The headline refers to a real third-party mod released by PureDark on November 13, 2023—not an official Rockstar feature. It added DLSS 3 Frame Generation to the older PC version of Grand Theft Auto V and reportedly produced roughly double the displayed frame rate in some heavily modded, high-resolution configurations. The result depended on the GPU, resolution, visual-mod stack, base frame rate, and whether the comparison used DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, or both.
That history matters less to most current players. Rockstar’s free GTA V Enhanced PC upgrade launched on March 4, 2025 with native DLSS and FSR 3 support. Before installing the old mod, determine whether you are using Legacy or Enhanced.

What the 2023 GTA V mod actually added
PureDark’s mod brought DLSS 3 Frame Generation to the original PC build of GTA V, particularly benefiting demanding setups using NaturalVision Evolved, QuantV, ENB presets, high-resolution textures, ray-traced effects, or 4K output.

- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
- DLSS Super Resolution renders the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image.
- DLSS Frame Generation creates additional frames between conventionally rendered frames using motion and image data.
Frame Generation can raise the number shown by an FPS counter, but it does not make the game engine simulate twice as many frames. The underlying rendered frames still determine much of the input response and game logic.
Contemporary coverage reported that PureDark generated the motion-vector information required by Frame Generation through custom shaders. That is considerably more involved than replacing a DLSS DLL or exposing a hidden upscaling option: the mod has to hook into the rendering pipeline and supply data the original engine was never designed to provide.
How large was the performance boost?
The strongest responsible summary is that the mod demonstrated approximately double the displayed frame rate in some configurations. That is not a universal GTA V result and should not be read as a guaranteed doubling of real rendering performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Reported configuration | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS 3 versus no upscaler | About 2× FPS in some comparisons | Configuration-dependent; the available coverage does not establish a standard benchmark |
| Heavily modded 4K scene with an RTX 4090 | 87 to 152 FPS | Reported by third-party coverage; do not attribute the entire gain to Frame Generation alone |
| Another heavily modded 4K scene | 78 to 147 FPS | Also a reported comparison, not an independent standardized test |
The 87-to-152 and 78-to-147 FPS figures came from coverage of a NaturalVision-style installation by RockstarIntel. They may include the combined effect of upscaling and Frame Generation, along with the particular graphics settings and scene. The evidence does not establish minimum FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, latency, or image quality.
Displayed FPS is not the same as rendered FPS
Consider a system rendering the game at 70 FPS. Frame Generation might insert additional frames and produce a much higher displayed output rate, but the game is still being conventionally rendered at roughly 70 FPS. Controls therefore may not feel as responsive as a natively rendered 140 FPS experience.
Frame Generation generally works best when the base frame rate is already reasonably high and stable. It is a poor solution for a CPU-limited system or a game struggling at very low FPS. In those cases, generated frames can make camera movement appear smoother without fixing simulation delays, traversal stutter, or input latency.
Reported drawbacks included increased latency and visual artifacts. Possible problems include ghosting around vehicles and foliage, flickering, disocclusion errors, HUD or minimap artifacts, and smearing during rapid camera movement. ReShade, ENB, overlays, FiveM interfaces, and other injected components can add further compatibility problems.

Which GPUs could use it?
Native NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation is associated with the RTX 40-series class of hardware. It should not be described as a feature that works identically on every RTX card.
- RTX 40-series: the intended hardware class for native DLSS 3 Frame Generation.
- RTX 20- and 30-series: some community setups can use FSR 3 Frame Generation or translation layers, but that is not native DLSS 3 Frame Generation.
- AMD and Intel GPUs: may work with FSR-based approaches or compatibility tools such as DLSS Enabler, depending on the exact mod and game build.
- RTX 50-series: current official Enhanced support concerns DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation, not the 2023 Legacy mod.
The Nexus Mods guidance on PureDark mods and DLSS Enabler describes workflows that can broaden compatibility, but those add their own loaders, version requirements, and possible failure points. FSR-based frame generation should not be marketed as equivalent to native DLSS 3.
Legacy and Enhanced are different targets
GTA V Legacy
The 2023 PureDark release targeted the older PC build now generally called GTA V Legacy. Legacy remains important for players whose visual overhauls, ScriptHook tools, or other mod ecosystems have not moved to Enhanced.
Game updates can replace modified files or break loaders. Installation paths, DLL names, and compatibility can also change. A guide written for the 2023 build may not work on the current Legacy version.
GTA V Enhanced
Rockstar’s Enhanced PC upgrade arrived on March 4, 2025 as a free upgrade for existing PC owners. It added native DLSS 3, FSR 3, ray tracing, DirectStorage, and higher-resolution and higher-frame-rate features, subject to hardware and configuration.
On August 12, 2025, NVIDIA announced DLSS 4 support for GTA V Enhanced. RTX 40-series cards use Frame Generation, while RTX 50-series cards can use Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA reported average gains of up to 3.9× at 4K with ray tracing and maximum settings on RTX 50-series hardware; those are NVIDIA’s official Enhanced test figures, not results from the 2023 PureDark mod.
An Enhanced player should therefore start with the game’s built-in DLSS and Frame Generation options. Do not install a Legacy mod simply because an old headline says that GTA V needs DLSS 3.

Was the mod free?
Contemporary reporting described PureDark’s DLSS 3 mod as being distributed through a paid Patreon-access model rather than as a conventional free download. Reports also discussed Patreon-linked Discord distribution and DRM-like restrictions in some PureDark mods. A later PureDark Patreon post describes that distribution model for a subsequent GTA V upscaler and FSR 3 build.
That later post does not prove the current availability, price, or compatibility of the original November 2023 release. If you pursue it, use only the creator’s official channel and verify that the build matches your exact GTA V edition and version. Avoid cracked copies and unofficial mirrors.
Story Mode, FiveM, and GTA Online
The cited NaturalVision-related implementation was described as limited to Story Mode and FiveM, not GTA Online. Treat third-party rendering injectors, modified DLLs, ReShade components, and frame-generation hooks as Story Mode/FiveM tools unless the mod author and Rockstar explicitly establish otherwise.
Never assume that a graphics mod is safe for GTA Online. Rockstar updates can replace modified files, and anti-cheat or integrity systems can treat injected components differently from ordinary visual settings. For current version information, consult Rockstar’s official title-update notes.

The game crashes on launch
Likely causes include a Legacy/Enhanced mismatch, an outdated loader, a Rockstar title update, or conflicts with ReShade, ENB, NaturalVision, QuantV, FiveM, or another injector.
Recommended Free Tools
- Remove or rename the injected DLL and loader files.
- Restore the original backed-up files.
- Verify the installation through the Rockstar, Steam, or Epic launcher.
- Launch the unmodified game once.
- Reinstall only components confirmed for the exact game version.
Keep separate modded and unmodded profiles or installations where practical.
The launcher restores the original DLSS file
A Nexus Mods DLSS Replacer for GTA V Enhanced is designed to monitor the game and swap in a preferred DLSS file, then restore the original after exit. Its listing states that it requires administrator privileges and .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later.

The HUD or minimap flickers
Disable the frame-generation mod first. Then test without ReShade, ENB, NVE, FiveM overlays, and other injectors, adding them back one at a time. Flickering can result from incorrect motion-vector handling or conflicts with UI elements.

FPS rises but the game feels less responsive
Compare native rendering, DLSS Super Resolution alone, Frame Generation alone where available, and both together. Use a frame-time overlay and pay attention to the base rendered FPS rather than only the final displayed number.
Does the old mod still make sense in 2026?
For most Enhanced players, no. The official implementation is simpler, better integrated, and supported through the current game branch. Enhanced also has official FSR 3 and later DLSS 4 features.
The 2023 approach can still be relevant to a narrower group:
- Legacy players with demanding visual mods that do not support Enhanced.
- RTX 40-series owners whose heavily modded Legacy installation is GPU-limited.
- Players willing to accept third-party loader conflicts, artifacts, latency trade-offs, and uncertain support.
- Story Mode or permitted FiveM users who can maintain a separate modded setup.
A player with low or unstable base FPS, a CPU bottleneck, sensitivity to latency, or a need for a clean GTA Online installation should avoid it. Frame Generation cannot remove the underlying CPU limit, and the old mod’s reported ability to bypass GTA V’s practical frame-rate behavior around 180 FPS was raised as a possibility in period coverage, not verified as a reliable feature.

PureDark’s November 2023 mod was a technically significant way to add DLSS 3 Frame Generation to the old PC version of GTA V. In some demanding configurations, coverage reported roughly doubled displayed frame rates, including 4K examples such as 87 to 152 FPS and 78 to 147 FPS. Those numbers were configuration-specific and do not prove that the game’s underlying rendering performance or responsiveness doubled.
Today, identify the edition first. Use Rockstar’s native DLSS features on Enhanced. Consider the third-party mod only for a compatible Legacy installation, with backups and realistic expectations about latency, artifacts, online safety, and ongoing compatibility.
