freedom inside a strongly framed city takeover. San Andreas gives you freedom through a larger territory and more opportunities to move between places. If you want the world to provide the structure, pick Vice City; if you want the world to provide the playground, pick San Andreas.

Which game should a new player start with?
Start with Vice City when these statements sound like you
- You want the clearest possible introduction to classic GTA design.
- A strong period atmosphere matters as much as map size.
- You prefer one city with a memorable identity over several regions.
- You want a focused crime story before committing to a much larger sandbox.
- You are likely to play in short or irregular sessions and want an easy world to re-enter.
Start with San Andreas when these statements sound like you
- Exploration and travel are central reasons you play open-world games.
- You want three cities and an entire state rather than one primary urban setting.
- You enjoy games with more systems, more experimentation and a longer learning curve.
- You are comfortable treating the campaign as a major time investment.
- You would rather discover the series at its broadest classic scale than begin with its most concentrated entry.
If you are completely undecided
Pick Vice City first. Its focused city structure and clear period identity provide the gentlest introduction to the two. Move to San Andreas afterward when you want a larger world and a longer commitment. This order also lets you experience the contrast between the games instead of asking one title to satisfy both preferences.
Should you play both, and in what order?
These games are complementary rather than redundant. Vice City is the compact, mood-forward choice; San Andreas is the breadth-and-exploration choice. Playing both makes the difference in design immediately apparent.
- Play Vice City first if you want to learn the classic formula through a single-city crime rise.
- Switch to San Andreas second when you are ready for more travel, more geography and a larger overall commitment.
- Reverse the order only if the promise of three cities and an entire state is the main reason you are interested. Starting with San Andreas will not prevent you from appreciating Vice City later, but the smaller scope may feel like a deliberate contraction afterward.
Which edition should you buy on modern platforms?
The practical modern option: The Definitive Edition
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition bundles GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. Rockstar lists modern GTA V-inspired controls, higher-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and weather, and increased draw distance among its updates.
That package is the straightforward way to access both games on current systems. You can choose Vice City or San Andreas after installation, then return to the other campaign without buying a second title.

Original releases versus the 2021 package
Vice City and San Andreas are the original 2002 and 2004 classics, while The Definitive Edition is a 2021 modernized package. Do not treat descriptions of the original releases as guarantees about how every visual, control or performance detail behaves in the newer edition.
If preserving the original presentation is your priority, confirm exactly which release a store is selling. If convenience on a current console or PC matters more, the Definitive Edition is the clearly documented bundle option, with both games included.
A practical buying and starting checklist
- Choose your first campaign. Select Vice City for a focused, atmosphere-led city takeover; select San Andreas for a larger territory, more travel and a longer commitment.
- Confirm the edition name. Look for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition if you want the modern bundle containing both games.
- Match the listing to your hardware. Check whether you are buying an Xbox, Switch, PlayStation or PC version, and do not assume that a PS4 listing has the same presentation as a separate current-generation release.
- Check region and stock. Physical availability, digital storefront listings and prices can change by country and over time.
- Install the latest available update. The announcement records enhanced controls and visuals, but the current patch state is a platform-specific detail you should verify before starting.
- Give San Andreas more time if you choose it first. Its publisher-described scope is substantially larger, so do not judge it by the pacing expectations of a one-city campaign.
Common mistakes when choosing between them
Using the “over 70 hours” figure as a promise
The figure comes from Take-Two’s 2013 announcement for the mobile version of San Andreas. It is publisher guidance for that edition, not a guaranteed completion time for the Definitive Edition, another platform or your personal play style.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAssuming the bigger game is automatically better
San Andreas has the broader world, but breadth introduces more travel and more to learn. Vice City’s smaller, strongly defined setting is an advantage when you value pacing, atmosphere and a clear dramatic center.
Assuming modern versions behave identically everywhere
The 2021 announcement lists a common set of enhancements, but it does not establish identical performance or feature parity on every system. Verify the platform-specific listing and current patch information.
Buying a single game when the bundle fits better
If you expect to play both classics, the Definitive Edition is the documented modern bundle. Buying it lets you begin with one game and keep the other available without making a second purchase decision later.
Final decision
Choose Vice City first for a focused, stylish and manageable crime story built around taking over one memorable city. Choose San Andreas first for a larger sandbox centered on Carl Johnson, three detailed cities and an entire state to explore. For most new players who are unsure, Vice City is the cleaner introduction; for players who already know they want scale and variety, San Andreas is the better opening commitment.
