A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11guitrn_a.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows XP-era DLL, not a modern Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that guitrn_a.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, identify the program requesting it before replacing anything.
The file was historically associated with the Windows XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and User State Migration Tool. Old inventories place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32USMTguitrn_a.dll
That does not mean current Windows requires it. On a modern PC, the message usually points to an old migration component, an obsolete application, a stale startup entry, or a damaged installation.
Quick identification
| Item | What is known |
|---|---|
| File | guitrn_a.dll |
| Historical role | “Transports for GUI” component used by Windows XP migration tools |
| Historical location | C:WindowsSystem32USMT |
| Architecture | Historical records identify it as a 32-bit XP-era file |
| Current Windows 10/11 requirement | No evidence shows that Windows 10 or Windows 11 normally requires it |
| Safe replacement | Repair the calling Windows component or application |
| Standalone Microsoft download | No current official standalone download was verified |
Microsoft’s current USMT overview describes USMT as a migration tool for user accounts, files, settings, and application settings. Current USMT is distributed through the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit, not as an individual guitrn_a.dll download.

First, find the program that requested guitrn_a.dll
Do not begin by copying a DLL into System32. The filename in the error is not always the actual cause, and “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of the named DLL is missing.
Check when the error appears
Note whether the message appears:
- When Windows starts or you sign in
- When opening a particular program or game
- After an antivirus cleanup
- After disk cleanup or a failed Windows repair
- After uninstalling software
- During a migration or backup operation
If the message appears only when launching one application, that application is the first repair target. If it appears at sign-in, look for a stale startup item, scheduled task, or incomplete uninstall.
Use Task Manager and startup entries
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry with a name you do not recognize or one related to recently removed software.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location if available.
- Record the executable name and complete path.
- Do not delete the entry yet. Disable it temporarily, restart, and check whether the error returns.
For a scheduled task:
- Press Windows key, type Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose Actions point to a missing program or an old migration utility.
- Open a task’s Properties and record its action before disabling it.
- Restart and test.
The executable name matters. An old migwiz.exe or another Windows migration executable points toward the XP component. A third-party executable points toward that program’s own installation or compatibility problem.
Fix 1: Repair the application that calls the DLL
If a particular program produces the error, repair or reinstall that program before touching Windows system folders.
Use Windows app repair
For a Microsoft Store or supported desktop application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the ** three-dot menu**.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset if available. Resetting can remove application data, so use it only after confirming that important settings are backed up.
Repair a traditional desktop application
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program.
- Select its menu and choose Modify, Repair, or Change, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the vendor’s repair wizard.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s original installer or official account. For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files command first.
Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will provide guitrn_a.dll. This file is not identified as belonging to those redistributables.

Check compatibility and architecture
Historical evidence supports a 32-bit XP DLL. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility support, but inserting a random 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit application folder will not make the application compatible.
To check the application’s location:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and choose Open File Location.
- Record the executable path.
- Check the program’s official documentation for Windows 10 or Windows 11 support.
If a modern, unfamiliar application asks for an obsolete XP migration DLL, treat that as suspicious. Remove or reinstall the application from its official source rather than supplying the DLL manually.
Fix 2: Repair Windows system files on Windows 10 or 11
This is appropriate when the error appears during Windows operation, after system damage, or when the suspected caller is an old Windows migration component. It is less likely to restore an XP-only file on a current installation, but it can repair damaged protected Windows components and dependencies.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run the next command separately:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repeat the action that produced the error.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected system files. Microsoft documents this Windows image repair procedure and the DISM-then-SFC repair sequence.
Success means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired damaged files, and the original program starts normally. If SFC reports that it could not fix some files, restart and run the commands again. If the error remains, return to identifying the calling executable rather than copying in a DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of system problems instead of making you hunt through repair results manually; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that actually owns the error.
Important: do not use modern DISM syntax on Windows XP
Windows XP requires its own repair process. If the affected computer really is running XP and the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is the caller, use matching XP installation media or the applicable service-pack files, then run the XP-compatible System File Checker process documented by Microsoft in System File Checker.
Do not use a Windows 11 repair command as an XP repair method. Do not mix files from different XP service-pack levels.

- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
Restore a quarantined copy only if it was located in the historical XP USMT directory, matches trusted installation media, and the system is clean. If malware may have modified or replaced it, do not restore the file. Repair or reinstall Windows and the affected application instead.
A file named guitrn_a.dll is not automatically authentic merely because the name is associated with Microsoft. Check its path, digital signature when available, and the program that loaded it.
Fix 4: Use System Restore when the disappearance is recent
System Restore can help if the error began after a driver, cleanup operation, application installation, or system change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
- Restart and test.
System Restore is not a malware-removal method and does not replace repairing a compromised application. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with application repair and system-file checks.
Fix 5: Check drivers only when the caller identifies a device component
guitrn_a.dll is not a graphics driver or a general hardware runtime. Updating drivers will not normally restore this file. Use Device Manager only if the error began with a device utility or Windows reports a separate driver problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- Use Update driver, or download the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart and test.
Avoid replacing a working driver just because guitrn_a.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking several device manufacturers, but its driver installation requires the full version and it will not replace the original program that requested guitrn_a.dll.

Windows Features does not provide a verified guitrn_a.dll package. It is useful only for confirming whether an optional legacy component is already installed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Press Windows key.
- Type Windows Features.
- Open Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the listed components.
- Do not enable legacy features merely because their names sound related.
- Select Cancel unless you have identified a specific application requirement.
Installing the current Windows ADK solely to obtain this DLL is also inappropriate. Microsoft’s ADK installation documentation describes current deployment tools, but it does not verify that the XP-era guitrn_a.dll is included.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
Unofficial DLL repositories can provide the wrong XP build, wrong architecture, corrupted files, or tampered binaries. A replacement may also fail because the real problem is a missing dependency, an incorrect search path, or a broken application installation.

- Bootable Password Recovery Reset CD Compatible With Windows Versions,11,10, 8.1, 7, XP and Vista in 32/64 Bit. No Internet Connection Required. Reset Lost Password
There is no verified current standalone Microsoft download for guitrn_a.dll. Use matching Windows installation media, the original application installer, or Microsoft’s documented repair procedures instead.
Do not copy it into System32
System32 is not a universal DLL drop location. Copying an old 32-bit file there can create version conflicts and expose every process that searches that folder to an untrusted binary.

Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration routines such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL installation command. Microsoft explains its purpose and syntax in the Regsvr32 documentation.
If running it produces “DllRegisterServer was not found,” that usually means registration does not apply. It does not prove that guitrn_a.dll is defective.
If the error says “not designed to run on Windows”
That message commonly indicates corruption, an incompatible architecture, a damaged dependency, or a file that is not a valid Windows binary.
- Do not replace the file from a download site.
- Identify the executable that loaded it.
- Check whether the program is 32-bit and whether it supports Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Repair or reinstall that program.
- Run DISM and SFC if Windows components may be damaged.
- Check antivirus history and the file’s original path.
- If the error remains, capture the full dialog, executable path, Windows version, and Event Viewer entry.
FAQ
Does Windows 11 need guitrn_a.dll?
Generally, no. The file is associated with Windows XP migration tooling. A Windows 11 error naming it usually indicates old software, a stale reference, or an untrusted application.
Is guitrn_a.dll malware?
The genuine historical file is associated with Microsoft’s XP migration tools, but any file with that name can be counterfeit. Location, signature, caller, and installation source matter.
Can I replace it with a 64-bit DLL?
No verified native 64-bit build is established by the historical records. Do not mix architectures or place an arbitrary file in an application or system directory.
Why does “the specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing file, or Windows may be searching the wrong location. Identify the caller and repair the complete application rather than replacing only the named file.
What is the definitive fix?
If migwiz.exe or the XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard is the caller, repair Windows XP from matching media or use XP-compatible SFC. If a third-party program is the caller, repair or reinstall that program from its original source.
